Undercover: Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker is forced to go undercover as a slave, where his pride, strength, and willpower will be challenged like never before.

12. Impatient

Anakin and Mand'ii sat opposite each other, each of them fidgety and impatient.  At last Anakin sighed, unable to take the strain.  He was used to action, and he couldn't control his longing to see what was going on.
        He stood up.
"What are you doing?" Mand'ii asked hurriedly, following his lead.
"I have to find out what's going on," Anakin said determinedly.  "You stay here."
        "But Master Windu said-"
"I know what Master Windu said!" Anakin replied, a little too harshly.  In her surprise, the Twi'lek padawan abruptly sat down again.
Anakin briskly marched out, slamming the door behind him.  Normally he would have felt guilty for snapping at Mand'ii, but he desperately wanted to find out what was happening in the cockpit.
He found Mace and Obi-Wan at the main viewscreen, directing orders at the officers nearby.  Anakin sensed his master's surprise as Obi-Wan whirled around and stared at him.
"Anakin Skywalker, what are you doing here?  I told you to stay in the other room with Mand'ii!"
"I'm old enough to know what's going on!" Anakin protested.
"Who said anything about age?" Obi-Wan snapped.
Mace turned at the sound of the argument.  "What's going on?" he inquired, coming over to the two other Jedi.
Anakin glared at Obi-Wan.  "My master doesn't think I can handle this."
"Now Anakin, I never said-" Obi-Wan intervened.
"Now is not the time for this," Mace interrupted sharply.  "The Separatists are attacking, and we must act quickly or we shall lose this battle."
Anakin stared at him in the amazement.  "The Separatists are-"
Mace went on as if he hadn't heard.  "Obi-Wan, I've requested reinforcements from the Jedi Council.  They're sending Aayla Secura and Plo Koon to help."
"Good," said Obi-Wan.  "We'll need all the help we can get."
All of a sudden, he paused, a thoughtful look on his face.  "Why do you suppose the Separatists are here?"
"Oh, I don't know," Anakin said irritably.  "It's probably just a coincidence.  It's not like the Separatists are allied with the Nikstara gang or something-"
"We didn't ask you," Mace said sternly.
"Mace, my padawan just brought up a very good point," Obi-Wan interjected, causing both Mace and Anakin to stare at him in surprise.
"It's possible that the Separatists may indeed be allied with the Nikstara slave trader gang," Obi-Wan mused.
"That's ridiculous," Mace said.  "Why would the Nikstara gang be allied with the Separatists?  What possible benefits could that alliance provide?"
        "If I may," Anakin started.
Obi-Wan nodded, his temper now under control.  "Go ahead."
"The Separatists may have discovered our plans," Anakin began slowly, still working out the idea in his mind.  "Our plans for my... undercover mission.  Or, they may have discovered that I was in Zartek's possession.  They could have contacted Zartek and offered to pay a lot of money for me."  He winced as he explained this part of his theory, but the other Jedi didn't seem to notice.
"One of the guards we were fighting back at Zartek's plantation could have snuck away and planted a tracking device on our ship, then contacted the Separatists," Anakin concluded.  "And that's how the Separatists found us."
Obi-Wan frowned, thinking quickly.  "It's farfetched, but I suppose it's possible," he said.  "Or this could be a completely unrelated attack."
"Well, we'll just have to wait and see, won't we?" Mace interjected.
Obi-Wan nodded.  "I suppose we will."
