Reese has grown up in the world of the aftermath of a devastating war, raised by what used to be the enemy of humans: the Scintulla. Now, though, someone wants to finish off the scarce Scintulla, as revenge for the decimated human race. (endfic comp)

2. Ryn and Reese

"Reese, would you stop being childish for just a minute?" asks Ryn, annoyed.

"No," says Reese. "I'm having fun, you butt."

"If you haven't noticed, our situation isn't fun."

"It's never fun because of you."

"Untrue. It's not fun because the world ended."

"It ended sixteen years ago, my dearest. I don't think this constitutes as the end of the world."

"So, it ended once. We're in the aftermath."

"And it isn't so bad. Nature has taken over once again. Sure there's rubble, but rivers and trees have overtaken most roads. Vines cover the buildings' rubble. Trees grow nearly everywhere. Animals flourish. No war. It's all good."

"You don't know that. For us, it's good. Maybe on the other side of the continent it's not."

"So we don't worry about that. We don't know anyone over there to worry about."

"But it may affect us."

"Key word there, Ryn, is 'may'." Ryn does his weird groan/sigh/whinny. He happened to be a mix of a dragon and horse, called an Equignis. The vague shape of a horse, but built more like a Drakon. His scales are dark red are along his body and tail, his legs being gray, his head and neck the same color but not scaled. His tail is nearly as long as his body and has black hair on the tip. The hair runs up his back and onto his neck.

He looks vaguely like a Kirin, but they had been wiped out over a decade ago.

Ryn and Reese bicker back and forth until sunset.

Reese digs a hole and places dried twigs and leaves in it. A spark runs up Ryn's back from his tail, and he blows a small fire in the hole. The twigs catch and they have a small fire going.

"I'm not going to feed you, so you're either going to morph to human or eat from the ground," says Reese. She holds a pouch up. Ryn whinnies indignantly, but does the grotesque morph to human.

In this form, he is sturdily built with the odd mixture of pink and ashen skin, which is a bit rough, and long, black hair. He appears to be late teens.

Reese throws a long shirt at him. He puts it on.

He eats their findings and she begins to roast a small rodent she had killed.

"Are you sure it wasn't a Scintulla?" asks Ryn.

"It's eyes weren't colorful," says Reese. "So it wasn't a Scintulla." She looks into Ryn's fiery eyes. "I know so."

After that, Ryn morphs back and they sleep separately, having not slept near each other in four years, when Freyja, Ryn's mother, had died. It was both of their faults.
