41. Till The Sun Dies

Little do you know
How I’m breaking while you fall asleep
Little do you know
I’m still haunted by the memories
Little do you know
I’m trying to pick myself up piece by piece

Y/N sits up in bed, rubbing at her eyes and sighing under her breath. She stares at nothing for a while, then she’s turning to look at the body next to her. The blond’s asleep – on his back with an arm under his head and his other hand resting on his stomach. He doesn’t normally sleep like that and she starts to think that he’s just faking being asleep, but then little snores start to sound and she knows that he probably is asleep.

He's oblivious, that's what he is. He probably doesn’t even know that she’s up, hurting, fighting back tears because she’s still so hurt. Like, she’s told him that she's forgiven him but she’s having a hard time trying to forget it. She knows he never meant to do it. He never meant to hurt her. And, like, it’s clear, yeah? That he’s guilty, really guilty for doing what he’s done, because when she'd confronted him about it, his blue eyes became lighter and as they spoke more, a single tear rolled down his cheek and he wiped it away so quickly like he’d been forcing his tears back the whole time.

Y/N’s trying. She's trying so hard to fix herself again. Luke’s there to help her – she knows he’ll gladly help piece her back, no matter how many shards there may be. But she’s stubborn and she's independent and she wants to fix herself, without his help. And he’s letting her.

That’s why Luke's oblivious. He probably doesn’t know that she’s still hurting. He probably thinks that she’s okay again.

But she’s not. She’s not okay. She doesn’t know how to be okay anymore.

Little do you know
I know you’re hurting while I’m sound asleep
Little do you know
All my mistakes are slowly drowning me
Little do you know
I’m trying to make it better piece by piece

Luke hears the silent ruffle of the sheets, and then the soft patter of footsteps that slowly fade away as they walk away. As she walks away. His eyes open slowly, then he turns his head to look at the closed door that she’s only just shut behind her. He wasn’t asleep. He couldn’t sleep, not anymore, not since he’d done what he did – not since he'd hurt her.

All his mistakes come to haunt him every goddamn night. Every time he shuts his eyes, it’s like someone just throws every single bad thing he’s done in his face and refuses to let him sleep. He’s hurt her and he knows that and it keeps him up at night because all he wants is to tell her that he understands, and that he wants to help her, too, but he doesn’t because he knows what she’s like. He knows that she acts like everything’s okay but she’s not because everything isn’t okay and.

Luke’s done the one thing he swore to himself that he’d never do. He’s hurt her. He’s caused her pain. And he’ll never be able to accept that.

Oh wait, just wait
I love you like I’ve never felt the pain
Just wait
I love you like I’ve never been afraid

There are pictures of them around the house. Some of them more proper than others. Some more candid, more random, but so genuine that neither of them could resist printing said pictures out and placing them in frames which would then be placed on shelves, or little tables.

Y/N’s in the kitchen, a glass of water in hand and she’s just leaning on her side against the counter. There’s a frame barely five metres away from where she’s at, on the little side tables beside the lounge. Luke’s hugging her from behind in that one and she’s smiling – probably laughing – with her head turned to the side so that her face is almost completely hidden since it’s buried in Luke’s neck. Luke’s smiling, dimples on full display. It’s a good picture.

They’d gone out with Y/N’s family, and they were only talking prior. Laughing a lot, too, because Luke’s got a beautiful smile and an adorable laugh and Y/N loves to make him laugh and smile. He’d pulled her into a hug then – those mindless ones. The ones where he’s just laughing and then shaking his head in pure fondness as he wrapped his arms around her waist. Her mother called for them and she’d turned, but Luke kept his arms wrapped around her – then the picture was snapped.

Y/N shuts her eyes, letting the one tear slide down her cheek. She’s hurt and she’s afraid but she doesn’t want to lose him because he’s the best goddamn thing that’s ever happened to her. All she needs is a little more time. She’ll get over what he’s done, she’ll get over the hurt that she’s feeling. She knows she will. Then she’ll be able to love him as wholly as he deserves to be loved. All she needs a little more time.

“Wait for me,” she mumbles out loud. “Please wait for me.”

I’ll wait, I’ll wait
I love you like you’ve never felt the pain
I’ll wait
I promise you don’t have to be afraid

Luke gets out of bed, threading his fingers through his hair. He pulls open the bedroom door quietly and makes his way out, silently looking for Y/N but not wanting to call out her name just yet. The kitchen light’s turned on so he makes his way over. She’s in there, of course. Because if it wasn’t her, then it’d probably be a robber trying to get a little snack or something. Which was highly unlikely but hey, you never know what could happen.

Y/N is in there. She’s got a glass of water in hand and she’s just staring at nothing. Her eyes aren’t even looking at him but he can already see the wheels turning in her head – how she’s thinking so hard about something that it’s made her completely zoned out. He takes his time, then. Takes his time to look at her – to look at her face. Her hair’s a mess and she’s got zero make up on and Luke is still so smitten with her, still thinks she’s the prettiest girl to walk the earth.

That’s why he can’t let her go. He’s never felt this much for a girl before and it’s scary but it’s reassuring because he knows that this means that they’re in this for the long run. He wants that – a life. He wants a life with her.

Please wait for me,” he hears her say, mostly to herself, but he still feels his heart crack.

Luke makes his way over to her, going behind her and then slipping his long arms around her middle. He bends his head down, placing a kiss to the side of her neck and she's instantly relaxing back into his hold – like she can’t stop herself from doing so.

“I will,” Luke mumbles into her skin. “I’ll wait. I promise I’ll wait.”

‘Cause little do you know
I, I love you 'til the sun dies
