Tom put down the receiver then picked it up again and rang Shirley’s parents.

“Hello Ruby this is Tom; Shirley had a little boy half an hour ago.’

Nine pounds two ounces he was.’

Thanks for letting us know Tom, is Shirley alright?’

“Yes she’s fine; she has decided to call the baby Jeffery, Thomas.’

That’s nice Ruby said; telling her husband at the same time.’

Shirley has named him after my father said Ruby proudly.’

“He will be over the moon.’ tell her we will be down to see her later will you Tom. “Well done.’

Thank you Ruby goodbye.’

Tom replaced the receiver again than rang his best friend.’

“Hi Mickey I just became the father of a little boy. Jeffery Thomas Taylor.’

“Bloody marvellous matey; Mickey was shouting to tell his mother the news.’

“We will be going out tonight to wet the little lads head then?’

“Of course; tell my dad I will meet you both in Uncle Tom’s cabin after visiting. I will get a taxi down. Tom then rang Interflora and ordered a big bunch of red roses to be sent to ward nine for his wife.’

When he got back to the ward Shirley was asleep. He sat by the bedside looking at her. She looked so peaceful that he let her sleep until it was nearly six o’clock.’

The nurse brought Jeffery to be fed so they pulled the screens around then handed the little one to her. Again the baby knew what to look for and his mouth closed around her breast.

Tom told Shirley that he’d told her mother as well as his own and he told her that they were overjoyed; especially as you had named Jeffery after her father.’

“She’s coming down soon she said.’

“Knowing my mam she will be on her way now with my father.’

“My mother is anxious to see her first grandson too.’

“Did you not ask her to come up?’

“I didn’t know if you would be up to visitors.’

“I’ve had a baby Tom, not major surgery.’

“I think he looks like you, what do you think?

“I think he has your eyes and my chin.’

“I don’t know I thought he has your eyes but as long as he’s healthy I don’t care.’

After feeding Jeffery Tom opened the screens they came round with a cup of tea and Tom was offered one.

“He hadn’t eaten since that morning and his stomach was growling now.’

I guess you will be going out with Mickey tonight are you?’

“Yes love; my dad is coming too.’

“Well go easy, you have a shop to run in the morning.’ You don’t want to be baking bread with a hang over do you?’

“I’m only going to have a couple.’

“I hope so mind.’

Just then in walked Ruby and her Husband Robert.’

“Let’s have a look at him then said Margaret as Shirley opened the shawl to let her see the baby.’

Isn’t he just like you when you were a baby she cooed?’

“I rang your grandfather and told him and he’s over the moon for you Shirley.’

Did you tell him that I’ve called him Jeffery?’

“Yes and he said poor little bugger being named after him but really he’s pleased you could tell in his voice. He’s calling in tomorrow afternoon to see you love.’
