13. Chapter 13

Hermione’ heart pounded, her chest heaved, her eyes brimmed with tears. She chewed on her bottom lip, praying she wouldn’t start sobbing right there in the corridor. Theo. I have to find Theo. She thought. She split into a run, the tears finally escaping as she looked for Theo. Lucky for her, that’s exactly who she ran into up near the Astronomy Tower.

“Theo!” She exclaimed before collapsing onto him, crying into his shirt. Hermione clung to his sleeves sobbing, Theo stiffened for a moment before hugging the crying girl. He peeled Hermione off of him and gripped her shoulders tightly.

“Hermione? What’s wrong? What happened?” Theo asked. Hermione’s eyes were closed to try and stop the tears, she shook softly in his grip.

“I saw him,” was all she said. Theo’ eyebrows creased deeply in confusion.

“Hermione? Saw who?” Theo pressed.

“Draco,” she said through a large sob. Theo tugged the girl back into him and wrapped his arms around her, engulfing her in his warmth. Theo slowly started walked backwards towards the staircase that lead up to the top of the tower.

“Come on Hermione. Let’s go sit,” Hermione blankly nodded, tears still falling freely, and followed Theo up the stairs. Once they reached the top if the stairs in stood in the little rotunda Theo pulled out two sickles and transfigured them into a blanket and pillows. He tugged Hermione down onto the blanket.

“What happened?” Theo asked her. Hermione had stopped cry and was now looking down at her lap and wringing her hands.

“When he hurt me yesterday, I dropped my wand. I didn’t realise till just a bit ago that I didn’t have it so I went to go get it and there he was. In the alcove, curled up in a ball in the dark, crying. I was going to leave but he called out to me, said he needed to apologize. I told him he didn’t need to because I heard what he said to you last night,”

“You heard that?” Theo asked her. She nodded before continuing.

“I didn’t know what else to say so, I asked for the bracelet back,” She was now twisting the bracelet around her wrist nervously. “And he gave it back. He put it on me. Just like he did when he first gave it to me. I’ve never seen him look so vulnerable. What have I done?” Theo scowled.

“You didn’t do anything. He hurt you,” Hermione scoffed.

“That’s not true at all. I lied to him for years. I told him I loved him and the whole time I was lying to him about my whole life! No wonder he hated me so much.”

“I think you underestimate just how much this hurt him Hermione. It wasn’t just you who got their heart broken that day. After he came back to the common room he was a shaking, crying, sniveling mess.He didn’t care that was saw him crying. He wouldn’t move. He just sat, in a ball on his bed, crying. He was like that for hours. The next morning, his eyes were so bloodshot they looked like they were bleeding. I think once the shock of it all wore away, anger took it’s place. He locked himself in his room for hours. When everyone started worrying that he had gone and killed himself I went in to check on him. He was sitting in the middle of a pile of rubble that used to be his bathroom door, crying. His whole room was trashed. He’d broken vases and and cups, anything that would shatter. His books had been burned, his bed was broken right down the middle. The curtains and bedding were torn to shreds. His fists were red and bleeding from punching the walls. The only thing he didn't break was that picture. You know, the one of the two of you at the Yule Ball in fourth year. He still has it on his bedside table actually. He won’t let anyone touch it.” Hermione was crying again. She was rigid with shock.

“That’s the day things with Astoria started. I finally managed to get him out of his room and into the common room. I had to bribe him with alcohol but, whatever works right?” Theo said sullenly. “We were sitting in the common room, I was trying to convince him to see reason and just go talk to you when Tori walked past. Everyone knew she had a crush on him, everyone, even him. She walked past and smiled at him. Being the bint she is she had no idea what happened and was just being a slut. I don’t know what he was thinking, he just got up and followed her. He grabbed her hand and pulled her into his room and locked the door behind them. I was the only one who knew about it.”

“I knew about,” Hermione whispered. Theo nodded.

