5. The Morning After

I feel someone shove my shoulders hard like somebody had pin me to the ground and then started to shake me. My eyes pop open as I wonder what is going on. "Huh?" I mumble to myself. "What's going on?"

I look around the room seeing a petite girl hovering over me. She has almond shape eyes and the lightest shade of blue you could ever seen. Her skin was fair and she has a few freckles underneath her eyes, some even on the tips of her nose. She has dirty blonde hair that is tied up into a messy ponytail. A few strands of hair swoop as it sneaks its way pass the hair tie.

"I think you had a nightmare" She states looking at me as if she is trying to study me. "Are you okay?" I nod my head and put my hand on top of it. An intense pain creeps its way as if I tried walking through a wall and failed.

"I guess so..." I trail off focusing more on my pain, then the girl in front of me. I can hear her mumble a few words about a goodnights sleep, but she passed it off when she held out her hand. I look up at her then look back down at her hands. Is she wanting me to shake her hand? I wonder... I take out my hand shaking hers lightly.

"Come on, shake on it like a business deal." I shake her hand harder this time leaving her with a pleasurable handshake. At least I hope I did. "There you go, that's better". I smile faintly and notice that the other girls in the room are still fast asleep and that some were even snoring away as if nothing happened. Well at least that's what it seems to me.

As the girls small hand was still in my hand, she begins talking. "Hi, I'm Mackenzie". "Hello I'm Eliza" I reply back. "I know who you are and I have to say I'm really interested in you." I give her a puzzle look. Does she not like guys? And even if she didn't why would she be interested in me? I don't even have breasts! "I'm honestly surprised that you were placed in Hufflepuff, because from what I heard from my brother, is that your family is a long line of Slytherin."

Not knowing what to do or say, I slightly smile at her while titling my head a bit.

"Oh I'm weirding you out, aren't I? I'm sorry. I'm just really curious about you and want to get to know you better. I know I sound crazy right now, but I think we can sorta relate to each other." She says while rambling on again. I rise my eyebrow and she continues to speak. "See, part of my family is in Slytherin, while the other parts are all over."

I can tell she means well and she does seem really friendly. It also wouldn't hurt to have a female friend that is in my common house. So with that I reach out my hand and asked if she wanted to start over. She nods gracefully and with that we reintroduce ourselves.

Soon after we began laughing our heads off as we were learning about each other. Mackenzie is the youngest out of four and her older brother, Justin, is in class 3 while her other older siblings have already graduated Hogwarts. I also learned that her favorite color is blue and that she is fascinated by muggles.
We stayed up all night talking and browsing through our books that were part of our school supplies when I asked her if she was hungry. By this time my stomach was having a marching band march though and the crowd is rumbling on. "Yes, I'm starving!" She blurts out as she places her hands on her stomach acting like she hasn't been fed in weeks.

"I wonder if its time that we can go down to the Great Hall?" I ask wondering as I get up from my bed. "I sure hope it is." Mackenzie says concern. "Well lets get ready and then we'll go down there and find out." I stated and she nodded as she went over towards her bed to get ready.
I get out my robes from my trunk and start to change out of my pajamas. Then I start to brush out my hair getting the small nots of hair that had form from last night. After that was finished, I went to the bathroom and brushed my teeth feeling refreshed afterwards. As I made it back to the room Mackenzie was ready to go with her books in her hands. I smiled as I went over and grabbed mine. "Ready?" She asked. "Ready." I nod as we started to walk down the spiral staircase but tip toeing for many of those were still sleeping.

I hear hash voices whispering in the living area and I could hear the fire pop and swizzle as we made each step closer. Sitting there on the couch, I see Ryan and another person talking and look up as they saw us come down the stairs.

"Eliza" Ryan spoke "who is your friend?" I turn my direction towards Mackenzie and before I could answer she replied with "Mackenzie". He sighs and rolls his eyes. 'Why do you ask such silly questions when you already know the answers to." She says with much attitude. I quickly stare at the two of them as they begin to argue about something that I was unsure about. Then when that was over all they could do was name call. "Know-it-all" "Jerk" "Bitch" "Assbutt"!

I've never in all my life heard such colorful language before. The only exception is when I watched a television show and I'm not even sure if I was dreaming it or not. By now I'm not evening sure whats going on. All I know is that I have to take it road by road. Although their language, It surprises me that they would go to deep lengths to call each other mean names like that. But then again, who am I to judge?

They continue for some time now when people with tired eyes started coming in the room. Great . I thought. Now there's a crowd.

"Mackenzie" I spat. Her eyes dart at me as she says "what." "Let's get going. Its time for breakfast and I don't want to miss it because we don't have time to eat since class will be starting." This seemed to calm her down. "Food does sound good right now." I nod my head. "See, now lets get going before we're late."

She starts walking towards the door in which I immediately start to follow her. Ryan waves bye at me which I return back at him as I make it out the door with Mackenzie. "Sorry about what happened in there. I didn't realize we were gathering a crowd." She says apologizing to me. "It's fine, but what made you two do that?" I ask remembering about curiosity killing the cat. "Reasons" she stated flat out her voice sounding cold and mean.

