“Well I will certainly do that.’

Right then I will leave you to it. Here is my card; just give me a ring when you have come to a decision.’

Tom shook hands with Harvey and once again he knew instantly that he was talking with a Mason by his handshake. How high up the chain he was he didn’t know.’

Tom sat back down in his leather seat thinking of the offer that the co-op were making.’ He wondered whether they had made Norman Archer the same proposition.’

He rang Shirley then closed the door and told her what he had just been offered.

Shirley was totally gobsmacked.’

“What are you going to do Tom?’

“I don’t know; it would mean leaving my home in North Shields to a place where no-one knows who I am.’

“Are we really that bothered Tom; I mean if you were to join the templar’s you would be mixing in the right company anyway.’ You would soon learn to make new friends.’

“What about Mickey?’

“You could ask him to join once you get yourself in the know.’

“Mickey wouldn’t join he’s like my father steeped in tradition.’

“We its up to you love, but if you want to get on then this is what you should do.’

“A four figure salary as well Tom do you realise how that would help Jeffery; we could give him a better life. Send him to Kings in Tynemouth where he would get the best in education. He would be mixing with kids who wouldn’t judge him because his father has his own business; unlike like he would in North Shields if we were to stay.’

“Yes, I see where you are coming from Shirley.’

Anyway it’s your decision Tom and I won’t hold it against you if you were to turn it down. Look I’ve got to go my mother is expecting me. See you later. “Tom!

“I love you.’

“I love you too Shirley.’

“Tom knew then and there that the decision had been made for him; it was his son’s future that he was thinking about not himself here.

He went out and looked at his watch it was nearly two o’clock. Rob Liz and Nancy were washing everything down as Tom went out and called them all around the table.’

“Look here everyone I have just been made an offer from the director of the Co-op they have offered me the chance to expand my business and open up a factory in West Monkseaton.

“Does that mean we are all going to loose our jobs here Mr Taylor said Nancy with concern written all over her face.’

“No it would not but I would need another shop hand.’

Because I am going to make Liz the manager of this bakery; you all know her she is trustworthy, hardworking; and knows the bakery trade better than I do.’

She was at Archer’s when I first came as an apprentice. I want you to show her the same respect as you have shown me; that is if she is prepared to take the job on.’

Tom looked over at Liz and waited for an answer.’

“I would love the opportunity Mr Taylor.’

Nancy you will take over Liz’s Job running the shop and will be in charge when the new girl comes in. be fair and treat her with the same respect as Liz has shown you.’

“Me in charge of a shop; wow, that’s great.’

“Now Rob you have proved to be an excellent baker and confectioner.
