Serena Willows has always had something unusual about her, and she is determined to learn more about it. One day, her parents die a tragic death while secretively speaking about a gift that she has.

How did I get here, sitting in a bleak, empty room, feeling extremely uncomfortable because of the woman with the scarlet nails vigilantly watching me from the window? The fact that I’m in a life-or-death situation doesn't make things better. Well, I suppose the broken lamp in the corner does help a bit. At least I get to visualize light coming from it.

Anyways, as you’ve probably noticed, it’s a bit of a long story...

-One Year Ago-

Cambridge, England

My parents have always been a bit distant, but they treat me well, as good parents would. Mum is a bit odd at times though. Some days, all she does is peek out the windows, or sit in a rocking chair, going back and forth, back and forth, all the while muttering to herself. Sometimes it’s about locks, other times it’s about safety and those "night watchers". Today, I was extremely irked by her strange behavior. Mum was whispering about locking the doors and whatnot, and something strange suddenly overcame her. She frantically leapt to her feet, bolted to the front door, and barricaded it. She repeatedly shrieked, “Charles, they’ve come! They’re going to take her away from us. They want her gift!”. After that, she slunk down and curled up in the corner, sobbing until she drifted asleep.

I’ve been told that she has OCD, but honestly, I think it’s something much, much more.

It’s 10:00. I walk upstairs, about to get ready for bed. As I look in the mirror, I contemplate my appearance; Dark brown wavy hair, with streaks of golden blonde that flows down to my waist, pale blue eyes like ice, a cool, light complexion, freckles that run across my nose and along my face, and then the.. sapphire. Please don’t ask why I happen to have a gem on my face, because I really have no remote clue. It’s always been there on the top left corner of my forehead. Round, flawless, and smaller than the size of a pencil eraser. I know it must sound incredibly odd, but no one knows where it came from. I’ve lived with it all my life, and despite the constant stares, I’ve learned to deal with it. Someday, I hope to find out what it means, if anything.

As I roll into bed, breathing in the aroma of pine and cedarwood, I hear voices coming from the office downstairs.

“Charles, she’s not safe anymore. They know.”

“Elizabeth, honey, I’m sure you are just being paranoid. It’s impossible that they will ever find out... She’s not even eighteen yet.”

“Charles, we have to tell her though, she will be eighteen in a matter of weeks.”

“But Elizabeth, maybe it’s better if she never finds out that—-"

That was the last I heard of their voices. It’s the last I’ll ever hear.

There was the sound of breaking glass that will forever be imbedded in my memory.

The piercing screams of my parents.

Then there was silence.

I’m frozen. Time has stopped right in its tracks. The cries of my parents resound around me, echoing louder and louder, over and over again. Is this some kind of cruel, pitiless joke? Am I dreaming for crying out loud? I pinch myself and fall to the ground. No.. this can’t be happening. The world is closing in around me. My lungs feel numb. I can't breathe. I-I can't do this.

I've got to be strong though. They might still be alive. I muster up they only courage I have left, grab my pocketknife, and walk downstairs, into the office. What I see in front of me, no, I can’t even think about it. It doesn’t even really matter right now, for I’m clubbed over the side of the head, and I tumble over, unconscious, falling into a void of seemingly eternal darkness.

As I come to, after who knows long, I wake up in an empty cell with an eerie glow to it.

I’m still wearing the clothes that I wore as my parents died. I still can’t seem to come to the realization that they’re really gone. I raise my hand up to my head and feel a lump that’s oozing blood. It must be where I was hit.

A man appears out of nowhere in front of the bars of my cell.

“Well, well, well, seems as if Sleeping Beauty finally decided to wake up,” he says. Clearly annoyed, I reach through the bars and punch him in the nose.

“That’s what you get for knocking me out!” I say.

He groans in pain, and manages to spit out, “Hmm.. I like the feisty thing you’ve got going on here.”

I punch him in the face again, and as I do so, he slumps to the floor and collapses.

My face must look aghast, for the woman with the hair like fire now standing right behind him says, “Don’t worry, it’s just a tranquilizer. The effects will wear off in a few hours, but he’ll still be feeling those nasty punches you threw at him. Serves him right, and kudos to you, by the way.” I nod slowly, still trying to comprehend what exactly happened in this short amount of time.

“Who are you?” I ask.

“That doesn’t matter right now, but you can call me Ruby,” she says. “I’m here to get you out of this place.”
