The young man had a good mop of curly hair it was cut in a fashionable sixties style and he look more like a pop star than a director from the Co-op.

Tom called for Rob Darby and asked him to ask Nancy Carter to bring tea and a selection of everything they sold.’

“Everything boss?’

“Everything Rob thanks’

“Right away boss.’

Rob disappeared then went to see Nancy and gave her the instructions from her boss.

She took two clean stainless steel trays and cut up a selection of pies pasties and then brought in the special fruit cakes with fresh cream, chocolate éclairs, peach Melbas, and fruit tarts that the bakery made. The tea was served and Nancy gave the man a shy smile before leaving.’

“Pretty girl; is she married?’

“No; actually she’s just broke up with her boyfriend.’

“Really said Harvey as he reached out and sampled a piece of steak and kidney pie,

which was still warm.’

“Those ladies out there weren’t wrong Mr Taylor.’ You food is first class quality may I try the pasties?

“Call me Tom please; you can try the lot Harvey.’

Harvey said that he didn’t eat breakfast and was now quite hungry.’

He sipped on his tea and then said how many do you think you could bake for us Tom?’

What here in North Shields.’

“No, he laughed out loud; in the whole of the North East.’

“I only have five ovens and the staff you see here Harvey.’

“What if I was to offer you the chance to expand your business and give you a big enough factory which you would be in charge of?’

“You see Tom we have been informed by a certain person who will remain nameless; that you are to join our exclusive group.’

“We at the Co-op are interested in people like that you see. We like to help people like you get on.’

“Is the factory something you would be interested in Tom. You would be making bread, pies, and cakes exclusively for us.’

“Tom now knew what Jacob was talking about when he said becoming a freemason would open up new avenues for him.

“Where would the factory be based Harvey.’

In West Monkseaton it is being built now as we speak; you could still have this shop and sell to who ever you wish.’

“We will supply you with all the catering staff who you will train. They will follow your instructions and recipes.

“You will be on a four figure salary Tom and as part of the deal we will purchase you a house near the factory with all the modern facilities. There would be gas central heating, inside toilets, five bedrooms, and a fully fitted kitchen with gas oven, washer, and drier. In fact all you would need to do would be to move in. We would supply our own delivery vans and you would get your own top of the range company car free of course with all fuel paid for through the company.’

“You do not need to make up your mind yet Tom as you are not yet a member of our Brotherhood as such; but if you were to join then the offer is still open to you.’

“I see; so there is a condition.’

“Yes; it is a very lucrative offer Tom and I would think very carefully about it.’
