Tuesday I had plans with only Ryder after school. Nothing fancy, just dinner with his parents at his house. I hardly knew his mom, so I wondered how well it would go. From what Ryder has said though, his parents love me. I’m happy about that. I was afraid his parents would be strict and hate me for not blessing them if they sneezed or something stupid like that. They weren’t that way at all. Ryder’s dad is extremely loose, and kind of fun to be around. I was looking forward to it.
I grabbed my stuff out of my locker and started toward the doors. I got outside, breathing in my hometown air. The last bit of it I would have for a while. I headed toward Ryder’s car since he had driven me to school in the morning. He wasn’t there so I waited. My calm waiting was disturbed by Cass, who came up yelling something.
“What?” I asked as she came nearer.
“The recall,” She paused out of breath, “The recalls have been moved up to Thursday, so we’re leaving tomorrow.”
My initial thought was that she was lying to make me do something stupid, but the fact that she ran here and the look in her eyes told me it was no joke. That somehow made it so much worse. I was supposed to have until Saturday! This was the last night I would have with Ryder for a while. They said the recalls could last for two weeks or up to one month.
“Are you serious?” I must’ve looked stupid due to my shock.
“Duh! I just fucking ran here from gym class! I don’t do this very often. Too much risk for a chipped nail or smeared mascara.” Cass rolled her eyes as if it were obvious.
“Why are you telling me anyway?”
“Because if you didn’t know, that wouldn’t look for me to show up as the girl associated with the two girls who missed the flight. Make sure you tell Meg, and if you forget I’ll be pissed.” Cass stated fiercely as she turned to strut off.
Right then, Ryder came. I didn’t even know how to explain this to him. He apologized for being late, but I just nodded. We hopped in the car and he noticed something was wrong.
“What’s up?” He put the car into drive.
“The recall auditions got rescheduled.” I stated sadly.
“That means more time here right?” Ryder asked, though his voice hinted that he knew something was wrong.
“No. I have to leave tomorrow.” It felt someone had took a steak to my heart. Those words made me cringe.
“What?” Ryder was in shock.
“Yeah, I’ll probably get an email or something later tonight with all the information. It sucks! Recalls could last two weeks, or even a month Ryder! It’s not fair to you. You… you should break up with me.” The words stung like rubbing alcohol on a cut.
“Bridgett, there is nothing that could make me break up with you. Yes, it will be sad when you’re gone, but I’ll hang in there.”
“But… but you know it could be longer. I heard there are a lot of parts to fill, at least sixty! Even if I get a small part, I’ll have to stay in New York for a long while. I need to let you go. It wouldn’t be fair to you if I held you back.” I didn’t know what I was even saying!
“Are you breaking up with me?”
“Only if you want to.”
“I don’t want to! I can wait for you! I love you Bridgett.” Ryder’s words were meaningful and sweet.
“If I do get a part though, I could just say no and come back.” I suggest.
“No, I won’t let you give something huge up for me.”
“But you’re giving up something huge for me Ryder.”
“Look, if you get a part, I will wait for you. I pro-” I cut Ryder off.
“Don’t promise! Don’t you dare promise you’ll wait for me! If I get a part, I need you to promise me something.”
“What is it?” Ryder’s facial expression showed nervousness.
“I need you to promise me, that if I get a part and have to stay in New York, that you won’t wait. I need you to promise me you’ll move on and forget about me.”
“No!” Ryder is stern.
“Promise me Ryder.” My voice was gentle.
“I love you Bridgett. I will wait for you always.”
“Then if I get a part, I will have to break up with you. I couldn’t bare the feeling of me holding you back. Please don’t make me have to break up with you Ryder. Please just promise me.”
With slight hesitation, it was done. Ryder had promised to move on, and it would hurt if he did, but it was the right thing to do. I knew it would happen, and I knew it'd be tough, but I would always have a special place for Ryder in my heart.
