35. Chapter Thirty Five

Natalia's POV

"You got the call too?" Jason asked as Addison, Phoebe, and I entered the hospital. Addison ran right to Adelaide who sat in the hospital chair with her hand on her stomach taking deep breaths.

"Yeah, we were at dinner," I replied, hugging him. "Are you okay?"

"For now. How was dinner? I told Add to take you out,"

"It was good. Where's Sally and Mike?"

"They were... um, they were in the car,"

"What? Jase, I'm so sorry," I pulled Jason back into a hug and sighed as his head laid on my shoulder. I rubbed my hands up and down his back, trying to comfort him but I don't think anything would work. Not now.

"Where's mom and dad?" Addison asked.

"They're fine. They're just getting examined," Jason replied. Addison nodded and walked over to the nurse's desk. I watched as the nurse nodded and escorted him to the back.

"How's Bri?" I asked, taking Jason's hand in mine.

"She's in critical condition. They haven't told us anything but I was on the phone with them when they crashed. I heard everything, T. The screaming and the crash. The glass,"

"Why don't we go sit?" He nodded and let me lead him to the chairs, far away from his family. Just the two of us sitting alone in our own corner. "The good thing is that Mike and Sally are okay. I know it would kill you to see more people you love die,"

"It would kill me to see Bria die, Talia. She's like my sister and I can't go through another sister dying. Not again,"

"Hey, everything is gonna be just fine. Bria is going to be fine, alright?" He nodded and closed his eyes. "I'm going to check on Adelaide and see how she's holding up, alright? I'll call Nick to pick up Tommy from my mom's and to bring him here with us. Something tells me we won't be going home tonight," he just nodded again, as if numb to the whole situation.

"Hey," I whispered sitting next to Adelaide.

"She would talk but the doctor ordered her not to talk when she's stressed," Harrison said, putting his hand on Adelaide's knee.

"I got the same thing," he nodded and motioned his head to the side. I walked to the corner where nobody sat and put my hand over my chest. "How is she?"

"Worried as all hell. Before you guys showed up, the doctor who's currently working on Bria told us she was in critical condition. Her airbag deployed sharply and the car was coming from the left making the damage more critical on her than anyone else. But she's skinny, you know? She could get punched and her whole face would bruise,"

"What caused the accident?"

"Someone texting and driving, I think the police said," I scoffed and shook my head.

"Hey, where's her file, do you know?" He nodded and pointed to the nurse's desk. I looked around and made my way to the desk to check out the file. The nurse who sat here previously is still with Addison, which means I have time. I opened the file up and scanned the page. Big words. Lots of big words. I jumped to the words I already know and took a deep breath. "Jesus," I whispered.

"What is it?" Harrison asked as I joined him in the corner again. I shook my head and looked over to Jason who had his hands covering his eyes. "Talia, what is it?"

"I don't want to worry you... She's your sister-in-law, Harrison,

"Thanks for stating the obvious, Natalia."

"The documents say it all, Harrison. The doctors know and now I know. Pretty soon Sally and Mike will know. Then Adelaide. Then Jason. Then Addison. You're a deadman, Harrison,"

I watched as Harrison banged his head against the wall over and over again. I've taken notice to the way he's shifting around with Adelaide, the way he isn't touching her like he used to. I've noticed the change in atmosphere. Even with Adelaide. I wonder if she knows.

Two bodies emerged from the hallway and we all stood up as the bodies appeared to be Sally and Mike. Sally, with tears coating her face as her makeup smeared and Mike as his face held a scowl. Harrison looked over to me and shook his head. He truly is a good man, he's sweet, caring, kind and so much more. But he's the devil for doing this to Adelaide. And to Bria.

"How is she?" I asked.

"Not good. She's in ICU and still in the coma they put her in,"

"They put her in a medically induced coma? Why?" Sally shrugged and sat next to Adelaide. The records said she has a spinal injury, pelvic disfunction, broken bones, shattered knee, and a miscarriage. There should be no reason for a medically induced coma.

"I'll be right back," I whispered.

"Where are you going?" Jason asked, looking up to me.

"To speak with a doctor," I walked up the nurses desk and smiled as she looked up to me. "I'm looking for a nurse or the doctor on call for a Bria Clark,"

"For what reason?"

"Just to check in to see how she is?"

"Are you family?"

"I'm her sister-in-law," close enough. She nodded and lead me into the back to ICU.

