9. Chapter 9

‘S.Ryans

Born: 7th October 1961

Dates of service: 12th October 1986 -> 3rd May 1996

Security Clearance Level: 3

Role: Personal Assistant

Cause for end of service: Resignation

Current Location: Haskell Rd, California'

I have to admit, it does all seem to fit. If my father was Xander’s personal assistant then that would explain why he was with him on the trip to New London all those years ago. Plus, I was born on the 29th of April 1991, so him resigning four days after my fifth birthday makes sense. Anyway, we’re in Nevada, so the journey to California wouldn’t exactly be difficult...it’s definitely worth a shot.

“What do you think?” Annabeth asks me.

“I think...that this might actually be him.” I murmur, shaking my head. I still can’t quite believe it, what if this is him? Then again, what if it isn’t? What if we go to California and it’s just a dead end?

“Well then, let’s gather our things and head to California.” Annabeth decides, unaware of my doubts. I feel Daniel’s hand on my back as we head over to our little corner, gathering the few things we have.

I kneel down beside my mattress, picking up and folding my other two tops, and my spare pair of trousers. I add a book to the pile, it’s old and in tatters. The spine is bent, the pages are curled up from being left out in the rain and getting wet, the text is blurry, and the top layer of the cover is completely worn away. I found it in the street one day and brought it back to entertain myself with, although it takes about three minutes to make out half a page. Anyway- it keeps me busy and makes the days pass by faster, and I think I might want to keep it with me just in case things don’t work out and we have to settle down in a place like this again. I use an old piece of cloth to gather the dust into piles, cleaning up after myself for some reason. I work slowly and carefully, being precise in my movements. I sweep it all up until it’s cleaner than when I arrived, and then I stand up, stepping back to stare at my home for the past month or so. I look to my right, and see Daniel is finished too. Unlike me his area is still an untidy mess, but he has gathered the few things he has. Unable to help myself, I bend over and swiftly dust around his mattress. I can hear him chuckling behind me- I can almost feel his smile on my back. I know it’s silly, but I like everything neat and tidy, and I don’t think that is ever going to change. Tidy house, tidy mind. Daniel kneels down beside me.

“You know sometimes you’re just so-”

“Hey...guys, you should come and see this.” Max cuts Daniel off, yelling out. He left half an hour ago to get some more supplies, but apparently, he’s now back. Me and Daniel walk over, hand in hand. As we get closer I notice what Max is looking at, a newspaper. Annabeth joins him and reads over his shoulder, her expression unreadable. Once they both step back I finally get a look at what’s stunned them both into silence.

NEW EVIDENCE FOUND REVEALING XANDER MOORE’S KIDNAPPERS

LAST NIGHT NEW CCTV FOOTAGE WAS FOUND SHOWING FOUR POSSIBLE SUSPECTS AT THE HOTEL WHERE MR MOORE WAS TAKEN. FORENSICS INVESTIGATED AND FOUND EX-POLICE OFFICER DANIEL JACKSON’S FINGERPRINTS AT THE SCENE OF THE CRIME. HIS ACCOMPLICES ARE BELIEVED TO BE KNOWN-REBELS ANNABETH JACKSON AND MAX HILLS, AS WELL AS MR MOORE’S SUPPOSED BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTER AND SOUTHERN TRESPASSER, ELIA WATSON-SMITH.

Below the article is a snapshot from the footage with all four of us walking away from the hotel (after Luci had gone back inside to ‘get back the gun’) with the caption ‘if you see these people contact the authorities’ written in bold underneath it.

It’s almost funny to read the opening paragraph, the authorities really don’t realise how wrong they are. For starters, we’re not his kidnappers, Luci is...and, on a similar note, I’m not his biological daughter, that title belongs to Luci too. But, on a more serious side, this article is trouble. Until now the public haven’t been involved in our chase, now they are, we’ll need to be extra careful.

“How did they even get ahold of that footage? We erased it to cover our tracks.” Annabeth sighs, probably contemplating banging her head against the wall. I know how she feels, this is the one thing we didn’t need right now. How will we travel to California undetected now?

“Wait a second...how did they get that footage?” Max suspiciously continues Annabeth’s trail of thought, “Someone must have retrieved it and released it.”

“Someone good with computers…” Daniel trails off.

“Someone who knew we were there that day…” Annabeth continues.

“And someone who doesn’t want me to go after my biological father…” I realise at the same time everyone else does, “Luci.”

“Luci did this,” Max agrees, “She must have found out that Elia was still looking for her dad and decided to take matters into her own hands.”

“So she made us all fugitives just to stop me from meeting him?” I step back, “That’s-that’s…” I don’t know how to finish my sentence.

“That’s crazy,” Daniel finishes it for me, “Just like she is.”

“If we’re all fugitives now then how on earth are we going to reach California without getting ourselves arrested? All it takes is one person to look at us and we’re done for. I mean, this was front-page news in all the papers.” Max bangs his fist on the table in frustration. A short silence fills the room as we all try to think up some ideas.

“Maybe we don’t need to leave this shed...maybe we can get somebody to come to us instead?” Annabeth begins to hatch a plan.

“My dad doesn’t even know I’m looking for him, how would we-”

“I’m not talking about your dad Elia.” Annabeth interrupts me, “Max, give me your emergency phone.”

“Why?” Max asks, but he does hand it over.

“Because I think there’s one person who might just help us…” Annabeth reveals, biting her lip whilst she sends ‘SOS’ to one of the unnamed contacts. Max leans over her shoulder to read the number, and groans as he recognises the digits. “Sorry Max but she’s our last hope.” Annabeth decides, flipping the phone shut and putting it away. She looks over at a clueless Daniel and I, and says,

“We need to turn to Beverly.”
