They cleaned him with iodine and then pumped his stomach to remove the alcohol then he was put on a saline drip. He was also given a blood transfusion.

His wife was called who came with her sons and oldest daughters.’

For over twelve hours the surgeon was in theatre. Both arms were in plaster to the elbow but they had removed both legs.

They sat around his bed as he lay unconscious for another five hours. When he awoke he screamed out in agony.’

“Hello Albert, how are you feeling said Mr Wallace?’

“I cannot feel my legs he screamed what have you done to me.’

“Sorry old chap but we had to take those I’m afraid; they were too far gone to repair.’

“I’ve got no legs; Jesus Christ how the hell am I going to walk?

Albert looked at the surgeon in disbelief then he saw the cage er his bed and looked down to where his legs should have been.

“What about my hands, I mean I can get false legs can’t I?’

“Yes, we hope that your hands will heal but like your legs they were smashed in several places. It is going to be a tough old road for you my friend and the healing process is going to take a long time you are going to need further surgery I’m afraid.’

“How long?’

“Well, that really depends entirely on you old man.’

“It could be months or could take several years; I’m making no promises here.’

“So am I going to return to work?’

“In a wheelchair maybe but as for working with your hands we don’t know.’

“The police are waiting to speak with you so I will have to get on; I have to try and grab an hour of sleep. You’ve kept me awake all night.’

“I’m sorry Doc.’

“It’s Mr Wallace; I’m a surgeon not a doctor.’

The surgeon left the ward then shortly after, police Sergeant Nick Abraham’s walked in with another constable.

“Hello Mr Mortimer, could we ask you a few questions?’

This is Constable Donald Carr and I am.’

“I know who you are Sergeant.’

“I see.’

“You went under the name of “Nick, Nick Abraham when I was a kid.’

“I still do Mr Mortimer you could say it’s my nick name.’

“Funny ha-ha replied Mortimer who did not like the police at all.’

They were never away from his father’s house when he was growing up as his father was a bit of a fence for other thieves. He used to sell stolen goods on to people for a tidy sum then give what ever he thought reasonable on to the thieves.

If anyone to sell goods on his father’s patch they were swiftly dealt with.

“So can you tell us who attacked you Mr Mortimer?’

“How the hell would I know apart from there was two of them; big bastards as well they were.’

“Can you describe them?’

“I was out cold; how do you expect me to remember.’

Mrs Oliver who rang us said she saw everything from her window.

“Could you tell us why you were masturbating in a public place sir?’

“I.. I wasn’t doing no such thing; I was relieving myself in the lane after I got caught short coming home from the club.’

“Well Mrs Oliver said that she distinctly saw you even down to the size of your member sir.’
