7. The Underwater Kingdom
"Not even light can penatrate water."
The Underwater Kingdom is not of the Gods. 2,560 years ago,no one knew of it's exsitence. The Nymphs who live there have histories pre-dating anything in the lands. These histories are carved into rocks and shells as well as being recorded more recently onto books made from seaweed. The Nymphs are humanoid in form but have gills, webbed feet, some fins and other fishy aspects. While they are capable of walking on land, the sun is painful to them and if they go three days without being fully submerged in water (preferably salt water) then they can dry out and die. Because of this, Nymphs rarely go up to the surface and when they do it is usually at night. There were, of course, legends about strange people who lived under the waves, but no one really believed them.
So, you can imagine, it came as a shock when King Athel awoke one night babbling about a vision that he had received from the Gods that told of a kingdom under the sea. Athel ordered the search begin for the Underwater Kingdom and the council were on the verge of deposing him for madness when the kingdom was found. All were astonished, not least of all when Athel succeeded in creating friendly relations and taking the Nymph princess to wife. Unfortunately, peace did not last and soon the fishermen of West Port had declared war on the Nymphs. Although a treaty has been signed up and the war is officially over, tension is still high between West Port and the Underwater Kingdom. The crown prince of the Nymphs now sits on the council, though it is a tenuous relationship.
Fifty years ago, the great, great, great, great granddaughter of King Athel had a vision of lands across the sea. Determined to follow in her ancestors footsteps, the young queen headed out to sea, this time via East Port. Crowds lined the docks to cheer her off. Her ship was never seen again.
The Underwater Kingdom provides The Lands with precious stones and gems as well as the purest oil and the choicest seafood. They are in direct competition with West Port and are winning. West Port has complained to the council many times but there is nothing that can be done.
Unless the missing Queen is heard from, the Nymphs are the only royal blood left.
