Reese has grown up in the world of the aftermath of a devastating war, raised by what used to be the enemy of humans: the Scintulla. Now, though, someone wants to finish off the scarce Scintulla, as revenge for the decimated human race. (endfic comp)

13. Quickly

"Incoming!" yells the Dire.

"Absirj, absirj. Xla wleapj wlipp wzapp. naas xla gurxarxw zapp," says Reese, cutting her hand. The blood pools in her hand, glows silver, then expands around her and the Dire. The bullets and arrows ricochet off, heading back to where they came from.

"Do you think it's Targaten?" yells Reese.

"We weren't warned, but yes, I think so," yells the Dire. "How much farther to this stream?"

"Two miles," yells Reese.

The men keep firing at them and the Dire gets closer.

"Why are you getting closer?" asks Reese.

"The shield reflects the bullets. It will injure them." As they get closer, a red haired person stares at her, horror on his face. He holds a gun by his side, forgotten. His other hand grips his hair, nearly pulling it out.

They stare at each other as the pass, men going down around him.

"Ryn?" calls Reese. None of them hear her, except the Dire.

"You know one of these men?" he asks with disgust.

"One. Only one. My old friend...a Scintulla," mutters Reese.

"What species?" inquires the Dire.

"Iquignis," says Reese.

"What is he doing with the humans?" asks the Dire, sounding angry.

"I don't know," Reese mutters as they fly past. "I don't know..."

As they approach the stream, Reese's hand grows warm.

"We're good," says Reese. The Dire slows to a stop, letting her get down. They walk to the stream, where the Mandra are swimming.

"There she is!" yells one of the Mandra. "Reese, daughter of Freyja!"

"Freyja?" asks the Dire.

"I told you my guardian died four years ago," murmurs Reese. "And yes, Freyja. Lady, whatever."

"I knew Lady Freyja and Lord Rynos. Their son...Ryn," the Dire realizes. "The boy lives."

"I didn't know. Just leave it. I doubt he knows. He was two when his dad died," says Reese.

"I was second in command in the final battle," says the Dire. "I watched my friend, Lord Rynos, die at the hand of humans."

"I'm sorry," says Reese, "but we've got another battle to face, whether or not Ryn is on our side or not. We're here for the Mandra."

"Is that why you are here?" asks a Mandra. They had been silently watching the exchange between human and Dire.

"Yes," says Reese. "The favor? I'm cashing it in now. A group of humans threatens the lives of hundreds of Scintulla, and we wish to drive them out. We need your help."

"We are at your service!" yell the Mandra. "But where shall this battle take place?" one inquires.

"Twenty miles or so away, in a forest. How many of you are there?" asks Reese.

"About two dozen, miss!" yells a Mandra.

"I think I can manage," huffs Reese. "Will it be a problem for you?"

The Dire huffs indignantly.

"Okay, then," says Reese. She slings her pack around and gestures for the Mandra to get in.

"We need to hurry; the humans will go to the forest quickly," warns the Dire.

"We got here in a few hours. It'll take them at least that long to get to the forest. And you're much faster," sas Reese.

She puts her pack on and gets back on the Dire.

He howls, and then bursts off like a bullet, back towards the forest.
