When it seemed like forever, I finally managed to calm down. Harry is still holding me in his arms, hugging me tight and I don’t want to let go but I know I have to sooner or later. We’ve been standing here in the middle of his front hallway together in silence for more than a few minutes and I just wish I could stay in his arms forever. His hugs never fail to make me feel better, no matter what is going on, his warm comforting hugs always calm me down. My legs are still hurting and my chest is still burning from when I was running over here so I can get away from my uncle but I’m ignoring the pain. Usually I can never do that when I’m in pain but I’m managing to do that right now. I guess it’s because of how Harry is hugging me and it’s distracting me from it. After standing here for a while longer, I finally managed to let go of him. We stare at each other for a few seconds and then he sighs before pushing back a piece of my hair behind my ear.
“Do you want some water?” he asked.
“N-No, I’m fine,” I said groggily.
I nod. Even though I ran a few miles but I’m actually not thirsty. Harry seems to believe me and then he softly kisses my forehead before taking my hand and leading me upstairs to his room. After he closes the door, he lets me take a shower in his bathroom. I grab my stuff that I needed for my shower and go into his bathroom closing the door and locking it behind me. Since I practically live here, I have a lot of stuff here at Harry’s house like he does at my house.
I have a few extra clothes, pajamas, a hair and toothbrush, and toiletries. Thankfully the bathroom in Harry’s room doesn’t have any windows so I don’t have to worry about my uncle peaking in here and breaking in to kill me. When I finished with my shower, I put on my pink leopard spotted pajama pants and a white V-neck t-shirt and tie my hair up into my messy bun. I walk back into Harry’s bedroom and found him lying on his bed scrolling through his phone.
I set my clothes in my laundry basket in the corner for Anne to wash for me and join him on the bed. He sets his phone down and without hesitating he pulls me into his lap holding me close. This is the second time he’s done that and I have to admit that I really like it. Harry puts his hand on my cheek and lightly runs his thumb along it sending me goosebumps everywhere. He’s the only person that makes me feel safe.
“You okay?” he asked.
“Yeah,” I mumbled.
“Good,” he replied and leans in to kiss my lips softly. “Can you tell me what happened?”
I sigh and put my back against the wall. Obviously, he knows that my uncle chased me but he doesn’t know why though.
“I told my mom that my uncle has been abusing me and he overheard our conversation,” I explained. “Then my mom got a call from the hospital telling her that she needs to work last minute on night shift and she left. She left me alone after I just told her that my uncle has been abusing me. When she left he said he was going to kill me, legitimately kill me, so I ran away by jumping out my window but he ended up chasing me with his car,”
“Alaina…I’m so sorry,” Harry said looking at me sincerely.
“Can I stay here tonight?” I asked him. “I can’t go back to my house because who knows what my uncle would do to me. He could kill me…he could do anything. Just please don’t make me go back home,”
“Do you really think I would send you back after what just happened? Absolutely not,” he replied. “You’re free to stay as long as you want to, Lainey,”
I smile and nuzzle my face into his chest. I have greatest friend in the whole world.
“Where’s your mom?”
“She and Gemma went late night shopping. They should be back soon,” he said.
“It’s 10 PM. Are stores still open?” I frowned with confusion.
“I have no idea to be honest. I’m not a shopaholic,” he shrugged.
I laugh and lay down on the bed. Harry and I stay up in his room for a while talking about random things like we usually do and then we go downstairs to get some food even though it’s 10:30. Anne and Gemma come home while we were eating so we talked to them for a while before going back upstairs to Harry’s room. I turn on the TV and flip through the channels to see if there are any good movies on tonight. Sadly there wasn’t so I turn off the TV and set the remote back down on Harry’s nightstand.
“Thanks for letting me stay tonight,” I said to Harry.
“You don’t need to thank me. You’re always welcome here and I like it when you’re safe. What did you think I was going to do? Make you leave so you could get hurt by your uncle?” he sighed before putting his arm around me.
I sigh. I should be thanking him because he’s letting me stay here but he’s still right. I’ve always been welcome to stay if I needed to. I don’t know how long I’m going to stay here because usually Anne doesn’t let me stay for more than a night. Maybe if I finally tell her what’s really been going on at home maybe she and my mom will let me stay here for a little while until all the drama with my uncle dies down. I’ve been hiding this from her as well so I hope she won’t get upset when I tell her. She’s noticed a few of my bruises before but hasn’t really questioned about them. She would just wonder where they came from and I would lie that I fell or bumped into something, which she believed.
