It came time for lunch, so I made my way down to the lunchroom after putting my things in my locker. Ryder had pretty much been reuniting with his friends all day, which I expected. I admit I was a little sad that I couldn’t spend my day with him, but I understood. If I was in his position, I’d so the same thing.
I got in line, Meg showing up shortly after me. We always seem to be in sync with our times arriving to lunch. Today’s lunch choices were bbq patty on a bun, or chicken nuggets. Since the bbq patty looks like actual dog food, I want with the chicken nuggets that look a little under cooked.
I grabbed some baby carrots, strawberries, and a water bottle as I made my way to the counter where I paid for my lunch. It was so routine. I squirted some ketchup onto my chicken nuggets before going to sit with Trish and Jayde.
“That looks like barf.” Trish said, pointing to my chicken nuggets. Trish has always hated school lunches. She always brings her own lunch to school.
“Better than our other option.” I roll my eyes.
“What are we talking about?” Meg sits next to me.
“Trish is talking about how all school food looks like barf, so nothing new.” I joke, though it’s true.
“Have you guys seen Zander? He wasn’t in last period.” Meg asks, taking a big bite out of a chicken nugget.
“No. He’s probably sick.” I say.
“Maybe it’s a bug or something.” Jayde exclaims.
“Probably.” Meg agrees, now diving into her carrots.
I scan the room for Ryder, but I don’t see him. I figured he might be a little late to lunch, but not this late. I decided to ignore it and just jump back into the conversation at-hand. We’ve moved on to talking about the auditions. I honestly wasn’t sure if I even wanted to audition anymore. I mean, I didn’t need to go to New York for anything, though I probably wouldn’t anyway. Still, I saw no use in auditioning for something useless.
While our conversation carried on, I found myself looking around the cafeteria for Ryder. Lunch was over, and as I went over to dump my tray, I still didn’t see Ryder. I didn’t know what to think. He could’ve gotten sick and went home, but he seemed fine this morning. His parents may have called him home to do some moving stuff, but that wouldn’t make much sense. I really didn’t know what to think.
On my way to my next class, I went early so I could go to Ryder’s locker. I raced down the hallway, hoping Ryder would be there. Sure enough, there he was. I ran over to him.
“Where were you?” I asked in a sweet tone.
“We have to talk later okay?” Ryder’s face was stone.
“Is something wrong?” I ask frowning.
“Are you free after school?” Ryder dismisses my question.
“I think so.”
“Okay, can you drive over to my house after school? We need to talk.”
“Okay.” I was nervous now.
Ryder started to walk away, then turned to add something, “Will you ask Meg to come too?”
“Umm… sure,” Then I remembered, “Oh wait! She has plans with Zander.”
“She won’t. Please ask her.” Ryder kisses my forehead and goes off to class.
He leaves me with deep confusion. I’m not sure if something bad is going on, but I’m 99.9% sure I’m not going to like it. The whole Meg and Zander thing is confusing me too. What did Ryder mean by she won’t? The only thing I could do was ask Meg to come to Ryder’s house after school with me, and hope for the best.
