I saw the Incubus sitting in my driveway; I opened the passenger’s side door and sat in the toasty warm vehicle. Justin smelled lightly of cologne, the scent fit him very well, “Hey Amy.” He said as he backed out of my drive way. “Hi Justin.” I said, buckling myself in. We drove down the street and turned, headed to the North side of town, “Where are we going?” I asked him. He smiled at me, “A restaurant that my landlord said was amazing.” He looked at me then quickly back to road, “Lake House grill?” I asked, he nodded, “It is really good, you will like it.” I told him. We sat in silence for a mile or so, then Justin asked me a question I had planned on avoiding, without Lily around to talk for me, I felt lost. “Can you tell me anymore about the day the second boy kissed you?” he said as we drove down the dimly lit street. “Not much to tell,” I began. “It was a dare, he was the one boy who didn’t believe that I was a demon, some of his friends dared him to prove it, he did, and he proved that all the rumors were true. I felt the pain he felt, I felt what it was like to die.” I’m spilling my heart out; I haven’t talked this much in years. He isn’t scared; he is still looking at me with desire in his eyes. Justin smiled and wiped a tear off my cheek, I didn’t even realize I was crying, I was mostly numb to this topic.
We pulled into the driveway of a large white farm house, it had been for sale for a few months now, but recently the ‘for sale’ sign had been taken down, thin must be Justin’s house.
“I have to grab your birthday present.” He said “Come on in.” he smiled, gesturing toward the front door. We stepped into the Victorian style home, the floor was dark oak planks, the wall was cream colored and the vibe was inviting. “Sit down on the couch, make yourself comfortable, I’m going to grab your present.” He ran up the stairs and I sat on the red velvet love seat. “Hey?” A confused voice came from behind me. I turned my head and found Erik, in all his glory, towering behind me. His dirty blond hair was dripping wet, he was drying it with a towel, and another white towel was wrapped around his waist. I turned away quickly. “I’m sorry!” I squeaked. “Justin is upstairs, I’m here with him.” I covered my eyes.
“Am I that repulsive?” he chuckled “C’mon Amy, you act like you have never seen a guy with no shirt on.” I turned around. “I’m sorry.” I muttered. “How do you know my name?” I asked. He smiled, the same smirk that his brother had, the same smirk that I wanted to slap off of the both of them. “I always remember the names of my little brother’s girlfriends.” He said stepping closer. “I am not his girlfriend.” I stated. He raised his eyebrows. “Could’ve fooled me, I’m sorry, he has been staring at you like you are perfection. He told me you guys were going on a date tonight.” I blushed; he smirked as if he had won a nonexistent argument. I crossed my arms, “As a matter of fact, we are.” He smiled “Then you are his girlfriend.” He looked at me, just then Justin came down stairs. “Hey Erik, can you put my phone on your charger? I lost mine.” He then noticed Erik’s indecency. “We have a guest, put some clothes on.” Erik smiled stood up and pulled the towel covering his waist off and threw it at Justin. I was about to cover my eyes when I noticed Erik was wearing boxers, navy blue and black briefs that hugged his butt and pretty much gave the shape of his entire front; I hid my eyes. “This is house my rules little bro.” Eriks voice said. I heard footsteps walk out of the room so I uncovered my eyes. Justin was looking at me, Erik was gone. “You ready to eat?” he smiled. We arrived at Lake House Grill and found a seat. We ordered our food and Justin handed me a neatly wrapped box with a pretty blue bow. I un-wrapped it and in it was an old envelope, aged and torn, yellowed, and stained. I looked in the envelope, a letter was written, and the date was 1804, it read;
I haven’t written to you since I was 10, but 7 years isn’t so long. I wanted to inform you that I will be married next spring, to Charles Cooper the 2nd, he is a fine man, only 20 years of age, and he asked my mother for my hand in marriage, she said yes. I’m scared… I don’t want to hurt him like I hurt the others. Mother said that won’t happen, that Charles is like me, but I still fear for him. My kiss didn’t drain him, like the others, the green mist came out, but blue mist came out of him, he is like me. I know this is crazy, I know how it sounds, Why was I cursed this way?
I looked at Justin. He smiled at me, “Its what got me interested in succubus, I found it in and old house my family moved to when I was younger.” I nodded.
“Amy?” My mother’s voice asked. I looked up from the letter and standing there was my mother, father, and Peri. They had come here for dinner tonight, I had forgotten.
“Who is this?” she asked, looking at Justin. My stomach dropped, “This is Justin, and he is my boy-f...” I stopped myself. “Boy-friend.” Justin finished my sentence. My father sighed and my brother laughed, my mom however did not speak, which worried me, I could see the anger fill her face like a wave crashing against a boat, hard, and fast.
“Home, Now.” She said as she walked toward the door. The rest of the night I got to hear about how dangerous dating was. How I wasn’t allowed to see Justin again for my own good, how I was to come home immediately after school. It was tough, I spent Sunday sulking in my room, texting Justin the details of the argument, and he apologized and said we would figure this out. Every time I tried to eat food it would come right back up. I couldn’t hold anything down. If I told my mom this she would immediately think I was pregnant or something. My mother was maybe 5’6, very small, but she still scared me. I tried to eat pancakes, no luck, sushi, nope, Chinese food, (My favorite) I still blew chunks. I was so hungry, but food was toxic to me. I received several other texts from lily asking how my date went, I told her about the disaster. I also got a text from an unknown number, it read;
-Hey, this is Erik, I got your number from my brothers phone. He has your contact name as “Amy <3”. Are you guys a couple?
I ignored the text; I could just say I hadn’t read it yet. The next morning Lily picked me up for school as usual.
“you didn’t give me too much detail on your date.” Lily said smiling at me. “Nothing happened, Justin is still alive isn’t he?” which was a rhetorical question. We walked into the school building and down the hallway to our lockers.
“Well you guys were practically undressing each other with your eyes.” She smiled at me. “We like each other a lot, and we are going to try dating.” Lily’s eyes lit up.
“Who are you dating?” Stevie asked as he walked up to us. “None of your business.” Lily teased as she gently kissed him on the lips. I envied her so much.
I walked to Math and to my surprise we actually learned something, I chugged through English, health, and history, finally making it to lunch. The cafeteria was filled with people in cheetah print for some spirit assembly, even Lily has a cheetah print head band on because she was on the softball team. Yay for the ChesterVille Cheetahs.
