I'm Home

Fred never wanted to be in love. But here he was, falling head over heels for his brother's best friend. ((I only own the plot. Characters belong to J.K. 8. I've Tried My Best

I tried my best to never let you in to see the truth
And I've never opened up
I've never truly loved 'till you put your arms around me
And I believe that it's easier for you to let me go

The Room of Requirement was filled with buzz at the return of the Boy Who Lived and his two friends, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger. Plans to fight were tossed here and there, greetings were made, and the golden coins were pulled out of several pockets to contact the alumni members of Dumbledore's Army, and the others that were hidden in other parts of the castle. Hermione waited anxiously for one man in particular, avoiding Ron's attempts at distraction and distancing herself from everyone.

"Looking for someone?" Fred said with a grin, tapping his lover on the shoulder. Hermione gave a little squeak and whirled around, a smile of her own gracing her lips as she saw ginger boyfriend. The pressure of her current task seemed to flee from her shoulders at the sight of his cocky smile. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his nose in reply to his question, still smiling. Hermione's smile faded when she saw the tired, almost depressed look on Fred's face.

"Hermione, I... You need to let me go," Fred said soberly, his voice wavering. Hermione pulled away, her hands returning to her sides. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. After everything they'd gone through together, everything that had happened between them, Fred was ending it? Hermione felt anger boil in her blood, but not towards Fred; towards herself. This was her fault, wasn't it? She must have screwed up somewhere, said something or done something wrong that made Fred hate her.

"Hey, I'm sorry... Don't cry," Fred whispered,  his brow furrowing as he reached out to touch Hermione's cheek. Hermione quickly hid her face behind her brown locks, wiping her eyes quickly before glaring up at Fred, not noticing the pain hidden in his eyes.

"Please, just hear me out. I still love you, and truest me, this is hard, but I know I'm going to die." Hermione recoiled in shock, her eyes widening slightly at Fred's words. "You're the only person I've ever really loved. I tried to... to hide who I really was, because I knew you would think I was weak and you would leave me after getting sick and tired of fixing me. But that day when you found me on the roof changed that, and I'll always be grateful to you," Fred said slowly, taking both of Hermione's hands in his and looking her in the eye as she spoke. She was still in shock, but she managed to nod shakily.

"I love you so much, and I don't want to have to say this. But I have a gut feeling that I'm not going to make it, and just in case I don't, I want you to know that I love you, and I don't want you to tie yourself down and never let yourself love anyone else." Fred held Hermione close to his chest, resting his chin atop her head and gazing ahead sadly. Hermione felt tears gathering in her eyes and tried to fight them back, not daring to look up at Fred.

"This is goodbye, my love. Please, be happy." And with that, Fred kissed Hermione gently and pulled away, giving her one last sad smile before disappearing off into the fray.
