The thing is with women Tom you have to let them think that they are actually winning so tell her that you will stay in till say eight o’clock each night before going out; that way she wins and you win too.’
How could she complain then as you are spending a little time with her and your son and you still get to see your friend as well.’
“Colin you are a Genius.’ I never thought that I would come up with an answer but you have.’
“Years of experience Tom,’
Tom took a big satisfied drink from his pint of Scotch then set it down.’
Colin got up and placed some money in the juke box and selected some records then sat down again. Colin was partial to listening to soul music. The sound of James Brown and the famous flames sang “bring it up.’
Colin joined in with the chorus as Tom sat and listened. He had never really listened to soul music before and was intrigued to find out more about it so Colin gave him a quick lesson on the roots of soul music. “When Sam Cooke sang “A change is gonna come.” Colin explained how black people in America had been persecuted, raped, lynched, there houses burnt to the ground by the Ku Klux Klan. In 1866 the first leader General Nathan Bedford Forrester became the first Grand Wizard of the Klan his aim was the reestablishment of white supremacy in America. White republican derided as carpetbaggers and scallywags. The Klan were noted for wearing long white robes with hoods that had the eye hole cut in so they could see. They rode about the south on horseback murdering and burning schools and churches to the ground. Ulysses S Grant outlawed the Klan and by 1876 the entire south was under democratic rule. It started again in 1920 after the silent film “The Clansman” was shown again the reign of terror swept over the southern states until the great depression of 1944 temporarily disbanded the Klan.
“Now in here we are in 1961 and it is still going on. Black people throughout the world not only in America are the victims of racial hatred Tom.
Why should a man be persecuted, segregated from white people just because of the colour of his skin.
“Well I don’t see a difference between us Colin; you have always been my friend.
“That is because you see me as a person in my own right not some ignorant black man Tom.
The world must change and that is what Sam Cooke is telling us.
“I agree with you Colin. To be honest I never paid much attention to the plight of black people here in North Shields. My father once told me about some riots that took place in South Shields and Sunderland but you know when you are a kid nothing seems to matter and I soon forgot.’
I guess I am as much to blame as all the rest Colin but I swear to you now never again will I close my eyes to what is happening to black people ever again.
You are a good man Tom; just like your father. Come on let’s go and look at Mickey’s house and tell him what I plan to do.’
They walked together up Saville Street then right along until the past The Turbinia pub and the Corvette. Tom knocked on the door and Alison answered. Hi Tom it’s a bit late for a visit isn’t it.’
“Sorry Alison; this is Colin Moses who is a painter and decorator and a very good friend of the family. He has come to have a look at what needs to be done and he will come and do it all tomorrow.’
“What wallpaper and paint the whole house in one day?
