"Hey Ella, what did you answer for questions number 3 in the History test?" Fleur asked me almost as soon as we had gotten out the class room. She seemed a bit nervous so she probably wasn't sure whether she had chosen the right answer or not.
"What was the question about?" I asked as I opened my locker to put in my history books before heading to lunch with the girls.
"It was the one about The 2nd World War, wasn't it?" Mia then asked wanting to contribute to the conversation.
"No, it was the one about The Cold War." Catalina replied. We were all in the same history class, which was nice because then sometimes we could go our homework together and prepare for tests, which we had done yesterday night as well.
"Uhm I repled b," I then said and smiled to them. Whenever we had a test they'd ask me about the questions they weren't sure about. Probably because I was the one of us who paid the most attention in school.
"No! For real? I chose a!" Fleur complained loudly stomping her feet on the ground like a little girl.
I laughed to myself and closed my locker again after taking my lunch out. Fun fact; I had started bringing lunch to school. "Yea, I honestly don't know why you did that," I said to her and shook my head slightly. I mean a didn't even have anything to do with The Cold War? I wonder what she was thinking when she picked that.
As we made our way towards the canteen I could only faintly hear the girls in the back of my head still talking about the history test that Fleur had messed up in. I just walked mostly in my own little world thinking about Justin once again. It had been about a week since the bonfire, and Justin with his soft, rose petal lips and tender kiss was still constantly on my mind. Not only the tender kiss he had planted on my lips, but everything about him lured me in like a little girl in a candy shop. It was horrible. Of course I hadn't told any of the girls anything, they'd think I was losing my mind, which maybe I was.
The canteen was filled as always and Catalina and I were the only ones who had brought our own lunch. Apparently Catalina had had a humongous family dinner at home with all her Spanish family members, so they had a lot of left overs at home.
"Damn Cat..." I said as I looked at her lunch. "My sandwich has nothing on your buffet."
She started laughing a little and looked at my sandwich. "You gotta come to my place and eat sometime again. My mom misses you," she said smiling and gave me some of her lunch.
"I'd love to!" I exclaimed and took a bite of whatever she had given me. My mouth instantly started watering as if I was a dog. "And when I do, tell your mom to make this," I added and laughed a little more.
Fleur and Mia finally came back after 10 minutes in line. Their food looked less interesting, and they looked just as sad when they saw Catalina's lunch as I had. "I know guys," Catalina said. "My lunch rocks." We all nodded in agreement and giggled a little over her words.
"So how's Jonathan Mia?" I asked and looked at her. She hadn't talked about Jonathan since forever, and I couldn't help but wonder why, because up until a week ago Jonathan was all she spoke about.
"He's pretty good I think. I haven't talked much to him these days." She said and pulled a little at her shoulder. She looked sad about it. My heart broke a little.
"Why not?" Catalina asked beating me to it.
"Well... He has barely called and texted so... You know I don't wanna call or text him first. What if he thinks I'm desperate?" She said hoping that one of us could give her advice. Well that wouldn't be me. I didn't know too much about guys, just the basics. My mom and dad never really were fond of the thought of me dating, in case you were wondering after the sweater incident. Oh yeah, Justin's sweater. I still have it.
"Honey, cut the crap." Fleur said and looked at her with a raised brow. "There's a difference between showing interest and seeming desperate. You like him right?" She then asked making a gesture with her hand.
Mia nodded. "Yea... Yea I do." She said.
"Well then show him! Give him a hint that you're interested!" She said and took Mia's hand reassuringly. Catalina and I both nodded in agreement. I thought that was the best advice any of us could've given her regarding Jonathan. After all Fleur did have more experience with dating guys than the rest of us.
After lunch we had all split up and gone to each of our classes. English was not the same today as any other day. It was sufficiently less interesting for some reason. Maybe because I had a lot on my mind. Or well... I had someone on my mind a lot. I more or less spend most of my time doodling on a piece of paper. I raised my hand and answered questions a few times when I concentrated enough to listen, which wasn't a lot compared to my usual behavior in class. But the only thing that I seemed to think about was Justin. Why was I thinking so much about this guy? It was ridiculous. He shouldn't have been able to get to me like this. Get yourself together Ella. I decided to snap out of it and fully retire my attention to the teacher. You're not winning today Justin.
"Ella, may I talk to you for a second?" My English teacher said after the bell has dismissed us. I packed up my things and walks to the teacher's desk.
"Sure Mr. David. What about?" I simply said with a smile, holding my books in front of my chest.
"Are you okay?" He said and looked up at me. "You seemed... Distant during the first 20-30 minutes of class?" He added looking a slight bit worried. I knew he was probably gonna notice.
"I'm fine Mr. David," I said and smiled friendly. "I just didn't get much sleep last night. I have a lot of homework." I excused hoping he'd buy it.
He smiled up at me and nodded a little. "Senior year is tough. Just promise me to get back to your normal sleeping routine. It'd be a shame having to go from an A+ to an B+ because of bad sleeping habits." He said still smiling. I nodded and left the class in a rush. I had saved my own ass this time by snapping out of my own thoughts. Justin was officially forbidden to think about at school.
My mothers words popped up somewhere in the back of my mind. That it had happened before. Smart young girls losing their focus because of a guy. Because they thought they'd found love, but not every love story ends like Grease, you know.
Get yourself together, Ella.
