Clockwork Curse

A simple Halloween prank, that's all it was. A Halloween prank that would tick, tick, tick like clockwork...

3. Tick, Tock

"Tock, tick, tock, counts the clock,

Tick, tock, tick, fades the clock..."

Skitty's eyes snapped to the faint tick, tick, tick of the clock in the corner of the room, pupils following the little hand moving round the numbers. Like a nervous twitch, his fingers started drumming slowly on the table, his heartbeat pulsing heavily under his eyelid and arms quivering like a rabbit caught in the headlights. "I remember. I remember I have to remember something but I can't figure out what it is I have to remember, something important, it's gotta be remembered by midnight tonight otherwise we repeat it, what is it, what is it, what is it..." The detective, startled by the sudden movement and noise, jumped back and stood, knocking over his chair in the process. Following Skitty's gaze, the detective glanced back and forth between the boy and the clock. What was it that he needed to remember exactly?

Simultaneously, Jenson Skitty stilled as the lights in the police station all cut out. The only noise within the room that contained Skitty and the detective was the scrape as his chair was pushed back and the tick, tock, tick of the clock hanging on the wall. "I don't want to remember, and so I won't. Surely you'll remember it, right? As a gift for yourself?" The detective was, at once, bemused and strangely thankful towards the boy, as it seemed they both understood how fragile the prank had been for everybody involved.

It wasn't until the next prank, the next Halloween for the detective to understand just what Jenson Skitty had said. Maybe he would remember, after all.
