He held his hand up, palm facing forward as a sign he meant no harm.
"I saw you run out, I just wanted to make sure you were okay." He whispered as he walked closer to me.
"Why do you care? You don't even know me." I snapped, backing away. This boy seemed mysterious, dangerous even. The exact type of person Calyx and Easi warned me about.
"Did the glass cut you? Here let me see." He said softly. He leaned down and his fingers brushed my wrist. I winced as I inhaled sharply and pulled away.
"Your wrist. Did you hurt it this morning in the parking lot?" He asked, a hint of concern in his tone as he gently pulled my wrist back towards him and began to examine it.
"I'm Evangeline by the way. Evangeline Devereaux." I smiled slightly as he brought his eyes to mine.
"That's a beautiful name, Evangeline." He smiled.
"And you? What's your name?" I asked quietly as he brought his eyes level with mine.
"Zane. Zane Delecroix." He breathed, his face was inches from mine. His eyes were so beautiful, they were so piercing. I felt his gaze penetrate my soul. It was cold and so captivating, it sent chills up and down my spine. The silence was deafening. He kneeled down and picked up my bow and handed it to me.
"I'm terribly sorry Evangeline, I interrupted your playing, it's almost heavenly."
I inhaled sharply, was he on to me? On to what I was? My thoughts shattered as my phone rang. I looked down at the name flashing across my screen, it was Luc. I groaned and rolled my eyes as I answered my phone.
"What Luc? I'm kind of in the middle of something." I growled, flashing a quick smile at Zane before returning back to Luc's phone call.
"Look Evangeline. We have an issue. Calyx needs you home now." I could hear the seriousness in his voice, Luc was never serious, this must be urgent.
"Okay I'll be there soon." I breathed as the call ended and the phone line went dead. I stood up suddenly and pushed my way past Zane as I picked up my bag off of the floor.
"I'm sorry. I have to go I have a family emergency." I said quickly.
"Let me take you home, you're in no shape to be driving." He said rushing to my side.
"No! I mean no thank you. I'll be fine, thanks for the offer though. I'll see you tomorrow Zane." I exclaimed as I ran out the door.
I ran through the door and stopped suddenly when I saw the entire Coven standing in the foyer staring at me. Luc had Christianna in his arms and Azrielle was holding Dabria on her hip and Gabriel, my real brother, was standing beside Esai cooly and in between Esai and Gabriel was the main man him self.
"Calyx what's going on?" I said shakily.
"Evangeline...we just received word from the council that Lucifer has sent demons up from the underworld. They could be anywhere, but considering in the past you've been a target of particular interest in the devil King we're going to assume that his spies have infiltrated your new school, it's no longer safe for you there. I'm sorry Evangeline." Calyx explained cryptically.
I was taken aback by his words and tears welled in my eyes.
"No! No! Calyx I just started! I'll be fine, I can take care of myself!" I cried, fighting back the tears.
"Evangeline, I apologise for the inconvenience, but this isn't a risk we're willing to take." He said cooly casting his eyes down. I scanned the eyes of my coven, none of which were stepping out to support me. I backed away from my coven and bolted out the door.
"Eva! Wait!" I heard Luc's voice call after me.
I stopped still in the middle of the street and turned around to face him.
"What Luc? You can't honestly tell me you agree with him? I...I..." My sentence broke as I began to cry. Luc pulled me into his arms as I cried into his shoulder. I pulled away and looked up at his green eyes. He moved my hair out of my face gently and wiped the tears out from under my eyes.
"Evangeline, I believe you can handle yourself and that you'll be fine, but with Lucifer's Demons now at your school...I don't want to risk losing you." He whispered, brushing my cheek gently with his thumb. I cast my gaze away and turned my head.
"Luc..." I sighed and pulled away. I had known Luc had feelings for me for centuries now, but I had never returned those same feelings.
"I know. I know. I'm like your brother and even if you did feel the same way an inner-coven live is forbidden." He said reciting my 'bit' as he liked to call it.
"Luc I'm sorry." I sighed as I waved my hand in front of me and vanished in a cloud of mist.
I sunk back and cradled my head in my hands as I finally let myself cry, alone and in peace and silence.
"Hey sis." I heard a cool, smooth voice behind me. I lifted my head up and stood and turned towards the voice.
"Gabriel." I breathed as I wrapped my arms around his back.
"Top of the Eiffel Tower, just like mom." He said softly as he stroked my back.
"I miss her so much, Gabe." I sighed as I released him.
"I know, Eva. I miss her too." I looked out at the city of lights from the highest point in Paris. My fatigue faltered for a moment as my eyes fixed on a bridge over the Seine river. There was a girl, a young one, she looked about 15 ready to jump off that bridge into the dark waters below.
"Not tonight." I mumbled under my breath. I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply as my wings shot out from behind my back. I got a running start and dove off the top of the tower and sped towards the bridge. I got there just in time. The girl jumped as reached the bridge. I spiralled down and into the water after her. I caught the girl in my arms and pulled her back up to the surface. Gabriel pulled her from my arms and raced her off to the hospital. My wings became heavy in the water and I started to sink down. I fought against the water, but the waves were too much. My wings phased back into my back and my body was swallowed up by the inky black dances of the Seine. I closed my eyes and I fell into the depths of the river, deeper and deeper and deeper. I felt my body emerge from the water as a pair of strong arms wrapped around my mid section. My head hung backwards and my hair was stuck to my face, my clothes were soaked beyond compare. I felt my body be laid down gently on the sidewalk and a pair of hands began pressing on my chest. I coughed up the river water and sat up slowly. My eyes fluttered open and behind the droplets of water that clung to my lashes I saw him.
"Zane?" I coughed, wiping my eyes and moving my hair out of my face.
"Be careful Evangeline Devereaux." I heard his deep voice sweep over me like silk. I inhaled the air surrounding me and when I opened my eyes I was all alone.
