2. Chapter 1
"Stop! You can't do this! You can fight the darkness Evangeline! It's not too late for you! Just don't kill her!" The voice screamed at me. The scent of lemons and rosemary mixed with the smoke that was surrounding me. I pressed two fingers to each of the girl's temples and shut my eyes. I tried to fight against the darkness that was consuming my soul. The city around me was engulfed in white flames, everything was lost and it was all my fault. I opened my eyes and as if were scripted a figure appeared in the smoke. His dark brown hair covered his eyes and he was dressed head to toe in black, my breath caught in my throat as he began to walk toward me.
"Your wings." He breathed before disappearing into thin air. I released the girl and my body collapsed and was swallowed by the flames.
My eyes shot open and I sat upright, sweating. I looked over and noticed my window was open, the wind blowing in the autumn leaves. I slammed it shut, my hands shaking as the felt down my back. I shut my eyes and inhaled deeply as two large, white feathered, wings sprouted from the center of my back. I let out a sigh of relief and smiled to myself as I admired my wings in the mirror. My door swung open, hitting the wall.
"Evangeline Lily Devereaux, put your wings away before someone sees! For the most prized angel in heaven you would think you'd have more common sense." The woman in the doorway shouted in disgust.
"Good morning to you too, Eastlyn." I laughed as I waved my hand and my wings disappeared. Eastlyn sighed and shook her head, before looking back up at me, her serious composure regained.
"Caylx needs to speak with you, immediately." She whispered, her voice low and ominous. I bit my lip nervously and turned away as she shut the door. I clutched the edge of the dresser in my hands and looked up at myself in the mirror as Eastlyn's words played in my head over and over again like a broken record player.
"Calyx needs to speak with you, immediately...."
"Shit." I mumbled under my breath as I began to get ready.
