make Yorkshire puddings. Peeling some potatoes, she set them away to boil then peeled som carrots and cut up a white cabbage.

Agnes sat drinking her tea before placing the plump pork sausages on a tray and popping them in the oven. She turned the other pans down to a simmer then opened the kitchen window to let out the steam. She saw Colin Moses leave for home about twenty past six. He had finished one side of the street and would be back tomorrow to gloss her house; it would mean leaving all the windows and doors open until they dried.

Tom did not like the smell of paint it made him cough all the time and he also felt sick.

When he walked in he got a whiff of it from the undercoat.

“What’s that stink mother?’

“The Council are painting all the houses in the street son.’

“I can’t stand the smell of paint you know that.’

“It cannot be helped Tom it has to be done.’

Tom took a large handkerchief from his pocket and tied it around his face like the cowboys did to stop breathing the dust when herding the cattle.

It wasn’t as bad now he thought but he would have to go out after tea.

Tom heard the same complaint as his father came in and watched as he took off his coat then hung up his cap over his sons.

“Young Colin Moses is bringing us some paint tomorrow so I thought you could crack on and give the place a spruce up. I can strip the walls and go and get four rolls of wallpaper tomorrow.

“What’s wrong with what we have on?’

George it has been up ten years’ it’s turned yellow like the paintwork.’

“Oh alright I will do it.’

“Well I’m going out then because I will be barking like a dog said Tom through a masked face.

“Come on we will have our dinner.’

Polly served up the toad in the hole and then added the vegetables. Tom pulled the mask up over his mouth but kept his nose covered.

He ate his dinner very quickly then hurried to his room he came out stripped to the waist soon after washed his face and body then sprayed himself with brut which took some of the smell of the paint away. “I know it’s a daft question but where are you and Mickey going tonight?’

“I thought we’d go to the YMCA for a game of snooker.’

“Well at least its Friday tomorrow son and you will have the weekend off.’

“Yes, I’ve still got to go in Saturday Moring though mam. I’ve got no wages until next bloody week.’

“Never mind lad I will give you a few bob to go out.’

“Thanks Da’

Tom put on his tee shirt and a jacket then headed over the road.

Mickey was ready to go as he came to the door.’

“Had to get out mate the smell of paint is killing my chest.’

“Where are we gannin?’ asked Mickey as they hurried along.’

“I thought we’d go to the YMCA for a game of snooker.’

We can have a game of cards if the lads are in.’

They crossed the road and cut up the street past Woolworths then turned left.
