6. The Troubles of Tender Shoes

The Troubles of Tender Shoes

“What? That can't be true… I … I have to get home.” I am hysterical and my voice has gone up an octave.

“Calm down child, getting worked up won't get you home, and you certainly won't figure this out tonight. Come now, you must be exhausted. You have had enough troubles for one night. You can stay here with me in the spare bedroom until we figure this out.”

I follow  silently behind Meme. When we get into the room she gives me a nightgown and leaves the room. I mindlessly change and get into bed. I am in shock. I didn't know what to do. I am stuck here in the past no idea how to get home. I worry for my family. What will they do when they discover I’m missing? Poor mother will be beside herself with worry.  my head is spinning with questions. I just lay there, staring out the window. I don't know what time it is when I drop off, but soon I find myself awakened by some light pouring through the window. It is a clear blue sky. The hustle and bustle of the city below ring through the windows. It isn't until I get up out of bed and notice what I am wearing that the events of last night all come crashing back to me. I go downstairs to join Meme for breakfast.

As I enter the kitchen Meme greets me with a smile.

“Good morning dear, I hope you’ve slept well.”

“Good morning Anita.” I don't quite know what to call her.

“Oh, child, you can call me Meme I don't mind.” Her face lights up with glee.

“Okay well, I slept very well, thank you for the accommodations.” Giving a slight incline of her head she motions for me to sit at the table. As I sit down I scan the table, something catches my eye. There! There is a floral cup and saucer, I know that cup from somewhere, I just can't place it.

“Pardon?” Deep in thought I missed what she was saying

“I said would you like some coffee? I just finished making breakfast.” Meme is standing across from me with the sun shining on her features. Meme looks much younger than the last I saw of her. She has soft blue eyes. Her hair is the color of a beam of sunshine, her nose and cheeks are plump. Her face is slightly rounded but with the smile lines that trace her face you know she is kind. Meme would do anything for anyone, she is very kind and that is her strength. But what is a strength can also be a weakness.

Coming back to reality I just say, “Yes please.” She sets the cup in front of me and pours dark black coffee in my cup. The smell alone brings me back to acting like myself. “Thank you, did you make all of this for me?” She is setting out bowls of scrambled eggs, oatmeal, jam, and fruit. Plates of bacon, toast, and a muffins, too.

“Well not all for you, you couldn't possibly eat all of this. The rest of it is for the ladies, today is our meeting.”

“Oh do you have it here?”

“Well not in here per se but in the store out front.”

“Right, well, if you don't mind I think I may stroll down to the park after a while. To clear my head and possibly decide a plan of action of the situation I find myself in.”

“Hm, well I don't see why not, you can't stay in the house you’ll go mad. But you can't go out in the dress you wore last night, no, I will find something suitable for you to wear in this era.” She hands me a platter of food and leaves the room. I eat what she handed me and go upstairs. When I get back to the room I had slept in Meme is standing there holding an elegant dress made of mull with applications of jewel beetle elytra.  Its color oscillating from green to purple, can be found on the dress, and on the shawl. It has beautiful and splendid decoration design with jewel beetle elytra.

“This was my daughter's sun dress, it looks as though it should fit you.”

“It is beautiful, thank you.”

“My daughter Allegra is much like you, she too is a traveler. Very kind, she has a good heart.” She holds sad eyes now. She goes to the closet and grabs a pair of flats that matched the dress. The uppers covered in braids of straw and horsehair; deep-green silk ribbon trimming and cockade; lined purple silk taffeta; squarish toes; thick leather sole. They are just as marvellous as the dress. “Shall I help you in?”

“Of course.” I walk over to her and she gets me ready. Every string and button done perfectly into place. When the dress is done she styles my hair with loops around the ears and pulls into a bun at the back of my head. When she is done I look in the mirror, it is wonderful.

After getting dressed properly I decide to go for a walk about the city. To see what has changed by the looks of things, a lot has changed. I leave the shop and head towards the city center. Horse drawn carriages stroll pass as I make my way down the street. Taking in the sights, I walk towards the park. Deep in thought I turn on the corner of Duke and Bridgework. I was torn from my thought when I run into something, or rather someone.

“Begging your pardon sir, I am very sorry for this incident,” I say quickly, looking at my skirts.

“That’s quite alright miss, no need to wring your hands.” I know that voice it is vaguely familiar. Putting my hands at my sides I finally look up at him. It isn't just anyone, it is Marcellus.

“Oh, hello Miss Hartford, and where might you be headed in such a flourish, if you don’t mind my asking,” he says with a hint of amusement in his tone.

“Well if you must know, I was en route to the park for a stroll, I wanted to clear my head.”

“Yes, well you left in a hurry last night. I’m afraid we didn’t get that drink you had asked for. If you don’t mind my intrusion to your walk.”He offers me his arm. “May I?”

Blushing only slightly I take his arm. Grabbing my skirts with my right hand and his arm with my left we walk in silence for a while.

“Mr. Sperry if I may ask,” I say.

“You may.”

“Pardon my rudeness but weren’t you headed somewhere. Don’t let my company keep you from more persistent affairs.”

“Oh? Does my company dwindle your spirits?”

“No, merely a courtesy Mr. Sperry.” My cheeks flush and I look to my feet.

“Yes, well, I was going to see my father.”

“Would they have you join them?”

“No, you are much better company.” He winks at me in mirth.

Startled by his sudden tenderness the toe of my shoe catches  on the rock that had not passed my eye. I give a small yelp as I start to fall, but the fall never comes. A gentle pressure coming from my hip and the heat of his body pressing to mine is when I realize he has caught me. His hand holds fast on my hip as I start to look up at him. Heat rises in my face. Not daring a glance at his face I merely step back murmuring a polite thank you and curtsy.

Clearing his throat Marcell offers his arm again.

“Oh, oh I should be going, I am to meet my grandmother. We are to have tea, and I am helping with the shop.” Before he can say anything more I give one last shallow curtsy, turn brusquely on my heel and walk away not daring to look back for I know my face is flushed.
