I stood up slowly and looked down at the water below me, I scanned the area for any sign of Gabriel or Zane. Was it really Zane, or was I just imagining it? I inhaled a shaky breath and began to walk back towards the mansion, I had called home. I reached for my phone only to realize it was probably completely shot from the river water. I pulled it out of my back pocket anyway to examine the damage. I pressed the power button and to my surprise my screen lit up. I scrolled down the notification texts from the coven and looked through the missed calls. I pressed the phone icon next to Azrielle's name and waited for her to answer.
"Oh my god Evangeline! Are you okay?" She exclaimed hysterically.
"Yes Azrielle I'm fine. I had to save a girl, Gabe's with her now at the hospital." I explained.
"Evangeline you need to come home, now." I heard the urgency in her voice mixed with a tone of annoyance and anger.
"Okay, I'll be there soon. I'm sorry if I worried you." I apologized sincerely. I heard scoff on the other end before the line clicked and the call ended. I sighed as I waved my hand and vanished from the bridge.
I reappeared on the front stoop of the mansion. I knocked once on the door and it swung open almost knocking me backwards. I regained stability and was intermediately pulled forward into the house and into Eastlyn's arms.
"Oh Evangeline thank goodness you're okay! You had us all so worried, Luc's upstairs, he was so torn up when you vanished, he thought it was his fault." Eastlyn sobbed as she stroked my hair. I began to shiver furiously from my freezing wet clothes. Eastlyn pulled away from me and wiped her eyes.
"Oh dear, you're shaking!" She exclaimed as she grabbed my hand. "come let's draw you a hot bath."
Eastlyn began to lead me to the powder room, but stopped in her tracks as Calyx loomed over her ominously. She dropped my hand and cowered away from his narrowed eyes..
"Calyx, I'm so sorry, please let me..." I was cut short as the palm of Calyx's hand made contact with my cheek and knocked me to the ground. He had never struck me before, he had never struck any of us, ever. I looked up at Calyx from my spot on the marble floor, in fear. His face was expressionless, his eyes hard and dark as he scowled at me.
"Calyx!" I heard Gabriel growl as he stepped out from the shadows. He extended me his hand and pulled me up. I coward behind Gabriel my eyes darting across the room as I tried to control my fear.
"Do not test me Gabriel. I will not apologize for my actions. Evangeline was thoughtless and reckless and could've gotten herself killed as well as the rest of us. She was gone for hours, unaccompanied and especially when she knows that Lucifer's demons have inhabited Paris!" Calyx boomed. Gabe glared at him, but didn't try to retaliate. Gabe was the golden boy, he was an amazing angel, and no matter how much he cared for me or his coven his reputation with the council and Heaven's leaders came first. I on the other hand wasn't as scared of the council. I stepped out from behind Gabriel, clutching my injured wrist as I turned to face Calyx.
"I was not thoughtless nor was I reckless. I had the situation under control. A girl was in danger, I was doing my job and saved her life. I flew above the clouds and kept my wings hidden. They had already phased into my back when I was retrieved from the water. I was not alone for hours. I was alone for maybe five minutes before Gabe showed up. I followed your directions and had a member of the Coven with me. I am not a child Calyx and you are not my father, stop acting, like it! You are the leader of this coven and nothing more than that! You are not God!" I growled, breathing in and out heavily. The entire room had gone silent as the entire coven in disbelief.
"Your mother would be so disappointed in you." Calyx said sullenly before retreating to his quarters. My face fell as the coven just shook their heads and retreated to each of their rooms. I did the same. I dragged myself up the stairs and into my room. I collapsed on the mattress in the middle of the room, covered in black blankets and stared at the writing and symbols on my ceiling and walls. The room began to spin and then the nightmares came.
