New Romantics

Umm ... How does one go about summing up a story with multiple fandoms involved? Song belongs to Taylor Swift. Each anime mentioned belongs to their respectful owners. Each book series mentioned belongs to their respective owners. Each cartoon series mentioned belongs to their respective owners. Each video game belongs to their respective owners. Aladdin belongs to Disney.

1. New Romantics

A faint pop beat was coming from the speakers.  Not that Kabuto Yakushi minded ... or wanted for that matter.

Karaoke nights always sucked if Orochimaru tagged along.  They were always too funny to handle: Orochimaru was never that good a singer, and Orochimaru plastered while trying to sing was even worse.  It was the reason why he was barred from almost every single bar in the Sound Village.

Except for one: a little no-name place almost on the edge of town.  It belonged to a Sound-ninja-turned-performer that was sweet on both Orochimaru and Kabuto.  She had been out for a while, and she had them watch the place.

Orochimaru started grinning like a goof to the music.  “Hey, Kabuto,” he slurred.  “Turn it up.  This is my jam.”

Here we go again, Kabuto thought as he raised the volume.

It was the same fight over and over again, like history had a nasty habit of repeating itself.

For Jay and the gang, this was nothing new.  Back in the early days of the war, they had no idea what they were getting into, had no idea what the war against Time would do to them.

Despite them being the young age of seventeen, the seven were in fact, too mature for their age.  Most kids spent their nights partying and cramming for tests.  They spent theirs fighting the god of time, and trying to come up with excuses for not doing their homework.

They were bored of this.  They wanted an end to it.  They wanted normal lives, again.

“We’re going to be late!” a ginger-haired girl squealed.

Her dark-haired father sighed and touched his old scar.  He missed the aches he would get every once in a while when Voldemort was near.  He missed all the adventures he had with Ron and Hermione.

At least it didn’t go in vain, he thought as he ran with his daughter through the barrier and onto Platform 9 ¾.

For Eren Jaeger, he was nervous.

He was going on trial for the umpteenth time, and this time, for something Reiner did.

He didn’t realize Reiner’s disappearance would set him up for more jail time.

More jail time for Jaeger meant he’d never be able to help with the recon of Wall Maria.  More jail time meant he’d never be able to see what secret his father hid from him for all those years.

More jail time meant he’d never be able to kill all the Titans.

“Perseus Jackson, what in the Underworld do you think you’re doing?” Annabeth huffed, putting her hands on her hips.

They’d been together for nearly a year now, and he’d always talked about seeing whether or not he was invincible to fire.

“I’m playing with normal fire, Annabeth.  What do you think I’m doing?” he answered as he pushed his finger ever closer to the fire.

“You hurt yourself, your fault, Seaweed Brain,” she grumbled.  “I’m not responsible for any action you ta-”

His finger was glowing.  And, for once, he decided, it didn’t hurt.

“Oh, my gods, this is so cool.  Annabeth!  Come check this out!” he hollered as he blew out the stick and ran toward her.

This is it, she’d told her Pokémon.  This time, we’ll beat Blue.

Leaf had taken the Elite Four challenge three times already, and each time, she lost: her Blastoise against his Venusaur.  Of course, she should expect this outcome, but she’d always beat him in the past.

This time, however, she was not prepared for the twist he threw at her.

He threw his Sandslash against her Flareon.  Her Flareon, for crying out loud!  Not only did it cause her Flareon a blow to the pride, but it cost a portion of its bond with Leaf as well.  It wouldn’t come near her when she called it, and it certainly snarled at it when she tried to feed it Pokéblocks.

She wanted her friend back, and she didn’t know how to get it back.

So, as Nurse Joy healed them for the fourth time, Leaf shed a tear for the loss of trust between her and her Flareon.

Konata missed it.  She missed her high school life where she didn’t have to deal with rumours that she was dating, yet again, another cosplayer.

It wasn’t like she asked to be famous.  It wasn’t her fault that there was suddenly a video game released where the main character looked almost exactly like her.

She wanted to stay home and play with her kids.  She wanted to cuddle up to her husband as he read to her kids.

She wanted normal.  She hated being famous.  She hated cosplaying all day.  Most of all, she hated being a stupid fantasy game’s mascot.

At the Fairy Tail guild, there was no such thing as a good night’s rest.

For Lucy, there was no such thing as a slow day.  One day to another, she followed Natsu and Happy as a faithful companion on each and every one of their misadventures.  They ran into Zeref several times over the course of their journeys, and several times Zeref ignored them.

It was an uneasy co-existence with the Black Wizard, but they weren’t complaining.

Because every time they came back home, the entire guild was waiting with a celebration.

Frisk couldn’t imagine a better life than the one she had with Sans.

Sans, despite his pranks, was actually rather sweet, according to Torielle, and he was often seen escorting the now fifteen-year-old to and from school.

Frisk was the one to ask him out, and it was embarrassing to do so.  She knew him for the longest time, and she was beginning to feel something for him that was more than friendship.

Sans, charming as always, laughed, made a bad pun about her question, and accepted.

