13. The Choice After Death

"Hello Fred." A deep voice said. I opened my eyes.

"Wha- Where am I?" I popped up and looked around quickly.

"What was the last thing that you remember, Fred?" The voice asked.

"Who are you?" I yelled back. I looked around. The area around me was white. I couldn't see anything but white as far I looked, or as close up.

"You will find out soon." The voice replied. "Now, answer my question. What is the last thing that you remember?"

"I w-was..." I began, but paused. "I was at the battle! Percy just apologized... and- a-and..."

"Yes?" The voice asked calmly. "Please continue Mr. Weasley.

"There was an explosion..." I said quietly. "And now... I'm here."

"Why are you here?" The voice asked.

"I... did I die?" I guessed. The voice paused.

"Yes Fred." It said shortly. "You did." I looked down at my feet. Then I noticed something- my stomach. I wasn't breathing. I tried. I tried again. I couldn't, but it didn't harm me. I didn't feel any different. I looked up.

"Who are you?" I called out. suddenly, I felt something behind me. I wheeled around, and I saw, I was facing the great Professor Dumbledore. "Pro-Professor!" Dumbledore smiled.

"Call me Albus." He said softly. "Now Fred, come along."

"What?" I asked. "Where to?"

"The feast." He replied simply. Then, a door appeared suddenly in front of us, and we exited into a huge room full of people. They all looked confused. Some were old, some were young. Some I recognized.

"Fred!" I heard behind me. I turned around and saw Lupin and Tonks running up to me from behind. I ran to them and embraced them.

"You died too?" Tonks said. Her hair was her original color- brown.

"Uh- yeah..." I said quietly.

"I'm sorry about that." Lupin nodded. Then, we turned to the front of the room where Dumbledore began talking.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" He announced. "All of you have sadly, just died."

"Pfft, not sadly for me!" A man near me whispered to an old lady next to him. He had a whole in his temple.

"The old bloke shot himself." Lupin explained to me with a whisper. I nodded, then turned my attention to the front of the room.

"You now are facing a choice." Dumbledore continued. "To go back to Earth, to your families as a ghost, or to spend your days here in harmony. You will not age unless you wish too, and you may watch down on your families. The choice is yours, but please, choose quickly. First up is Jane Allwin. If you wish to be a ghost, Jane, walk through the purple portal. If you wish to live here, go through that door right over there." He pointed to a big brown door on the left of him.

Jane Allwin was a short girl with brown pigtails. She looked about 13.

"Poor girl..." Tonks whispered sadly next to me. Jane hurried to the front, but paused for a brief moment before exiting into the portal.

"Do you wish to stay here... or be a ghost?" Dumbledore asked. Jane hesitated, and began to walk towards the purple portal. Before she left, she turned and whispered,

"Goodbye.." And she disappeared behind the portal. There were about 20 people before Lupin was called up. Without hesitating he walked through the brown door. Tonks did the same when she was called. But when Dumbledore called "Fred Weasley," I walked slowly to the front, taking my time. I wasn't sure what to do. George would miss me surely, and I wanted to be with him. But not in that way. I turned and followed Tonks and Lupin into the brown door.
