Mickey and her are going to go out every night and if he doesn’t then she will go out alone.’
“You know I asked her why she hadn’t put any bait up for him and you know what she said.’
He can put his own bait up he knows when the cupboards are.’
Now come on Tom does that sound like a woman in love?’
“No it doesn’t, but if I tell him he might turn against me.’
“No he wouldn’t Tom; he knows you better than Alison, I mean you’ve been friends since you were four years old for God sake.’
“That’s a point; well I will tell him but at the end of the day it’s his life; if he marries her he will have to lie in his bed I’m afraid.
“I am going not going to answer the door to her Tom and I want you to fix a bolt on the back door so that I can lock it up so she cannot come around here when she feels like it.
“Okay I will do it after my dinner; is it ready?’
Almost love Sorry I’m a bit behind; I’ve only got the dumpling to make and put in the oven to brown off.’
“Well then I have just enough time to fix that bolt on the back door in the yard then haven’t I?’
Tom went into the shed next to the toilet and brought out his tools and the bolt that he’s acquired from Staggie when they moved in but had not got round to doing it.
He measured the distance for the bolt to fit. Then took some half inch countersunk screws and fixed it to the door. Twenty minutes later Tom tried it for size.
“There you are all done.’
That was quick; oh by the way this parcel came for you this afternoon.’
“Tom picked it up then took a pair of scissors from the draw and cut along the edge then peered inside. He put his hand inside and pulled out a large book. There was a note attached to it.
“It’s from Peter; he’s asked me to join the Free Masons.’
“Are you going to?’
“I don’t know yet I need to find out more about them first. This is why he has loaned me this book.’
“What’s it called?’
“Unlocking the Templar’s Secrets.’
It sound’s very cloak and dagger doesn’t it?’
Certainly mysterious that’s for sure.’ Don’t worry love; I’m not going to jump right in until I’m sure about what is entailed.’
“My Uncle Roger was a free mason you know and he never looked back. He was in the merchant navy and was never out of work.’
Peter said my business would thrive if I became a mason.’
“That sounds very lucrative doesn’t it?
Well it certainly grabbed my attention straight away.’
I mean we are not doing too badly but I’m sure we could do even better with Peters help.’
Shirley put out his dinner as he scanned a few pages then he set it on the spare seat whilst he ate his dinner.
“This is lovely said Tom as he juggled a hot piece of carrot around his mouth.’
“Chicken casserole takes no making at all really.’
There was a knock at the front door and Tom went to answer it.’
