29. bye LuKISS

“Please, Y/N, just listen to me,” Luke begs, almost on the verge of going down onto his knees and tugging on her wrists and then tying their two separate set of hands together just so that she’ll listen. “I didn’t mean to, I swear. It was the first and the last time, baby. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”

She chokes out a laugh, and it’s so forced and so fake that Luke’s wincing at the sound of it. “You didn’t mean to?” She echoes incredulously, “What – was it an accident?” She drawls out sarcastically.

He winces back again, not because she's yelling or speaking with so much venom in her tone that he's got to wince back. No. He’s wincing because although she sounds mad, the tone of something else overpowers that anger. She sounds hurt, and hearing her sound so hurt is hurting him, too. “I was drunk and I was missing you, and I didn’t think – and I, God, I didn’t mean to, baby, I swear,” he rambles on, trying to take a step towards her but she moves back immediately.

“Please, Y/N, I’m so fucking sorry. I really didn’t mean to, I promise I’ll never do it again. I love you so much, I love you more than life itself and I – I can’t live without you. God. Please forgive me, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

Y/N sniffles, a lone tear dripping out of the corner of her eye. She takes in a deep breath, clenching her jaw and then tilting her head back before her hand is going to hastily wipe away the tear. She turns back to look at him, “Do you know what the worst part about this is?” She asks instead, completely ignoring his begging and pleading for forgiveness.

Luke says nothing. Just looks at her. His eyes are a lighter shade of blue and they’re stained with unshed tears, because he’s hurt her and that’s the last thing he wanted to ever do.

“The worst part is that I knew this was going to happen, sooner or later,” she says in a quiet tone and Luke feels this horrible feeling in his stomach and heart and head and everywhere.

“Y/N – ” Luke starts to say. About to defend himself: say he’s never cheated on her before. That one night was a one-time thing. He didn’t even know why he did it because practically everyone (and himself) knew how bloody in love he was with this girl who’s standing in front of him. So fucking in love with her, that even when her hair’s a mess, her lips are chapped, her eyes are glassy and there are tears slowly running down her cheeks – he can still say he’s never seen someone more beautiful than her.

Y/N shakes her head, “M'just saying, yeah?” She sniffles. “I’m not good enough for you. I know that. But what hurts the most is that I had finally managed to convince myself that, maybe, just maybe, you love me as much as I love you and that I had no reason to be afraid that you’d leave me. Let alone, cheat on me.”

“Y/N, baby, no, you know I love you. I love you so fucking much, I can’t even comprehend how I’ve survived before I even met you. Baby, you’ve always been good enough for me – ”

“No, I haven’t,” she interrupts him with another mirthless laugh. Her fingers run through her hair, brushing bits out of her face. “Because if I was, you wouldn’t have needed someone else to fill in for my role. I’m just not good enough for the almighty Luke Hemmings, and I never will be. I get it.”

“Baby, – ”

“Luke,” she says, her voice higher than his so that she's overpowering him. He stops, mouth agape and he’s sure that he’s going to start crying. Oh look. Something wet is trickling down his cheek. “Just…” she sighs, shaking her head, “Stop. Just, stop, Luke. Please.” Y/N’s voice is soft, like it’s hurting to talk.

She screws her eyes shut. More tears escape from the corner of her eyes. They race down her cheeks, then they drop to the floor with the softest of plops. Y/N opens her eyes once more, and Luke’s still gaping at her because he thinks he knows what’s happening but he does not want it to happen. It was a mistake. Humans made mistakes.

“Y/N, please,” his voice cracks. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I was drunk, and I know that’s no excuse but – fuck. I just, I missed you so fucking much, and I couldn’t do anything about it and I just, I drank and drank and I got drunk and I did something stupid. And I can't – I wish I didn’t do it. I – I, fuck. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Please. It’ll never happen again. It’s you and me against the world, remember?” Luke asks and his voice is tinged with so much desperation and it’s cracking so much, but he really doesn’t give a fuck about how pussy-ish he’s making himself out to be. He’d do anything for her to not leave him. Give him another chance.

The girl in question cracks the tiniest of smiles, but there’s no joy behind that smile. It’s forced and staged and filled with nothing but pain, pain, pain. “You said you’d stay, then you left. I get the whole leaving for tour thing, yeah? I get it. But I trusted you, to not cheat on me. And it looks to me like you’re completely fine with what you’d done – ”

“That’s not true! – ”

“– Because you didn’t even bother telling me about it, Luke! If you would’ve been honest and admitted to sleeping with someone else then I probably would've eventually forgiven you! Because I would’ve known that you felt guilty enough to admit to it.”

