14. Remembering the Past

After unloading several boxes into various rooms for about two hours, Ryder asked me if I was hungry. My stomach roared and he took that as a yes. We went into the kitchen, and at first I thought that he was going to the fridge. Then he turned and took the landline off the wall. My house doesn’t have a landline so I was surprised for some reason. He dialed a number and I could hear a faint ringing sound.

I heard a woman’s voice but couldn’t make out the words. I realized what was going on as soon as I heard Ryder say, “One large pepperoni pizza and breadsticks please.” Then he gave me a wink.

Out first date. He asked me what kind of pizza I wanted and I just told him I didn’t care. Which was a lie because I hated pepperoni or mushroom, but I didn’t care. I just filled up on breadsticks and had one slice of pizza to be polite. I never told him I didn’t like pepperoni. I guess I started to like it just because that’s what we had on our first date. It was such a sappy, but sweet, day. I sometimes dream about it still.

It just hits me how much it means to me that he remembered. God! How could I be such an idiot? Dating Jake. How pathetic was I? I stooped down to a level so low I didn’t even know such a level existed. But Ryder is here now, and everything is better.

“You remembered.” I say softly.

“How could I forget?” Ryder smiles.

Ryder’s dad is in the next room over, so we can’t be too romantic, but he kisses my forehead. It’s more of a peck, but it’s nice.

“You know what?” I begin, “I never told you that I didn’t like pepperoni.” I don’t know why I say it, but the words come out.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I can order something else if you,” I cut him off.

“No,” I smile gently, “I just mean, well, on our first date I told you I didn’t care what kind of pizza you ordered, even though I hated pepperoni. I was just so happy you know? After that, I loved pepperoni. I had it every night after you moved because it reminded me of you. I know, it’s stupid.”

“It’s not stupid Bridgett. If we’re being honest here, I ate breadsticks a lot after I moved because it reminded me of how you ate almost all of them on our first date.” Kyle laughs.

“I ate that many of them?” I laugh too.

“Yeah, kind of. It wasn’t a bad thing though.” We both laugh and Ryder’s dad walks in.

“What do you two lovebirds want for lunch?” Ryder’s dad is always teasing us. It’s nice. It makes me feel more comfortable and not so awkward around him.

“I ordered a pepperoni pizza and breadsticks. Is that okay?” Ryder looks like he’s wincing. I choke back a laugh.

“Whatever. I’m going to the store okay? I’ll be back in maybe an hour or so.” Mr. Paisley grabs his car keys and starts toward the door.

Ryder and I nod. “Don’t burn the house down while I’m gone.” Ryder’s dad jokes as he leaves.

Just like that, Ryder and I are alone.
