I'm Home

Fred never wanted to be in love. But here he was, falling head over heels for his brother's best friend. ((I only own the plot. Characters belong to J.K. 5. I Hope That You See

I hope that you see right through my walls
I hope that you catch me, 'cause I'm already falling
I'll never let a love get so close
You put your arms around me and I'm home

Hermione studied Fred with a suspicious gaze. He was with George and Lee, laughing and joking like he normally did, but something seemed off. His smile wasn't as wide, he didn't tell his jokes with as much enthusiasm, and his laughs were always short-lived and quiet. Hermione even thought she saw Fred blink back tears a few times. When Lee and George left to go to the library, probably to sneak into the restricted section, Fred declined their invitation to go and started to slowly make his way to the Astronomy tower, his hands shoved deeply into his pockets and his head hung low.Hermione followed him, keeping an eye on his to make sure he didn't do anything stupid. Fred climbed the stairs of the Astronomy tower, and Hermione could see that he was shaking.

Fred stood at the railing at the edge of the astronomy tower, his gaze cast downward. Hermione watched as he clenched his fists and started to shake harder. His breathing was ragged and Hermione could tell he was crying from the occasional hiccup and sob he let out.

"Come on, stop being a chicken," Fred whispered to himself, and Hermione's eyes widened in horror as he started to climb the railing, shaking from imbalance and grief. "No!" Hermione screamed, running forward and grabbing Fred's wrist. Startled, Fred almost lost his balance and tumbled over the edge, but he quickly composed himself and snatched his hand away. Hermione gasped as Fred seemed to lean forward slightly, but she realized that he just brought his chin to his chest, tears slowly falling down and tumbling hundreds of feet below them.

"Fred, come down," Hermione said. She was taken aback as she heard her voice, sounding so broken and desperate. Fred slowly shook his head, turning it to face her with a bitter smile on his face. "I can't do this anymore, Hermione. I'm not good enough; I never have been. My brothers...even George... T-They hate me. Everyone hates me," Fred said, the tears falling faster and his voice breaking.

"Mum said if I don't get my grades up and keep getting into trouble she'll disown me. I know she's not kidding, she never jokes about stuff like that. I-I... I don't want to disappoint her anymore. I don't want to disappoint anyone anymore. It's not like my life is worth anything. I'm just the stupid, worthless wizard that no one cares about." Fred flinched and sighed. "Besides, when I'm gone, people will notice George more. He won't be in my shadow." Hermione shook her head, her eyes swimming with tears.

"But they'd all miss you. I'd miss you," she murmured. Fred laughed bitterly. "No you wouldn't. You'll move on when I'm dead. Thanks though, for everything. It's been fun." Fred spread his arms and closed his eyes, looking like a bird about to take flight, and started to fall forward. His mind was blank as he felt gravity begin to take over, but his eyes snapped open when he heard Hermione, the love of his live, scream in absolute terror. His face paled and he felt sick to his stomach when he saw how high he was. He let out a scream of his own and tried to twist around and jump off the railing, but his momentum was already too strong. He grabbed the railing as he fell, dangling over the edge.

Hermione rushed forward and grabbed his hand, pulling him up as hard as she could. Fred grabbed the railing with his other hand, pulling himself up and falling on the cold floor of the Astronomy tower. He shakily got to his knees, his eyes clenched shut and his teeth gritted. Tears managed to leak their way through his sealed lids and he buried his head in his hands to hide them.

"Fred," Hermione said softly, tears of her own beginning to fall as she knelt beside her lover and pulled him into a tight embrace. "None of that's true. Your family loves you so much. And if the other students hate you that's their own fault, not yours. You haven't done anything wrong." Fred wanted to scream at her that she was wrong, that he was hated by everyone and that his family would be better off if he was dead, but he couldn't get the words out. Fred's hands fell limp at his sides and he rested his head on Hermione's shoulder, sobbing. She hugged him tighter, saying nothing, and just let him cry.
