He threatened to sack her on the spot if she didn’t obey his orders.’

“What did he ask you to do?’

“Mostly I had to give him a wank, and then he asked me to give him you know what with my mouth.’

“The filthy bastard snarled Christine.’

“What’s worse is I got pregnant and I had to see Mrs Judd along Lawson Street. She apparently takes care of the young lasses in the Jungle Bar who get themselves knocked up.’ “I had to pay her ten pounds to get rid of the child that I was carrying because if my man had found out he would have killed me.’ There was no way out because Len couldn’t have kids and he would have known it wasn’t his.’

“I had to borrow the money off my aunt Polly; I’ve being paying her back each week.

That’s how I’ve had no money to go out or buy new clothes with.’

“I see, why didn’t you come to me Nelly?’

“I was too frightened Christine, I was threatened by Mortimer that if I told anyone he would get his friends to slit my throat.’

“We are going to deal with that slimy bastard once and for all Nelly.’

“What are you going to do Christine?’

“Never you mind Nelly, but I promise you this; he will never rape another girl.’

They reached the top of the stairs and then walked down the street. When they came to the end Christine gave Nelly a hug and told her not to worry then crossed over to her house.

Tom Farrow came home from his fishing trip Margaret was in the kitchen preparing a corned beef and onion pie whilst Kerstin and Beth were peeling vegetables.’

“Dinner won’t be long Tom; we had to go shopping as you had very little in.’ “I promise we will have it on the table for you tomorrow.’

“Don’t worry yourselves; I can wait you know; I mean you don’t finish until five o’clock.’

“I’ve got some bacon bones and some lap, I’m going to make a pan of soup for tomorrows dinner so we will just have to heat it up when we come in.’

“Sounds nice, you are going to spoil me.’

“I will wash up after you’ve finished; I’m going to go down to the laundry is there anything that you need done.’

“No you won’t; leave it out and it will be washed for you.’

“Look just because I asked you to come and stay here doesn’t mean that I can take advantage of you all.’

“It’s the least we can do Tom.’

Okay but let me return your kindness; do you want to go to club with me tonight.’

“What’s on there?’

“Not a lot really but you can get a drink if you wish.’

“Is Chris and Steve going?’

“I expect so didn’t they say last night?’

“No, but they said they might came around.’

“Look if you want to be alone, Margaret and I will go on our own.’

“We will see when the lads come.’

Margaret put the pie into the oven and then placed potatoes and the other vegetables on the range. Then took Tom’s washing and filled a bucket with hot water and some soap flakes to wash out his shirts and smalls. She went out into the yard and took the scrubbing board and set about washing his shirts she knew how to use the mangle although she called it a wringer.
