I left the office around 3pm. I was sat on the stairs outside of the station rubbing my feet. My black shoes placed neatly at my side along with my handbag. What a day! Running here and there, making coffee for the cops, poking Martha every couple of minutes to ask her what I was doing. This was hard work. I am sure I know every criminal in the city after today. I wiped my brow and sighed. Well another day another dollar. Maybe I can buy myself a nice steak at the end of the week. Oh and a couple of dresses. I stood up and slipped my feet back in to my shoes and proceeded to pick up my handbag. I continued down the stairs and followed the same path I took home . I stopped at one of the open stalls and began looking at all the fresh produce that was laid out neatly. Oh those tomatoes would make a great soup. I fished in my handbag for my purse and smiled at the lady who was stood next the stall. Green apron and long brown hair.
"Can I help you" She said sweetly.
"Yes Ill take a few of the tomatoes" I said. I pulled out my purse to collect some money and before I knew it someone snatched my purse from my hand. What the hell! I turned to see a man all dressed in black legging it down the road through the hustle and bustle of the people.
"Hey! Stop! Thief!" I shouted .I quickly started to run after him. What on earth am I thinking there was no way I will be able to catch up to him, I wasn't far behind with the clicking of my heels on the sidewalk. What a site I was.I caught a glimpse of him running down a dark alley way and jumping over a wired fence.
"Wait ! Stop!" I shouted. But he was gone. I huffed and puffed out of breath and bent forward putting my hands on my knees and breathing heavily. I am so unfit!. Everything was in there. My I'D, bank cards, money, everything. I stood up and pushed my hair out of my face. I felt my eyes began to well up with tears. I wasn't sad. I was angry. Some little good for nothing thief just stole my purse with all its contents. Not like there was that much money in there anyway! Good. All he can afford is a small hot dog out of the money. My cards I will have to cancel and my I'D? Ha! Good job trying to look like me. Nobody is going to believe that that girl is you!. I began to storm out of the ally way. I wiped my eyes and looked around. It was such a common occurrence that nobody in the street had come over to ask if I was ok. They all carried on with their daily lives as if I was invisible. As I turned the corner to walk down the road I saw a small club with a blue umbrella sign outside. It looked dark and quiet. I opened my hand which still had money in it from when I was about to pay the lady. It wast much but beer surely cant be that expensive?.
I walked over to the club and opened the door and my jaw hit the floor. It was exquisite. There were chandeliers hanging from the ceilings , the diamonds sparking under the light. A big wooden bar with well dressed waiters and waitresses and a stage with the same umbrella sign that was outside the club. There is no way I can afford a drink here. This place is spectacular. It looks the sort of place that would charge dozens for a glass of water. I looked around. It seemed quiet anyway. They wont know I came in . As I turned around I bumped in to a very large man wearing a suit.
"I am sorry sir I'm just leaving!" I said trying not to make eye contact. My eyes still red and my temper rising.
"Don't be silly have a seat Miss" he said. I looked up and he smiled at me.
"I don't take orders from strangers" I said trying to manoeuvre past him. He put his arm out to stop me.
"Names Butch. There, we aren't strangers anymore. Come sit yourself down and we will get you a drink" . There was no way I was getting out of this, I turned around, sighed and walked over to the bar. This goon wanted me to buy a drink and I had no money because some idiot stole my purse!. I sat down on the stool at the bar and smiled at the waiter through gritted teeth. "Butch" I am presuming was stood next to me. I turned to him
"Look , Sir, Butch, whatever they call you. Let me be straight with you, I haven't got any-_"
"I know." He said quickly with a smile. I frowned.
"I know you haven't. Just watched you on the CCTV running like a crazy woman down the alley. Was great entertainment. And took balls to run after someone who could be carrying a weapon" He said. My eyes widened.
"Thanks for your help!" I said sarcastically. This idiot just watched me running like a lunatic and didn't bother helping me. Thanks a bunch!
"Ah its alright" He placed a hand on my shoulder. I shut my eyes and sighed quietly in a temper.
"Now whats your poison. Its on the house. " He leaned in towards my ear and whispered.
"Just don't tell the boss". I turned to face him as he lifted his head and looked across the room. I followed his eyes to where he was looking . HIM! That man. The penguin man.King of Gotham!.
There he was. Sat at a small table at the front of the stage looking over at us, smiling, that same smile he had the day I seen him with the newspaper. Dressed in a suit with his tie done perfectly. He picked up his wine glass and raised it, then took a sip.
I think I have just landed myself In the King of Gothams club. I hope to god they don't kill me for any unknown reason. I just smiled back weakly and turned towards the bar.
"Amaretto please. And make it strong"
