23. Change Of Plans

The next morning they all gathered in the small room next to the exit, tears filled Tanith’s eyes again as she ran to her father and hugged him; not wanting to let go. “I don’t want to leave without you.” She whispered.

“I know princess.” He brushed his fingers through her hair. Oliver watched, pained by the thought of this being the last time she’d see her father. What about him? What about Oliver and his mother? He turns to her, taking in her scent and her face although it wasn’t very pleasant, it somehow comforted him.

“I don’t really know what to say…” He mumbled and scratched the back of his head. After all this time of wanting to see her, imagining how he’d find her and what he’d say, he had nothing. Not one thing came to mind besides questions on where they went, where was his father? But he could only guess they were both dead.

“It’s fine. I understand how you feel… I’m sorry that I-”

“Don’t apologize. I understand why you did it so it doesn’t matter anymore.” He managed a smile and caught a hint of one in return. Tanith and her father pulled away, she wiped away the rest of the tears and went to help Talon to his feet which caused him to cough. Oliver cleared his throat before nudging toward his mother and opened his arms, she did the same and they hugged each other tightly. There was a loud “Zap” sound and the house began to shake. Talon and Tanith stumbled to the floor and Oliver held his mother which kept him steady.

Colton quickly bent over to help them up; as he bent, an Ashtalon manifests himself and runs it’s long forearm up in his chest, pinning him in the air. Colton was frozen and Tanith watched in horror as Colton evaporated in front of her eyes. Time felt like it stood still as her deafening scream drowned out the ringing in Oliver’s ears. The watch that was in Colton’s hand dropped in slow motion. Talon reached to grab it but missed and it hit the ground and the back popped open. Time sped up to itself and everything happened in a second. The Ashtalon was in front of Oliver and it threw him across the room into the other room and his head hit the wooden counter before he landed on the ground. Jennifer was in front of the Ashtalon and it grabbed her  by her neck. The watch flew in the air and a bright light spewed across the room and Talon and Tanith were gone and so was the device; but Oliver remained on the floor.

Talon and Tanith held each other's hand tightly. The light exploded around them and they felt as light as a feather until they hit the ground again. Talon opened one eye to look around the room, they were in Sylvia's house again. The sun lit up the messy living room from the open window. “We're home.” They pulled away from each other and looked around.

“Where's… Oliver?” Tanith asked her voice shaking and tear stains over her cheeks that had cleaned the dirt. She then quickly got up. Talon shook his head then saw the watch glinting in the sunlight next to him. He picked it up then stood up slowly starting to cough. Tanith assisted him then led him to the door. “We have to get out of here.”

“We can't just leave without Oliver!” Talon argued and looked around, wanting him to just pop up somewhere.

Tanith grabbed his arm, “We can't do anything anyways. We have the wrong watch. See? It’s back isn't the same as the other one and the ticking is quicker and more clear.” She began to tug him to the door.

“How do you know so much about it?”

“Because I watched my father work on both of them.” Tears filled her eyes again and she let a few fall out before rubbing them away. “We need to reassure Oliver's family members that he's okay.”

Talon let her pull him outside and the sun poured onto them like a shower. Their eyes squinted, trying to adjust to the light. Talon looked back once more, expecting Oliver to run out from the kitchen. “Where is he?”
