He had wet himself with the shock of being beaten and the combination of drugs that he was on. The poor lad withdrew into himself; mentally he was in a very dark place and it was only his love of music keeping him going.’
In the backend of the sixties He would be seen carrying a “Boom box “which became the fore runner of the ghetto blaster’ He carried it on his shoulder and would sing along to the tunes on it. His guitar would be strapped to his back as he took to sitting outside of the entrance to the new library in Northumberland Square. He felt safer there.’
“There were rumours that he owed a lot of money to drug dealers and that is why he was beaten. Eventually “Apples became desperate, he was lonely; and severely depressed. One night they found his body,’ Brian Appleton had hung himself.
Whatever had possessed “Apples to take his own life, no one will ever know?
“No more would people hear him sing or hear his Boom box playing. One thing was certain North Shields had lost one of its characters.
Tom and Mickey boarded a plane for the first time in their lives.
They were scared shitless but tried to put on a brave face as the air hostess went through the safety procedures.
Alison and Shirley both took it in their stride as the plane taxied along the runway before lifting off.
They were flying to Benidorm where they would be staying in the Gran Hotel Bali near the coast. The four hour flight from Newcastle to Palma would stop at Heathrow then take off again with a total of 82 passengers. The BEA Comet 4B was designed to carry that many passengers. The Thomas Cook travel agency had begun to recognise the tourist industry after the war and offered people the chance to experience some sunshine for a week at only £32 pounds and ten shillings for an all inclusive holiday to Spain.
Tom was surprised at how smooth the flight was. There was very little in the way of turbulence and he and Mickey settled into it no bother. They looked out of the windows occasionally to see the cloud formation which looked like giant balls of cotton wool. They talked away to one another all the way there and when the captain told them they were coming in to land they looked out as the plane began its descent.
There was only one heart stopping moment when the plane hit the tarmac and the breaks were applied but once they were on the ground they were fine.
They got their luggage and headed for the large coach which would take them to their resort.
“The temperature was very apparent here and it wasn’t long before the lads were both feeling the heat and they removed their coats and opened the window to let in some air.’
They looked down as the coach manoeuvred around the hills. It turned effortlessly then got onto some straight roads where they saw farm land and vine yards.
The coach took another hour to reach the hotel and they waited until all the luggage was unloaded by the driver before going to check in. They were escorted to a room then the room was opened for them and they went inside.
The Rooms were spacious enough with a table and basic cooking facilities. There was a shower and toilet and two bedrooms the beds were all single but they could be pushed together quite easily. They all got changed into some cooler things.
Both Tom and Mick wore some shorts and a light Bermuda shirt with sandals.
