35. 8 Years Later

She is unmistakeable. Her eyes were like the ocean on a starry night and her hair was as beautiful as it was when he first laid eyes upon her. His heart seemed to have thumped harder in his chest each time he saw her smile, her smile could cure an elderly person whose heart is as cold as ice. He could hardly breathe when she looked at him… “are you okay?” His mother asked him, chuckling softly. He couldn’t hold back his massive grin as he ran to her, throwing his arms around her waist.

The last time he had seen her was the day he had destroyed the portal and left his mother and father to rest in peace. He hadn’t dreamt about them for a long time but he thought about his family every day. His grandma had passed away a few years back and now he was 29 with two kids of his own and a wife.

“I missed you so much!” He could feel tears filling up under his eyelids while his face was buried against her stomach. He knew this was just a dream, he didn’t care. He could almost feel the warmth of her body as he  squeezed her as tightly as he could. Her laughter was so pure and amazing; like the sound of a bird’s whistle on a spring morning and a wolf’s howl on a full moon. So beautiful. So perfect.

“I missed you too my love.” He could feel her hands running through his short black hair, he was a child again. Her little boy. He managed to pull his face away and look up at her, “I love you so much.” She smiled down at him while she spoke. He could listen to her forever if he could. “I can’t wait to see you again, mom. I love you so much.”

She stroked his head again before replying softly. “Don’t rush. I’ll always be here waiting for you…” Oliver could hear footsteps from behind him and he looked back over a field of flowers to see his grandparents on a little bench under a tree and his father walking towards him. A smile was spread over his face. A human smile. He let go of his mother and ran for his father who picked him up and held him tightly to his chest. He was too happy to cry and he kissed his father’s cheek.

“I miss you guys so much! Tell me when I’ll see you again?” His father’s eyes were tearing up as he looked at his little boy. Tim laughed a little and kissed Oliver’s head.

“Not for a long time kid.” He carefully set him down, “Grandpa and grandma are waiting for you.” With a child’s smile he ran to his grandparents on the swing. They laughed and smiled as they picked him up between them and hugged him tightly. Oliver giggled as he began to tell them of his new family and how much he missed them all.

“You’re a man now Oli.” Britney ruffled his hair happily and looked up at Jennifer and Tim who walked hand in hand to the swing to join them.

“I’m so proud of you.” Kingston said and kissed Oliver’s head. “Stay out of trouble and take care of your family. You know family is everything.”

“I know.” His voice was deep like a mans and he looked down at his hands to see them in their usual size. The boy in him was gone and he could feel himself starting to cry.

“We are always here for you Oli.” They all gave him a group hug and kissed him on his head. “We love you...”

He woke up with sudden urgency, sitting upright in his bed with wide eyes. The moon light creeping in between the curtains onto his feet feet. Tears were falling from his eyes and he quickly wiped them away, wanting to wail for her to come back and comfort him. The bed moved and Tanith slowly turned around towards him, wrapping her arm around him while she mumbled. “Are you alright, babe?”

He smiled a little and sighed softly, “Only a dream…”

In the window across the room something stood, a dark shape of a woman looking in at the man in front of her. A smile grew across her face before she disintegrated into a sheet of black smoke that soon faded into the light breeze. Thunder struck again and he glanced out the window to see nothing but the street light and the clouds above the rest of the houses. He quickly walked over and shut the blinds and closed the curtains then crawled over and laid back down beside his wife to sleep once more.