Torielle was the happiest Goat Mom a girl could ask for.

Akame couldn’t believe it had been a year since her country was liberated.

She’d been formally invited by Najenda to the celebrations that were taking place, and she respectfully declined.  Akame still had the burden of Night Raid’s crimes hanging over her head like a sword on a dangerously thin thread.

Akame snuck into the capitol with little to no trouble, and she darted around the back alleys to the graveyard.

She’d buried so many friends.  As the crowd cheered and celebrated, she shed tears for Tatsumi, Bulat, Shelle, Mine, Chelsea, Lubbock, and Susano.

Kari hung onto Angewomon as they soared out of sight.

Kari had been dying to get out and see the rest of Japan besides her neighborhood in Tokyo.  She’d heard so many great things about Kyoto that she had to see for herself.

Luckily for her, Gatamon was also anxious to get out and stretch her claws.

Little did she know, but TK was down at one of the temples waiting for her.

Ryuko smiled sadly as she looked to the sky.

It’s been several years since the life fibers left the planet, and normal clothing became a thing.  She’d heard from around the world, there wasn’t much to do with life fibers up in the arctic regions of the earth.

Her sister, Satsuki, ordered the people of the arctic to begin designing and manufacturing clothing that would function like the Goku Uniforms used to – a symbol of rank of class among the people.

She hugged her fuzzy woollen sweater and remembered what it was like to function with the life fibers.  And she missed it.  She missed her old sailor uniform called Senketsu.

She tried her hand at sewing once she was able to get her hands on cloth that wasn’t contaminated with the life fibers.  Her recreation of her friend, she knew, was pitiful and lifeless but it was all she had to remember the good old days of proving herself to her sister.

Ryuko missed the days of fighting with Senketsu and Satsuki to defeat her mother.

Katniss Everdeen wasn’t at all ready for the Quarter Quell.

As much as she hid those feelings of absolute terror from herself, she couldn’t deny that they were there.  Every time Peeta Melark touched her hand, she felt it.  Every time someone spoke to her, she heard it.  Every time she felt a delicious morsel slide down her throat, she tasted it.

And it was very present when she saw Cinna getting dragged away by the Capital’s henchmen.

She couldn’t shake the feeling of hopelessness as she entered the arena.

Lucy kept running.

The lab was looking for her, that she knew.  She couldn’t go back there.  She’d seen and suffered abuse at the hands of those evil men and women.

She’d grown to appreciate the company of humans.  Not all of them were evil.  Many were pleasant, and some were downright adorable.

Lucy had taken up a position as a day care worker as soon as she gotten into Tokyo.  Sure, human kids were loud, and some were annoying, but they were still adorable.  And definitely not worth the bloodshed her psyche wanted.

Closing up one day, one of the mothers turned to her.  “Are you happy here, ma’am?” she asked as she carried her sleeping child.

Lucy stopped for a few moments, and thought.  Was she happy?  Did she really like being around kids so much?

Putting her violent past behind her, Lucy drew in a breath.  No one in Tokyo knew she was a dichlonious.

“Yes,” she answered.  “I am very happy here.  It feels safe.”

The mother smiled.  “If you’re ever in need of anything, feel free to give me a call, Lucy.  I’d be glad to help you,” she replied, scribbling down a number on a scrap of paper.  The mother soon left shortly after.

Lucy looked at the messy writing, smiled, and shed a tear.  My own mother wasn’t like this, she thought as she wondered who the number belonged to.

“Papa, what’s a faction?” Tris asked, tapping her father’s arm.

She must have overheard it in a conversation somewhere, or someone mentioned it to her, Four thought.  He knew he was careful with his four-year-old daughter who reminded him so much of his first love.

“A faction, sweetie, was a division of people you were sorted into that was like you.  There used to be five of them to represent the five parts that help make up a human life,” he answered, taking his daughter onto his knee.  He refused to say anymore, like how he used to be in the system, and he was the reason the system was broken.

He refused to say anything about the lost life that ended all factions to his little girl, however.

Tris was still too young to understand.

“Shit, I’m gonna be late!” Ichigo yelled as she grabbed her backpack.  She woke up late this morning, and she automatically turned to blame Momigi for it.

And then she, Ichigo Sakura, realized that Momigi the poverty god wasn’t there.

Ichigo sighed as she locked her door.  It had been two years since Momigi gotten the happiness energy from her.  It had been two years since Momigi gave her a sad smile and walked away from Ichigo’s apartment.

Ichigo missed it.  The chaos was good for her.

And, as much as she hated to admit it, she missed Momigi’s shenanigans.

Violet Baudelaire waited patiently for her siblings.

It was too late for her to go back to school to finish her diploma, so she wanted to give Klaus and Sunny the chance to have what she never did.

There weren’t very many Baudelaires at Klaus and Sunny’s graduation.  A few cousins, aunts, and uncles Violet didn’t know about, but nonetheless, family.

Violet felt at ease for once in her life.  She wasn’t going to lose these members of her family for once.  And she was confident she would find the Quagmire triplets.

