18. Chapter Eighteen

Jason's POV

I watched as Talia sat on her knees on the carpeted floor in the living room with her arms out in front of her and her smile twitching as she tried to get Tom to walk to her.

He stood on his two feet, trying to balance himself out, but with each move he took, he went right down to the ground with a hard thump. But he gets back up every single damn time.

We've sat in the same position for the past two hours just trying to get him to walk to us. No suck luck, though. I think we have a better chance of him saying his first word than walking. If he's anything like me, he won't be walking until he's one and a half. Unless he's speedy Gonzales and starts running around the house in a couple weeks.

"Come on, baby, come to mommy," Talia said for the hundredth time. The same line, over and over again. The same tone of voice. The same room. I love my living room, but now, now I just want it to disappear.

"Babe, he's ten months, give him a little time."

"He isn't giving up, Jase. Don't you see it? He wants to walk. And he can do it. Come on, baby."

"Talia, it's twelve, he needs to eat and then take a nap. It's time to give it a rest today."

She lowered her head before standing up, "you're right. I'll go make his bottle."

I picked up Tom from the carpet and just looked at him, while he looked at me. "You're driving your mother crazy. That's my boy." He let out a big smile before putting his head on my shoulder and his hand on the collar of my shirt.

"Do you want to feed him? Or should I do it, again."

I turned to Talia as she walked to me with the bottle in her hands, "I'll feed him. Why don't you go lie down? I'm here now so you can just relax." Talia nodded and started for the stairs but stopped on the top step.

"I'm glad you're here, Jason. And I'm glad you're stepping up. It means a lot." I smiled at her, not really knowing what to say. Seriously, how am I supposed to respond to that? "I love you."

"I love you." I smiled at her before looking down to the baby, past out on my shoulder. I smiled at him, finally seeing it. He sleeps exactly like me. Mouth wide open, arms sprawled out but yet, sleeps like a rock.

"I heard you were back! Bring it in, man!" I turned around quickly, keeping both my hands on Tom's back.

"Hey, how've you been?" I smiled, shaking hands with Nick.

"Not bad, how about you? I haven't talked to you in forever."

"I'm good, great, actually. You know, it's hard finding time, especially with football, but it's good. How's the new job?"

"My job is great. It's making me money, enough money to actually get my own place."

"No way! You're on your own now?"

"You know it. It's not in the best part of town, but it's a place to live. And the girl who lives next to me. Gorgeous. Too bad she's dating some gang member."

"Don't go near that."

"Nah, I got another girl."

"No way, who?"

"Soph." My eyes widened in shock. When Nick and Sophia get together, all hell breaks loose. Secrets are shared, blood is shed, hearts are broken. And unfortunately, we all found that out the hard way.

"I know it sounds crazy but it's not like before. I wanted a relationship and sure enough, so did Soph."

"But what about Christina?"

"She moved away to California for school and didn't want to deal with a distance relationship and she didn't want to deal with me being here without her so she broke it off. Didn't phase me, though. We're still friends."

"But enough about me, what about you?"

"Nothing's really been going on. Talia and I are still together. Tom is getting older. Jackson made his move on Talia. Besides that, absolutely nothing."

"Jack made a move? Damn, I knew he liked her but I didn't actually think he would do something about it."

"I can hear you all the way upstairs. I can't imagine what Tommy could hear." Talia said, coming back down the steps with her hair in a pony tail on the side, her hair just reaching below her shoulder.

"Hey, Talia."

She smiled, "it's been so long since I've seen you. How've you been?"

"Good? How about you?"

"I've been great, thanks. But I hate to cut this party short but, unfortunately, we have a sleeping baby in your arms, who needs to stay asleep for now. So, if you'd hand him over to me-"

"I'll put him down."

"I'll come with."

I walked up the five steps that lead to Tom's bedroom. Luckily, his room is big enough to have a playpen and a crib. One for naps and the other for sleep.

When we first got the playpen, Talia was on this rant about how a baby shouldn't nap in it's crib because then they won't sleep as well the same night. Apparently, her mom had her sleeping in her crib as a baby and that didn't turn out well, because every night she wouldn't sleep until her mom got a playpen for her to sleep in.

"He's gotten nice," Talia said as I laid Tommy down in the playpen.

"He's got a life now."

"No more screwing around?"

"Well, Nick is Nick, but I think for now he's found, someone."

"Good for him. I'm happy for him, really. Did he tell you about Christina?"

"No, what about her?"

"She's a partier now. Amber still talks to her once in awhile and apparently she's been busy with some of the guys in California. Amber said she forgot all about Nick."

Christina was always a partier, but when she needed to be serious, she was. I'm happy for Christina. Whenever around Nick, she would always be serious and hold back what she wanted to do. But now, she doesn't have to. I'm proud of her.

"Hey, sorry to cut this all short but I got a call from work. If I can, I'll stop by tonight or tomorrow." Nick said, walking into the nursery.

"Alright, man. It was good seeing you again. See you soon."

"Bye Nick."

I sat on the floor with Tom, waiting for Talia to come home from the grocery store with dinner for tonight. I told her I really wanted a nice dinner and sure enough, she went out to the store to get fresh, pre-made meals. Best thing ever made. Tom sat a couple feet away from me, shaking one of his toys Aunt Sally gave him, minding his own business. In the background, the football game played smoothly, just loud enough to hear the announcements being called.

"I'm home and I come bearing food! It's still hot, so come on." Talia said, slamming the door behind her. Both Tom and I jumped from the loudness of the door, not expecting it.

He looked up from his toy, then looked to me. "You heard your mother. Come on." I reached down to pick him up but his small hands pushed mine away as if he was an adult already.

His little legs pushed up, making him stand up against the couch. He put his right foot out in front of him, then the left and repeated.

"Jase, I'm getting dinner ready."

"Come here, now!" Talia grumbled a little, probably something about how she just needs to get dinner on the plates but she came to the living room.

"Is he..."

"He's walking."

"He's walking! My baby is walking!" He must've been practicing because he knew how to do it, it was just a matter of holding himself up. Talia sat a couple feet away from him, holding her arms out and waiting for him to walk to her.

I stopped the video on my phone once he got to Talia's arms. "You did it!" Talia smiled, hugging Tom close to her body.

Pressing on Instagram, the video went straight up, no questions about it. I didn't even think twice.

Summers11: Little man's first steps today. So exciting. Let's just say we're both happy we were home for his first steps. Now we just need to teach him about football @Grey_11 #MakeDaddyProud #FirstSteps

So, Tommy took his first steps! And Nick came back into play and so did a little of Christina. Next chapter is gonna be a good one.... who's ready for some Jackson drama? Maybe a little scene with Poppy, Abi and Joely? No promises yet! Comment what you think so far!
