"An invasion of Privacy" tells the story of two boys Tom Taylor and Mickey Binks growing up in the middle 1950's. Mickey is the Elvis fan Tom is into James Dean. Tom is not interested in school and plays the wag most days. Mickey and Tom are inseparable and live in the same street. they leave school and Mickey takes on various labouring jobs, Works down on the quay; then as a coalman before getting a job on the Grainger market in Newcastle selling fruit and vegetables. Tom loves cooking and has helped his gran make bread, tarts and scones. he gets a job as an apprentice Baker and confectioner for Archer's bakery. read about their exploits as the two boys grow into men. If you remember what it was like growing up in the fifties then this is definitely one for you to read.

Shirley had held Tom’s dinner until Mickey came before putting it out as she didn’t want him eating alone.’

“Look we are going to the club to night do you want to come with us?’

“Yes they are showing Giant with James Dean up stairs in the concert room.’

Look mate if you and Shirley are going I won’t bother; you don’t get out a lot together so go and enjoy yourselves

“We won’t hear of it Mickey so after dinner we are dropping Jeffery off at my mother’s house then we are going up to the club. Why don’t you go see your mother then we will keep you a seat in the club.

“Alright then if you are sure that you don’t mind.’

“Of course we don’t said Shirley.’

 

Sitting in the club the film started and Shirley sat with Tom with Mickey on the end.

They had a perfect view of the eight foot screen.

The story told of a wealthy Texas family working on a ranch after they move there to breed horses. The film follows the family over quarter of a century from 1920 until after WW2. Themes of racial prejudice, discrimination and class and gender are documented in this blockbuster of a movie. Rock Hudson plays the wealthy ranch owner (Jordan Brick Benedict) Elizabeth Taylor his love interest Leslie Lynnton who he marries after a world wind romance. James Dean plays (Jett Rink) in only his third picture plays the handy man who is bequeathed a plot of land by Luz Benedict after she is thrown from a horse. Jett discovers oil on the plot of land and swears to ruin Jordan after they have a fight over Leslie. Leslie and Jordan have two children and Jordan would like his son to take over the ranch when he grows up be he has other ideas. He wants to be a doctor. Leslie points out the living conditions of the Mexicans and asks brick Benedict to step in to help. His son meets and marries a Mexican girl and tensions increase when they visit a restaurant owned by an ex sergeant major.

Jordan Brick Benedict gets into a fight with the sergeant after he refuses to serve Mexicans and loses and the whole family are evicted from the café. Jett Rink turns to drink during his oil success after allowing Jordan to drill on the land and makes a lot of money from the venture. The film closes with a pan shot of The Benedict family one child is White American and the other Hispanic.

When the movie finished the lights went back on and everyone clapped. It was a terrific film. Shirley said that James Dean deserved his Oscar nomination for his role.

“It was a pity that James Dean didn’t live long enough to see its success.’

They came out of the club and walked towards his mother’s house.

When they got there Jeffery was asleep in his pram. Shirley thanked Agnes for looking after Jeffery.’

They left soon after and walked home.’

“Thanks for tonight Shirley; I really appreciated it said Mickey who went back along to his own house alone.’

Shirley placed Jeffery into his cot as he’d been fed and changed he didn’t stir and slept right through until the next morning.’

 

Mickey was awake at 6 am. He’d hardly slept; he hoped that Alison might have rung him but she didn’t.’

He left the house earlier than usual pushing his barrow up the road. Mickey had to resign himself that Alison wasn’t coming back and that their relationship was over.’

Tom made his deliveries and on his way back called in on his friend who seemed to be carrying on as usual.