"What took you so long?" Catalina asked when I finally met then a little down the hall.
"Uhm Mr. David wanted to talk to me. I wasn't very focused in class today." I said slightly embarrassed over my lack of effort in English today.
All the girls gasped and laid a hand on their chest. I couldn't tell if they were being serious or just making fun of me, but my bet was on the 2nd one.
"No way?" Mia said. "You weren't raising your hand every 2 minutes?" Fleur slapped her shoulder and giggled a little with her.
"Guys shut up," Catalina said. "One of us has to be smart, if not we'd all fail." She added having my back. I thanked her with a giggle for that. Catalina always had my back, and she was probably the one I was closest with out of the three, which made sense given the fact that I had known Catalina the longest.
The sun was bright when we went out and I closed my eyes for a second enjoying the late summer sun as it was officially fall in about a week. 1st of September. Some of the leaves on the trees had already started turning a little yellow and brown. Soon they'd be falling down covering the ground in beautiful warm colors, begging for me to sit inside with a cup of hot chocolate and just watch TV shows.
Catalina, Fleur, Mia and I walked towards Fleur's car so we could get home as usual and I was just admiring the trees around the parking lot changing colors when Fleur tapped my shoulder.
"Mhm?" I asked looking at her.
"Someone's trying to make contact with you." She said and pointed towards the other end of the parking lot, and there he was again. There was no mistaking. Strong features, dirty blonde hair. It was definitely Justin. He was waving me over and I didn't even think before I started walking towards him. He was like a magnet forcing me closer to him.
"Hi Justin," I said when I got over there. He was leaning up against a black, very edgy car. It looked very nice. "Nice ride," I said smiling and placing my hands on the roof of it.
"Thanks babe," he said smiling. "She's beautiful isn't she?" He said and looked at the car as if it was the only thing is the world he cared about.
"Definitely," I giggled. "So what do you want?" I said and tapped my hand a few times on the roof of the black shiny car, which was very Justin-like.
"Just wanted to say hi." He said and smiled charmingly in my direction.
"Well hi then," I said and pushed away from the car, taking a few steps away from it. "I have your sweater by the way, when do you want it back?"
"I'm throwing a party tonight at my place, come, and bring my sweater?" He said in an asking manner and smiled at me.
"I'll see what I can do." I said and laughed a little. Did he just invite me to a party at his house?
"Nah, you'll come." He said and wiggled his eyebrows a little up and down. "Hey, you forgot something!" He said. I looked at him furrowing my brows in deep confusion. "You forgot to put your number in my phone," he said and took his phone out of his pocket and handed it to me.
I laughed a little to myself while shaking my head. Wonder how many times that one had worked. I mean it totally worked on my considering I was currently putting my number in his phone.
"There you go." I said and handed him the phone.
"What did you save yourself as?" He asked and smiled at me.
"Ella?" I said laughing. "Bye Justin," I added and turned back around headed to Fleur's car.
Justin had just invited me to his party tonight. Well more or less indirectly. Luckily it was a Friday, so there was a chance that my parents might just let me attend this party. I already felt excited about it, I felt all bubbly on the inside.
"What did he want?" Catalina asked a little skeptically.
"Nothing special," I shrugged. "Indirectly show off his car I guess," I said and rolled my eyes laughing a little. Catalina did the same.
It was now 7pm and I was at home. I felt a little excited about Justin's party even though I hadn't technically asked if I could go yet. I had no idea how my parents would feel about it, but they had agreed to let me go to that bonfire last week, so why wouldn't they let me go to this party? I mean yea, bonfires and parties are sort of not the same thing, but... I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I never really went out partying anyways. Usually I just went to my closest friends' birthday parties and I never got drunk, so I was positive about this. Okay, here it goes.
"Yes?" She said and handed me another pot after she had washed it.
"Can I go out tonight?" I asked. I was still a little nervous, cause there was definitely a chance that she'd say no.
"Out where?" She replied soaking a plate under the steaming water coming out of the faucet.
"My friend is having a party, and he asked if I could come." I said and shrugged as it if wasn't a big deal.
"He?" My mom said almost sounding surprised and looking at me wide eyes.
"Yea?" I started and looked at her a bit confused by her sudden surprise. "My friend I borrowed the sweater from. He wants it back." I said with a small smile hoping maybe she'd soften up.
My mom nodded a little. "Well," she started and looked at me with a reassuring smile. "He'll have to get it another day."
"What?" I said in confusion. She wasn't gonna let me go? "Mom I-"
"No, Ella. You're not going to this party. Bring the sweater to school tomorrow and give it to him then." She said. She didn't even glance at me.
"We don't go to the same school mom." I said annoyed and dried the plate she gave me a bit more aggressively than I had with the others.
"Well then give it to him some other time."
"Mom, why can't I just go?" I pleaded at her hoping that she'd find me pathetic enough to let me go.
"Because, Ella. I don't need a reason not to let you go. You're not going - the end!" She raised her voice and looked at me with a serious look.
I pursed my lips and groaned in annoyance. "Thanks a lot mom." I spat and threw the towel on the counter as turned around and went towards my room.
"Don't you dare slam that door Ella!" My mom yelled from the kitchen. I pictured her with her finger pointed towards me and her lips pressed together in a tight line.
"Watch me!" I yelled back in annoyance and slammed the door as hard as I possibly could. I knew I would probably regret that later on, but it felt good for a moment.
