2. Start Up
I pull into the school parking lot the next morning, mind still racing but set on talking to Nash. I see him by the front door, talking to Cameron, Taylor and another blonde boy with a seemingly baby face. They were laughing about something and the rainy overcast didn't seem to bother any other them. I scan around Nash and the lot to see Hayes, luckily I don't see him.. yet.
“Hey.” I say when I get to him.
He gave me a nod and went back to telling the other guys how he almost broke his arm doing a jump off the slope when he went snowboarding on Saturday.
“I heard about your brother.” I shrug. “He's out.”
“Um..” he scratched the back of his neck. “Yeah.” he said quickly then turned back to them.
“Is he here today?”
He sighed loudly. “Yes but don't worry, he has strict orders to stay away from you or he'll go back.” he snapped.
“Whoa, what's your problem? I was just asking.”
He sighed again, this time quieter and as-if he was trying to be patient but I was wearing at it. “What do you want me to say, Liz?” he said calmly then shrugged. “You got my brother arrested.”
“You saw what happen, I-”
“Not the whole thing. He may have been about to hit you but he's still my brother.” he said, walking backwards and started to walk away with Cameron and the other guys.
“I'm sorry.” he shrugged again and turned forward.
“The day has not a been a good start.” I sit down in the back in homeroom.
Jack kissed the top of my head. “I assume you heard about Hayes.” he sat beside me.
So did he.
Hayes walked in. I feel Jack grab my knee and give me a comforting look but don't look at Jack, I lock eyes with Hayes. I felt my spine tingle and my whole body go numb, the world and the nose of the class seemed to go silent as Hayes and I look at each other. His face was soft but his eyes were cold and filled with perspicuous hate. For me. He sits at the first desk in the front of the room, his back facing Jack and I. I let out a quiet sigh of relief. I thought for sure he was gonna come back to us and freak out again. I feel Jack squeeze my knee again, I look at him and nod, as if telling him I'm fine.
“I'm not gonna let anything happen.” he said.
I shrug. “Hayes is unpredictable.”
Jack raised his eye brows at me and tilted his head a bit. “I'm not. Gonna let. Anything happen.” he repeated. “I'm not scared of him.”
I chuckled meagerly.
