Me and My Mental Health Story

Hi... I'm Chloe, I'm 18 years old and I'm from the UK

I used to love playing football and multiple sports. I say used too... When I was 13 or 14, everything changed for me, but life went on as normal. Well from the outside it would have seemed normal, but for me, it was far from it.

Mental Health is something that is extremely stigmatised in the UK and across the world. This is my ongoing battle with mental health and what my experience of being in the UK mental health system is like. Everyone's experiences are different... but here's my story.

1. How It All Started

I had a good childhood, lovely parents and family, what more could I want...

However, when I was 13 or 14, my mood started to drop. Everyone saw this as part of the normal teenage puberty cycle - big mood swings and more argumentative, so I didn't think anything of it. My mood was constantly low. Everyone just told me to 'cheer up' so after a couple of weeks I just started to act happy around everyone. No one knew it was so much more than just being moody. My head was in constant turmoil; having a lack of energy and motivation to do anything; my apatite all over the place; being unable to sleep. It was hard. No one understood - and I was unable to explain it myself, so I didn't. I carried on without telling anyone all the way through school. No one knew what I was going through. I didn't know much about mental health and mental illness at this time, it's one of those things we were never taught properly about. I never thought that I could be mentally ill, it never crossed my mind.