Violet Baudelaire had all the help she could get with that search.  And each passing day brought her and her siblings closer to the Quagmires.

“Kirito, look!”  Asuna pointed up at the stars.  ALO was good to them in ways Kirito wasn’t expecting.

“What?” the boy groaned, following where Asuna’s finger indicating.  His eyes widened when he saw what she was pointing at.  There was a conspicuous constellation that twinkled brightly in the southern sky.  The stars seemed to spell Congratulations on clearing new Aincrad, Kirito.

The girl’s wicked smirk had grown.  “Klein said to meet him and the rest of the gang at Aggil’s place to celebrate,” she added.

“In game?  Or in the real world?” he asked.

Asuna kissed his cheek and motioned to log out.  “In the real world.  Meet you there.”

“Sir, are you okay?” the bartender asked.

Ludwig Beilschmidt had been sipping his first mug of beer for nearly an hour at this point.  He was hinted to by his friend, Feliciano Vargas, that the rest of the countries would be planning something.

“Ja,” he said, avoiding her gaze.  It was his birthday, and the girl behind the counter told him this beer was on the house.

Not that he was complaining.  She was pretty in ways the others wouldn’t understand: shy, quiet, friendly.  Things he looked for in his ideal woman.

Her bright violet eyes clued to him that she wasn’t convinced.  “You sure?  You seem awful lonely.  What’s up?  Someone stood you up?”  She fetched herself a glass of water, and watched him with the deadliest of concern.

“If you can say zhat.  I vas told by one of my friends zhat his friends vere planning somezhing for my birzhday.”

“You were told by Vargas, correct?”

            “How on earzh did you-”

“Save me the questions, Beilschmidt.  I have connections.”  She looked at her glass of water.  “Kiku Honda was also saying something about hosting an event here.”

            “Honda?  You know Kiku Honda?”

“Yep.  Such an old soul for a guy that young.”  She sighed and downed her glass.  “Y’know, this would taste better with maple syrup, but I’m not holding my breath.”  She looked past him and at the door.  “Looks like Vargas and Honda are here, along with Alfred Jones, Arthur Kirkland, Ivan Braginsky, Wang Yao, and Francis Bonnefoy.”

Ludwig’s heart picked up pace.  She knew them.  She knew them all, and that remark about maple syrup really struck a nerve with him.

“You vouldn’t happen to be Margaret Williams, vould you?” he asked.

“The one and only.”  She smirked.  “Happy birthday, Ludwig.  It’s been a long time, hasn’t it?”

“Too long,” he responded, grabbing her arm.  He pulled her back and pressed a kiss to her cheek.  “Danke, Margaret.”

“C’mon, Link!  The celebration’s about to start!”

The blond-haired boy in green sighed as his older sister grabbed his arm.  It had been ten years since they left Kokiri Forest to find jobs to keep occupied.  She had found work as a tavern maid, and he was a mercenary for the royal family.

Not that Link was complaining.  He got to see both Princesses Zelda and Hylia on a daily basis, and they managed to grow in their friendship.  He had asked Princess Zelda to go with him this year to the festival.  She agreed to meet him.

Now, he was standing around with his sister, waiting for the princess.

He wasn’t going to deny that the celebrations were top notch.  He wasn’t going to deny his sister looked good in her turquoise sun dress and flower crown.  He wasn’t going to say he worried for the sake of the princess’s safety.

It was then Link felt something tap his shoulder.  He turned around and was greeted with a hug from Zelda.

Sebastian Michaelis wouldn’t dare admit it out loud, but he liked helping Ciel and Elizabeth plan their wedding.  If he dared to say anything about it to the young master, he would be slapped.  Sebastian couldn’t have that.

Shortly before Ciel wanted to start on wedding plans, the boy turned twenty.  And, to be honest, he looked more like his father every passing day.

For all that went, young Lord Phantomhive looked like his butler, too.

Of course, he would be in charge of the food.  Ciel knew well enough that Baldroy would mess the menu up for the celebration, and Ciel liked Sebastian’s cooking better than that buffoon’s cooking anyway.

This day, however, Sebastian went with the young lady Elizabeth to find the perfect dress.  She was a nicer change to Ciel: she made him smile more, and laugh much more often.

Sebastian knew he would enjoy serving the soon-to-be Lady Phantomhive.

“So, now what?” Jeff asked.  “That’s the end of that movie.”

“Fuck it, I’m going to kill people.  I’ve had enough of the lazy day,” BEN growled.  “They get repetitive, Jeff!  The hell made you want to watch those films?”

Sounds like a good idea, Clockwork, the Slenderman chimed in.  Meanwhile, I’m going hunting: animals, not people.  We still need some food in the house, and Eyeless Jack hasn’t exactly been the best at grocery shopping.

“That and everyone would stare at him,” Laughing Jack muttered as he popped another peppermint into his mouth.  “Why didn’t you send Jane?  Or Clocky?  Or both?  They’re pretty normal looking, aren’t they?”

And Ticci Toby stormed out the room.