"Doctor, this is Bria Clark's sister-in-law. She's here to see how she is," the nurse informed. The doctor turned around and smiled as he saw me.

"Natalia?"

"Mr. York?"

"This is your sister in law?" He asked. I nodded and looked down to Bria. "Thank you Carla. I'll take it from here,"

"Why is she in a coma, Mr. York?"

"Talia-"

"She doesn't have that much of serious injuries. Why would you put her in a coma if the coma would only make thing worse because she can't move?"

"Lying to a nurse about being a family member is being an imposter, you know that right?"

"I'll be her semi sister in law in two years. But answer my question,"

"I can't, Natalia." Bullshit.

"And why not? Bria is Amber's friend too, you know,"

"She has internal bleeding and a serious brain injury. We thought it was a concussion but it was more complicated than that. The impact from the airbag caused damage to the frontal lobe, making it difficult to work around. We have to hold off all surgery until we can repair it or wait it out. And plus, she's traumatized from what happened and from the accident,"

"Can she speak and walk?"

"Walking may be a problem because of her spinal injury but that's only a little bit of physical therapy. Speaking, that may be a problem. Because of where the frontal lobe is located-"

"It affects speaking, initiation, judgment, reaction, emotions, memory and frustrations."

"Someone's been doing their homework,"

"When she wakes up, will she remember anything?"

"Guaranteed she will, yes. Will she remember her entire life, no. But she can remember what she wants to remember. Natalia, she is going to go through a lot of emotions when she wakes up and I don't mean anger. She's going to be frustrated, sexually frustrated, angry, giggly. Depressed about the loss of a child. You need to make sure you and her family are strong in the process of treatment so she has the confidence she needs to continue going through this," I nodded. "Go back out there with her family and send my condolences on Amber's behalf, please?"

"I will, thank you for taking good care of her, Mr. York," he nodded and walked me out to the family.

I sat next to Jason and sighed. "Long talk," he whispered.

"Lots of information."

"Like?"

"Not important. Did Nick show up with Tommy?" Jason shook his head as the door opened.

"Sorry, there was traffic," nick said, handing Tommy to me.

"No problem,"

"How is he with all of this?"

"Let's talk outside," I whispered. The doors closed behind me and I held Tommy closer to my chest. "He's... i think numb to everything,"

"I've seen him in this state before and it only gets worse. Bria is his older sister, like Val,"

"I'm afraid I won't be able to cheer him up, Nick. I don't know how to cheer him up."

"You need to piss him off to get a reaction out of him. Which is why during his mom's funeral, I was a douche. It gets emotion out of him, wakes him up a little." I shook my head and looked inside as Mr. York spoke to the family. Then, everyone lowered their heads.

"Crap. I have to go, thanks for bringing me Tommy," I kissed his cheek and ran inside the hospital only to find everyone turning on each other. Addison and Jason on Harrison. Phoebe on Adelaide. Mike on Sally.

"Says you! How many times have you cheated?!" Harrison yelled at Jason.

"Never! I'm a boyfriend who dedicated his life to his girl, to his family. I don't look at any other girl, ever. The only girl I see when I close my eyes at night is Talia. And the only girl I want is here with me. I've never wanted any other girl than Talia,"

"That's a lie and you know it. The amount of times you came to me asking for advice about being in love with someone that isn't your girlfriend," I put my hand over Tommy's head and closed my ears as the family continued to fight.

"I never came to you! And I would never come to you about anything! And at the time, I was with Sophia and wanted to be with Talia! And that was over two years ago. This is about you and giving my cousin drugs when you knew she was sobering up,"

"Because she was pregnant! She had a miscarriage and needed something to release the pain!"

"And drugs were the answer?"

"They were for you, weren't they?"

"Stop! All of you, just stop!" I yelled. Everyone turned to me, even the nurses. "Bria needs us all to be calm for her. To be a family for her. And all of this fighting isn't good for her. And it's not good for anybody else. Especially Adelaide and I," everyone nodded and sat back down as if nothing happened.

"Wanna explain?" Jason asked, sitting next to me.

"Damn doctor put me back on meds. Stress isn't good, it'll only trigger anxiety which will put me back to the place I was before," he sighed and pulled me into him, when I should be the one pulling him into me. Tables turn quickly in this family. Too quickly.

I lowered my head and crossed my hands over Tommy. Please, God, don't take her away from us. Don't punish this family anymore than you have. Make Bria better. Heal her.
