You're almost through another day. I told myself as I entered the teen center, the only home I felt I had. Dropping my things, I braced myself as I entered the room. I knew there'd be screams of excitement as I entered, but for once I wasn't so excited about that fact. The screams pierced my ears as I entered the room.
"Hey, Amanda!" One of my friends yelled.
"What's up, girl?!" Another called.
"I've been waiting for you!" Exclaimed the third.
I layered on my fake excitement and greeted them all as they directed me to the couch where the group was sitting. As soon as I sat down, I was greeted by whispers from other girls catching me up on the latest gossip. As they talked I forced myself to smile and laugh at all the appropriate times, yet still felt nothing. I rarely did.
Suddenly, so suddenly that I almost didn't notice, the conversation died down as a door slammed shut. "Who's that?" I wondered.
All the normal attendants were already there and Teen Night had already started. Before I could come up with anything two people walked in, looking slightly nervous, but covering it surprisingly well. A boy with jet black hair and cold blue eyes, that could only remind me of winter gazed in my direction, before looking to what I could only assume was his brother. That was odd. I turned to look at his brother, and was surprised to see him looking back. He stared at me for a while, and I felt my cheeks redden. It was as if his chocolatey brown eyes were staring deep into my soul, and I began feeling something I couldn't describe inside. Ducking my head I looked away, cursing myself. I must of looked like a fool I thought. Yet, I couldn't shake the longing to feel that warmth again.
"Well, hello there," said the pastor, breaking the awkward silence. I felt the boy's eyes shift off her. He cleared his throat.
"Hello, sir." He held out is hand for a shake, and then continued. "I'm Zack, and this is my brother Nathan. We've just moved here from Montana."
"Well, welcome to Maine," Reverend John continued. "May I ask what brings you here?"
Nathan piped up, "Our family has been searching for a teen group for us to attend and we've heard this is the best one around."
"In that case, please make yourself at home. Here, let me introduce you to a few people." With that John directed them to the other side of the room where some of the guys were playing pool, out of my earshot.
"O-M-G, they're so cute!!!" Rosa whispered to the group. The rest agreed and began talking about them. But I just stared at Zack from underneath my hair. His name kept running through my mind, like a summer breeze through my hair. I hadn't felt like this in months. I had barely felt anything for months.
"Um, Amanda?" I was jolted from my gaze.
"What are you staring at?"
"Oh, nothing." I dropped my gaze quickly, hoping they didn't notice, but it was too late.
"Ohhhhhhhh! Amanda has a crush!!!" Exclaimed Julia.
"Which one is it? Whispered Marta.
"Yeah! Zack or Nathan?" Said Amelia, a little too loudly. The room began to spin, and I felt sick.
"Neither!" I barked, jumping off the couch. I would admit to nothing, I thought as I ran from the room.