It was weird because she usually she asks a lot of questions when she knows that something is wrong but she never did when she saw my bruises. I wanted to tell her but I was just so scared. I was scared to tell anyone. I don’t regret telling my mom but I just wish I told someone earlier because this probably wouldn’t be happening if I didn’t hold back and hide this. I couldn’t help it though because I was scared. Scared for my life. My uncle really meant that he would kill me if he found out that I told, he never jokes around. When he tells you something he means it.
“I’m sorry that I woke you up,” I said to Harry after a moment of silence.
“It’s okay. I’m glad you came to me,” he smiled.
“I told you that I would come to you if something happened,”
“No you promised you’d call me. You never said you’d come running over here at almost 10 PM,” he exclaimed.
“I know but I didn’t know what else to do,” I sighed.
Harry puts his hand under my chin and lifts my head up so I can look at him. I feel my heart pound against my ribs when I looked into his sparkling green eyes. I always knew that he had beautiful eyes but I’ve never fallen in love with them until now.
“I’m still glad you came though. Who knows what could of happened if you didn’t,” he said.
I smile and he gives me a light kiss on my lips. I wish he knew how much I loved him. Suddenly, we hear a knock at the door and I literally get off of Harry’s lap and move over to the end of his bed, putting my back against the wall.
“Come in,” Harry said.
The door opens and Anne comes walking in before shutting the door behind her. She’s probably in her to ask why I’ve come over at the last minute since I didn’t tell her what was going on.
“Alaina, your mum called asking for you,” she said.
“Oh…I forgot to tell her that I was staying here,”
“She tried calling your house and your cell phone but you never picked up. She was really worried,”
“I bet she was. Did you tell her that I was okay?”
“I did. She also told me what’s been going on so I told her that you can stay here for a while until she figures things out,” she said.
I sigh with relief. Thank god I don’t have to go back to the hellhole.
“Thank you, Anne. Thank you,” I smiled and give her a hug.
“Aww you’re welcome sweetie. If you need anything I’m here,”
“I know,” I said.
She kisses the top of my head and releases me from the hug.
"Alright. Don't stay up late you two. It's a school night," she said.
"We know, Mum," Harry sighed.
She nods and then she tells us goodnight before walking out of the room. Thank god she’s letting me stay for a while. I don’t know what I would do if she made me go back home tomorrow, not knowing what is going on with me. I’m so happy my mom told her. I wish I did but at the same time I’m glad I didn’t because I would have to explain everything and I don’t like talking about it. I sigh and get back in bed with Harry. I lay down on one of his pillows and he covers me up with the warm blankets in his bed before turning off the light and lying down beside me. I’m exhausted. I’m not afraid to fall asleep now because I’m safe here with Harry for a while. Hopefully after this I’ll be safe forever.
“Shit, I forgot my school stuff at my house,” I sighed angrily.
“It’s fine. We’ll stop by there tomorrow on the way,” Harry said.
“Okay,” I replied.
I feel Harry pull me closer to him and then he wraps his arms around me, holding me close making me start to feel safe, secure, and warm in his arms. I never felt like this until now.
“Alaina…you know I’ll always keep you safe, right?” Harry whispered.
“Yeah,” I whispered back.
“Good. If your uncle puts his hands on you again I will beat the shit out of him. I don’t care what happens to me. He deserves to get his ass kicked,”
“Harry you really-“
“I don’t care. You don’t deserve to be going through this…nobody does,” he said.
I don’t say anything after that. I just lean into kiss him lightly and snuggle up in his chest. I love him so much; I wish he knew that, really I do. It hurts that he doesn’t know. There are times when I want to tell him but I would just hold back. I’ve wanted to tell him those words since 8th grade but I never had the courage.
“Alaina, I…” Harry began to say.
“You what?” I asked, feeling my heart pound in chest.
“I…I...- never mind. Let’s just go to sleep,” he said.
I nod and he pulls me closer than he’s ever had before.
“You’re safe with me, Baby. I’ll keep you safe,” he whispered before kissing the top of my head.
I sigh and close my eyes immediately falling into unconsciousness.