I am surprise at the sound of her voice because hours ago she was upbeat and happy and having no care in the world. Somehow Ryan put her in a bad mood, but I sure hope that our friendship and still be intact.

As we began walking down the hallways, we came across a couple stair cases. One of the stairs gently moved as the other ones just stayed where they are at.
"Did you know that there are a hundred and forty-two staircases here at Hogwarts?" Mackenzie half asked me. I shake my head laughing at the fact that she just blurted out the answer within her own question. "Well I do now." I say as we continue waking down the hallway.

I can feel a slight breeze behind me. 'Oh no.' I thought. "not him." As I look behind me I saw nothing, but the breeze went around me. I knew for certain that Peeve was behind us. I heard plenty of stories about him from many students last night.
Peeve is a poltergeist who loves to play tricks on people.

One time I heard he walked up to this kid who was late for class and dropped a waste paper basket on top of his head. Another time a kid was late for class and asked him for directions. Apparently he pointed her to a trick staircase leading her to the other side of the school where see needed to be. And those aren't even half the stories.

The breeze slide up towards my nose, and then it went away as you hear Peeve say " GOT YOUR CONK!" and laugh away. Mackenzie laughs and thanks that it was not her. Although I can feel the heat coming off of my cheeks and I bet you the shade was a pink.

When we finally got to the Great Hall, I ran to our tabling grabbing one of the plates and piling food on it. Once I sat down, I began to eat. In the corner of the right eye, I can see a patch of blonde hair coming towards my direction. My stomach twisted as I did not want to deal with this right now. "Malfoy" I say as he approaches out table. "Griswold" he says right back. "I thought your parents taught you better manners." I silently laugh in my head as I swallow my food and stare up at him. "My parents haven't anything. Their to busy with work. Anyways, what's so wrong with my friends?" He sighs as his long face stares back at me. "Their not our kind." he says simply. "Well at least their nice." I defend my friends. "And that's all I can think of as good friends. And besides who cares if they're purebreds or not." I can start to see his face start to turn pink. "Our parents do and so should you." He says in a snobbish tone. "Well I don't."
I can see smoke pouring out of his eyes as his pink face turns red, red as a tomato. "I'm telling my father about this!" Was all he said before he stomps away into the hall.

"That was great." A voice behind me said. "I didn't know you had it in you." Said another. I turned around to face Ron and Harry. I blush saying oh. Mackenzie smiles saying that Draco had it handed to him. We talked for a while laughing at Malfoy's face and how he stomp away so easily. They also all thanked me for sticking up for them, even though I didn't have to. But I explain to them that they were my friends and that friends stick together even through tough times.

Classes has started and my first class of the day was Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall. When we all say down and it was time for class she starts talking about the class. "Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts. Anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back." She looks sternly towards a couple of kids in the back of the room who have been giggling and talking throughout her speech. "You have been warned."

I look over at her desk as she changes it into a pig and then back into a desk. I awe In amazement as I wanted to do that so badly.

I was now writing notes, and in a few she will have us try turning a match into a needle. I had butterflies in my stomach as they gently pressed against it. "Now lets begin." She says as she handed out the matches. I put down my quill and got out my wand. I mumble some words in hope of the match to turn into a sharp pointy needle, but my luck was not with me today as some dust floated in the air and disappeared."This sucks." I whispered to Harry. He nodded in agreement. "I can't get mine either." I am grateful that I'm not the only one who is struggling.

I look around and notice that Hermione has got it to work. She has turned the match into a needle. I feel this warm kind of hate creep into my bones and I quickly notice it was jealousy. And I am in fact jealous. How can I not be able to do a simple magic trick? It sucks because I even read ahead so I would be prepared too. I hear a groan come out from Ron, and I can understand his struggle. "Of course she could do it." Ron mumble under his breath.

Professor McGonagall speaks up and the noise from the class room has turn into dead silence. "Only one of your classmates has turn this match into a needle." She says sternly. She then nods her head towards Hermione's direction and asks her to do it again. Hermione does so and mumbles the words needed for the spell. The match transforms into a shiny new needle leaving us all to envy her.

After that class was dismiss leaving us to pack up our things and head out to our next class. I notice Hermione still gathering her things so I decided to tell Mackenzie, Harry, and Ron that I would catch up with them later. And with that I headed towards her greeting her politely.

"Eliza, right?" I nod my head yes. "I'm Hermione. Its nice to meet you." She says holding out her hands to shake. I take her hand and shake it back. "Its nice to meet you too." I reply back. "Anyways, I was wondering if you can help me with that lesson. I'm stuck and if I'm going to get at least a decent grade, then I'm going to need some help." She smiles warmly at me. "Oh course I will help you! Can you meet me in the Great Hall after classes are over?" She asks excitingly. "Uh yes I can." I say happily. And with that we parted ways, my next class being History Of Magic with Professor Binns.