“I would expect you to. He did it partially to get to you,”

“Yeah. I found out a few days after the fight. He sent me a note,I thought it was from Pansy though. Asking me to meet in the alcove after class. So I did. I walked in on the two of them snogging. Once he noticed I was there he just smirked at me, winked at me and left with her. I cried for hours after that,”

“I remember that day, I found him later that night drunk off his ass and crying again. He told me what he did. I was pissed at him. But then in the morning he didn’t remember a thing. Anyways, I think things ended because Daphne found out. When she found out she was livid. She yelled at them both till her voice was hoarse,” Hermione smiled sadly. Theo hugged her again and kissed her forehead. “We should go to dinner,” he said quietly, “it’s getting late.” He helped Hermione to her feet and lead her away from tower. Once they arrived in the Great Hall, Hermione was bombarded with hugs from Pansy, Millie, Daphne, and Tracy. They fussed over her.

“Oh thank God you’re okay!” Tracy said to her after hugging her tightly.

“I got him back ‘Mione. Don’t worry.” Pansy said fiercely. Hermione laughed softly.

“Theo told me what you did to him. You didn’t get in trouble?” Pansy grinned.

“Oh I got in trouble. I’ve got detention every Saturday till I graduate,” she said with a wink.

“I’d think so,” Hermione said teasing, “Theo said no one tried to stop you?” Pansy nodded.

“I think people figured that he did something, and that he probably deserved it. Which he did. Foul bastard,” she said darkly. Tracy grabbed Hermione’s hand and pulled her towards the Slytherin table. Only after Hermione was sitting and had a plate full of food in front of her did everyone else sit and start eating. Hermione rolled her eyes as she swallowed a spoonful of soup.

“Guys, stop. I’m fine. No need to baby me,” everyone grimaced.

“I know we shouldn’t be we can’t really help it.I mean, you almost died,” Daphne said solemnly.

When he heard someone pull back the tapestry Draco was really to yell at the offender and send them running, but his voice froze in his throat when Hermione emerged from behind the tapestry. She froze too. Stared at him with fear and sadness in her eyes. When she turned to go Draco couldn’t help himself and called out to her. She stood still and stiff for a moment before turning back to face him.

“I have to apologize,” he had said. She had shaken her head sadly, her curls swishing around her beautiful face.

“You don’t have to. I heard what you said to Theo last night,” Draco paled and swallowed hard. She had heard what he said? She heard him say that he still loved her? Nerves flooded into his system. “You heard that?” He said nervously. Hermione nodded. Draco dragged his hands over his tearstained face and moaned softly. Draco took a deep breath before letting all his pride fly out the window and apologized.

“God Hermione, I’m sorry. I don’t know what I was thinking. You could’ve died. I don’t know what I would have done if you’d died.” The sob that broke through his lips hurt his heart. Terror, guilt, and sadness riddled his body as he sobbed, begging for her forgiveness. “Please forgive me.” His head was in his hands again and he was trying to hide his tears, when she said something he never expected to hear.

“Can I have it back?” She asked. Draco looked up from his place in his hands shock etched on his face. The bracelet. She was talking about the bracelet.

“You want it back?” He asked her softly through his sobs. Hermione nodded again. Draco shoved a hand in his pocket and fished out the sparkling bracelet. Hermione was over in the other corner picking up what looked to be her wand.

“Hermione,” Draco said tentatively, holding out the bracelet to her. She shook her head, and just for a moment Draco thought she had changed her mind but his thought changed when he heard her.

“Will you put it on me?” The blood in his face drained. He remembered when he had given her that bracelet back in third year. She had asked him the same question, only then she was smiling and glowing with happiness. Now she was biting her lip, obviously trying not to cry. Draco did the only thing he knew he should do. He nodded silently before unhooking the bracelet and draping it over the wrist and clasping it closed. She looked him right in the eyes. Chocolate, meeting silver. Her eyes brimmed with tears and her whole body shook slightly.

“I’m still mad at you, you know,” she had said quietly. He knew he deserved it. He deserved her anger. She had lied to him, but what he had done in retaliation was so much worse. He nodded absentmindedly before letting go of her wrist and watching her disappear behind the tapestry. Draco wasn't able to hold it in any longer. He crumpled to the ground, tears flowing down his cheeks. His tears fell to the cold hard floor like crystal rain. He stayed that way for a long time just crying to himself and praying that she would forgive him for what he had done. That everyone would forgive him, not just Hermione. But Theo, Pansy, Blaise, and Daphne. All the people he had hurt.