“I’m sorry, Y/N!” Luke exclaims. More tears. “I’m so fucking sorry. I wanted to tell you the fucking moment I woke up and saw that it wasn’t you I was with but I was scared, okay?! I was terrified that you’d leave me, and I couldn’t deal with that. Not while I was on tour. I was terrified that you’d rip my heart out and stomp on it and I would have to pretend that I was fine for the rest of tour when I wasn’t, okay?! I can’t fucking live without you, Y/N. Don’t you get it? You are my oxygen. I cannot live without you.”

She lets out a single disbelieving laugh, “I would rip your heart out? Luke, are you even listening to what you’re saying?!” She finally exclaims, throwing her hands up in exasperation.

“And are you listening to what I'm saying?!” He almost yells, tugging at his hair roughly. “I cannot live without you, Y/N. I need you like I need fucking oxygen to survive."

She sniffles, another broken smile coming unto her lips. "You should’ve thought of that before you went and fucked someone else,” she says quietly; so quietly.

“Baby, please – ”

“You took a part of me, Luke. You ripped it from my soul.”

“I’m sorry, Y/N, just please – ”

“It’s lucky you only took a part. Because if I gave you my life, it’d, without a doubt, be my demise,” Y/N says softly, continuing to talk as though he hadn’t interrupted her at all. She looks at him through her lashes. “Just…” she sighs, wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand, “Go, Luke. Just… leave.”

Luke staggers forward, “Please, Y/N. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” he’s begging, full-on begging now. “I’m sorry. Don’t leave me. I need you. I’m so sorry. I can’t live without you,” his voice ends in a whisper and he’s hoping it’ll change her mind.

But she shakes her head, sniffling more. “Leave, Luke,” she says softly. “I’m not – I can’t –” she starts then she cuts herself off with a sigh and a shake of her head. "You don’t need me. You know you don’t. So leave now, while you’ve got some dignity left and I have the tiniest bit of pride that I can still salvage.“

"Y/N,” Luke says, biting so hard on his bottom lip that he’s pretty sure he can taste blood. “Please,” his voice cracks. “Don’t leave me.”

She shakes her head again, opening her mouth to say something, but shutting it and rolling her bottom lip into her mouth. “I was going to say some quote about cheaters but I really can’t come up with anything so just, please, Luke. Please. Leave,” she’s still talking so softly and she sounds so hurt and that’s what makes Luke’s heart break more and more and more.

“It was an accident, Y/N, I swear, I didn’t mean to do it, – ” he tries again but she just sighs, shaking her head.

“How can you even say that? What – did you accidentally get naked and accidentally fall on a girl who also, completely coincidentally, happened to be naked too?!” She asks and her hands are tugging at her hair in frustration as she looks at him.

Luke just stares at her helplessly because she’s made a very valid point, but he doesn't want this to be the end. It can’t be.

“Luke, please. Leave,” Y/N says again, taking in a deep breath and her voice is thick and he knows that that means she’s about to break and start crying the most heart wrenching of sobs – where her wrecked sobs were silent and her body’s shaking and nothing can be done to stop her tears, except to hold her and let her cry into your chest. “Leave, and never come back,” she finishes off in a whisper.

“Y/N,” he says her name with so much emotion and more tears stream down his face.

She only shakes her head, tears leaking out of the corner of her eyes, too. “Get out, Luke. Get out."

And there's something her in beautiful eyes, something in her tone and pained voice that makes him finally nod, sniffling and rubbing at his eyes. He’s caused her enough pain. He doesn’t want to hurt her anymore than he already has. He turns on his heel, walking towards the front door, but he’s barely able to put his hand on the doorknob before he’s glancing at her over his shoulder. He swivels his shoulders so that he’s looking at her more properly. She’s moved from her spot, her back now against a wall and her arms are crossed tightly across her body – hugging herself so tightly. Her jaw is clenched and she’s chewing so hard on her bottom lip.

"I love you,” Luke says, because he can’t leave without letting her know that he still does.

Y/N takes in a deep breath, “Maybe,” she allows with a small shrug of her shoulders. “But not enough. So leave, Luke Hemmings. It was amazing while it lasted, but good things have to come to an end. Walk out of that door, and walk out of my life.”
