It’s finally Monday. Ryder is starting school here again, auditions are today, it’s going to be a good day. The last several days have been filled with questions and a couple interview requests from reporters. I declined every request though. I didn’t want my name to be out there, all the sympathy I would get, yuck. I’m not one for attention.
Jake was put into military school. He had a choice of that or juvie. If I ever seem him again, it will be too soon.
I arrive at school fairly early, I’ve asked Ryder to come early as well. I know he’ll want to catch up with his friends and stuff, so I want to see him early. There he is when I walk in. He’s the only one. I throw my backpack onto our usual table and then go over to Ryder. He hugs me tightly and gives a me a little kiss on the lips.
Our moment is cut short when Mrs. Heffer walks by.
“Bridgett! Could I talk to you for a second please?” Mrs. Heffer asks. Mrs. Heffer is one of nicest teachers at our school.
“Sure. Sorry Ryder, just a sec.” I reply, heading over to Mrs. Heffer.
“I don’t mean to pry, and if you don’t want to talk about what happened that completely fine, but I just want to ask you something.” Mrs. Heffer says kindly.
“It’s fine.” I say.
“Okay. So first of all, I’d like to say that I’m sorry for what happened.” sympathy, yuck, “Second of all, I wanted to know if you were scared before it happened. When I asked you if you were okay, were you lying?”
I debate lying, then decide not to, “Yes. I lied.”
“Bridgett, darling, did anything happen before the incident?” Mrs. Heffer asks concerned.
“No. Well…” I pause, “Sort of. That morning, he pulled me aside and pinned me against the wall, but Megan came up and helped. It wasn’t anything really.”
“Honey, why didn’t you say something?”
“I don’t honestly know.”
