More people started showing up around ten o’clock. I’d been there long enough. I was tired. But Connor was planning to stay until one.
I was still sitting on the lawn chair. My legs were crisscrossed and I was starting to fall asleep. Soon enough, my eyes were closed completely and the sounds of the party were beginning to fade.
I was almost completely asleep until I heard someone laughing near me. I opened my eyes to see the brunette Barbie, two girls, and a group of guys standing close to me.
The boys began to pull me out of the chair. “Come on. Have some fun! Live a little.” they said every few seconds. Being half asleep I didn’t put up a real fight until they had picked me up, and had me by the pool. I realized that they were planning to throw me in. I began to panic. “Don’t! Please, put me down! Please!” but they didn’t listen.
At the last moment I could hear Connor off in the distance. “Hey! She can’t-” then I couldn’t hear anything. I was going to drown. I finally felt the bottom of the pool and tried to kick myself to the surface, but I had breathed in too much water and didn’t have the strength.
I blacked out.
When I came to, I coughed out water and ached all over. Luke, Eric, and a few others I didn’t recognize surrounded me, constantly asking questions. I sat up quickly, making myself dizzy in the process. I searched for Connor. When I found him, he and his friends were beating up the kids that threw me in.
“Hey. Hey. Are you okay?” I searched for the distorted voice. It was Luke’s. Was I okay? Does it look like I’m okay? I finally realized what he was asking.
Wait. Did I drown? What happened? Why was I thrown in? I hate water. I hate it. I hate it. I HATE IT!
I felt uncontrolled tears run down my face. “What happened?” My voice sounded so hoarse that it scared me. Eric backed away looking relieved that I was alive. The few others also backed away and began to go back towards the house talking about it.
Luke stayed kneeling on the ground next to me, staring at me. He looked so worried. He doesn’t even know me and he’s worried. I began to cry harder. Luke came back to life and pulled me into a hug. “It’s okay. You’re okay.” I gently pushed at him, making him let go. “Don’t t-touch me!” I yelled at him. I got up and tried to walk, and fell a few times. Luke tried to catch me but I wouldn’t let him. I finally made my way to the door. “Connor!” My voice cracked. “Do what you want! I’m going home!” I walked inside and weaved my way through people. I finally made it out and began to walk home. Halfway there, Connor spotted me from his car and drove me home.
“Thank God for the weekend. I am going home, and sleeping!” I laughed.
Connor smiled at me. “You okay?”
“I hate water.” I replied sleepily. “I know, sis. I know.”
“When will we be home?”
“It’s a few more minutes, Sam.”
“Hey, Connor,” I began
“Yes? What is it?”
“Do you know Luke Ryder?”
“Yeah. The guy from your class?”
“Yes. What do you think about him?”
“I don’t know. I remember you saying he was a douchebag, but that was a month ago. And he seems to like you.”
“Why do you ask?”
“Because I think I might like him, but I don’t know. I’m too tired to think.”
“Okay. Well, we’re almost home. You can think more later.”
