Reese has grown up in the world of the aftermath of a devastating war, raised by what used to be the enemy of humans: the Scintulla. Now, though, someone wants to finish off the scarce Scintulla, as revenge for the decimated human race. (endfic comp)

17. Listen To Me

It's just before dawn when Reese gets back to the Scintulla. The Dire is there, waiting for her, his wolf face angry. She walks right past him, trying to not show her exhaustion.

"And where were you?"

"You're not my guardian. You are not my leader. You have no authority over me, but I need you to get the humans northeast, to that cave."

"And why should I listen to you?" growls the Dire.

"Because I came up with an alternative that flinging them halfway across the continent," says Reese.

"And that would be?"

"None of your concern. Your concern, Dire, is to get the humans to the cave. They'll be gone, I promise."

"Again, why should I listen to you?"

"Because without me, they'll stay here and slaughter you all!" yells Reese. The Scintulla around her stop talking. "You all have sorted powers, but I have most or all. You can be powerful, yes, but your powers are so different, they may conflict. And some might not help.

"They Aesch are strong, the Avem can create bursts of air, the Cerva can make plants move and stuff, you, Dire, can run incredible speeds, and your howl can render a human deaf, the Mure can turn invisible. You and the Aesch could work together yes, but they also have horses, which are fast. The Avem would have to have lots of hair to knock over a horse. The Cerva could trip them, yes, but not all. And the remaining would shoot down the Avem. The Mure, I'm sorry, I don't know. Bite them? The Mandra could flood them, get them stuck in mud. They could create a wave, but to them that could be fatal.

"You are all powerful, yes, but to defeat humans during the war, I know it took Drakons and Kirin to defeat them. And where are they now?" Reese gestures around. "They're gone, because the humans slaughtered them all. These humans are ruthless and crazed. Nomads are okay, but groups...groups are bad. Especially in large numbers." She turns to the Dire. "So I need you to listen. With my plan, they'll be gone, I promise you, and won't return. They won't be anyone's problem, got that? They'll be alone."

"What is your plan?" asks the Dire, finally. Reese looks up to the sky, the sky turning gray.

"It's dawn," she says, ignoring his question. "No time to explain, but I need you to lure them to the cave. Less deaths for all."

"What will you do?" questions an Aesch.

"I'm going now. To the cave. I'll be there. But I need them in front of the mouth. That's all." Reese cuts her hand. "Gpuwa virka, gpuwa gipp. Xluwa argpuwaj wlipp fa svuxagxaj."

"You'll be okay in close range combat," she pants. "Watch out for bullets and arrows, though."

She sprints off in the direction of the cave.

"You heard the girl," says the Dire. "Engage!"
