This was my Nano write that I, unfortunately, was late to sign up for due to technical difficulties.

20. Motherly Love

The shadow vanished and Oliver was sitting in front of the empty chair alone. Tanith stood in the doorway and watched him for a while before she spoke. “Are you alright?” He wiped his face off then stood up and wheeled around to look at her.

“Are you always this nosey? Or is it just cause you’re stalking me?” He teased and she pursed her lips and stomped back to Talon who was sitting on the couch hugging his knees for warmth. Oliver walked to the closet in the hallway and pulled out some blankets then walked to the living room, handing one to each of them. “I don’t know what we are going to do about food. There is none in this world that is healthy to eat so I’m gonna have to figure out how to work the portal.” Oliver went upstairs to grab some pillows and saw his journal still sitting on the table. He grabbed that also and went back downstairs. Talon and Tanith were on opposite sides of the couch with their legs curled up next to them and watched Oliver walk in. Oliver walked over and sat in the big chair, kicking out the footrest and pulling the blanket over him. He pulled out the little watch and opened the back to see the buttons inside.

One by one they fell asleep, Oliver could hardly keep his eyes open as he took notes on each button and noted the time. He finally drifted off to sleep and didn’t wake up till the afternoon the next day. In the middle of his dream a loud and terrible sound that sounded like an animal gasping for air woke him. It was a little brighter when he opened his eyes and he looked over to see Talon’s chest heaving and his eyes wide, holding his hands to his chest. Tanith was just waking up as Oliver ran over beside Talon and rubbed his back.

“Oh my god what’s wrong with him?” Tanith and Oliver sat freaking out as he gasped for air, holding his chest in pain.

“It’s his asthma! It must have come back! I don’t know what to do!” Fear choked seemed to choke Oliver as he watched his friend suffer in pain. “Oh god! Talon just breathe. Calm down okay?”

Oliver ran to the kitchen to look for anything and Tanith watched in horror as Talon gasped harder for air. His eyes closing from how terrible it felt. Talon began to pass out and give up on trying to breathe, the burning sensation taking over his throat and lungs till he couldn’t take it anymore. Then he felt something warm and soft touch the right side of his cheek and pull him to lean more to his left. His head was resting against something also warm and comfortable, a woman’s chest? He could hear her heart beating and pictured Tanith holding him to her to comfort him. Then a woman’s voice spoke up and spoke his name, “Talon? I need you to calm down. Focus on my voice and listen to my breath. Do what I do and just keep breathing. Slowly breathe…” Her voice was soft and soothing and it was like she was singing to him.

The pain in his chest and throat slowly went away and he was breathing normally. He felt her hand run through his wavy blonde hair and cool his forehead which burned. He was so comfortable he fell back asleep. The woman’s hand continued to run through his hair and her eyes were closed as she hummed.

Oliver stood by the door, his eyes wide and jaw dropped as his friend was leaning on the demon woman who was petting his head. Tanith was leaning back against the couch and also staring in surprise at the woman and Talon. Oliver closed his mouth and with shaky legs took a step towards her. “Let him go!”

“Oliver! Shut up! She’s helping him.” Tanith stood to her defense and the humming continued.

“You don’t know that! She’s a demon! She could be stealing his soul right now and we wouldn’t know it!”

“I’m not a demon Oli.” Her voice was calm and cool. Oliver looked back at her, her face was to him and her face and eyes were black as night. Her hair waved around her face and gently swayed.

“What are you then and why are you helping us?”

“You wouldn’t understand.” She spoke softly, “Now lower your tone or else you’ll wake him up.” She sounded so motherly and sweet he shut up but walked over and sat on the chair again, watching her closely.

“I’m sure I could figure it out if you’d tell me.” Oliver said.

Her eyes stared unblinkingly down at the boy she held. “I’m a mother and I’m here to help my son.”

“You’re Talon’s mother? How is that possible?”

“Not Talon’s, hun.” Her words caused him to choke up. Tanith sat on the opposite side of the couch from her and watched her friend sleep. Oliver’s palms were sweating as he wiped them on his pants, not sure what he should say. “I know you can’t understand this now and you shouldn’t worry about it until-”

“You aren’t my mom! My mom abandoned me, along with my dad.” Her glance shot in his direction.

“Don’t you dare say we abandoned you. It was for your own protection and it saved your life.” She snapped at him and he turned away from her. She took a deep breath to calm herself down. “As I was saying; you wouldn’t understand so I wouldn’t worry about it.” Everyone was quiet for a while until Talon began to stir. She let go of him then gently set him down before standing up. “There are apples sitting in the kitchen sink, they’re safe to eat so I would eat as much as possible before you leave.”

“Leave? We can’t. We don’t know how to work the portal.” Oliver looked up at her as she sort of walked by, her thin figure looked no more than a stick.

“Not home unfortunately… Since you ignored my warning you’re stuck here until we figure out a way to send you back.”

“It’s not my fault.”

“That doesn’t matter. You should have known better.”

“What happened to Sylvia?” He stood up and walked after her into the kitchen.

“That’s none of your business.”

“The hell it is!” She turned on him, her dark eyes staring deep into his and her voice sounded deeper.

“I said it’s none of your business.” She stared at him for a long time, seeing the fear in his eyes she backed up and cleared her throat. “Don’t worry about her. Now eat and then you have to go to the next state over to see a friend who knows how to get you home.”

“We can’t just walk there.” She took in a deep breath to keep herself calm.

“You’re being stubborn Oliver. There’s a car parked outside with food packed and a map with everything on it.” With that she was gone and he was alone. Tanith hurried in a second later to see him standing alone.

“He’s awake.”

“Good. Now come eat something then we have to go.” He turned and walked back to the living room.

“Where are we going?”
