As I sat in the big oak tree just outside the gates. I had been here for 2 minutes and Caleb had already arrived here along with the first couple of elites. None of them had seen me but after 8 minutes when the last elite had finally arrived, I decided to show myself. As I jumped down, I saw that all of my elites take offensive stance. I landed softly on the ground despite of the amount of gear I was carrying. "I see that everyone is ready. Does any of you know why I asked Caleb to bring you here?" I asked calmly. "Wait Salem, why the hell are you carrying so much gear? Are we taking on an army or what?" Caleb exclaimed. "No but I'd rather carry too much gear than get into a situation that I'm not prepared for. Now I seem to recall asking all of you a question" I said sternly. "No sir" My elites replied in synchronization. "Caleb, do you have an idea?" I asked specifically directed at my most trusted lieutenant. "Yes sir. I believe that this might have something to do with your mate and our Luna and queen" He replied. His respond caused a bunch of whispers and chatters among the elites. "You are correct with that assumption, Caleb. To give you all the same amount of knowledge as Caleb here has, I recently found my mate. But she is someone that even I didn't expect. Now I had Caleb bring all of you because you are the most trusted of all my elites. So I expect you all to keep this to yourselves if you know what's good for yourselves. My mate and your Luna and queen is the hybrid" I said. Again this caused a bunch of exclaims and sneers.
"ENOUGH!!" I yelled. Immediately they quieted down. "I understand that some of you might hate that fact but I want to make myself very clear. Nothing is going to happen to her and if anyone, and I mean anyone hurts her then I'll make damn sure that none of you live to see tomorrow" I said sternly. They all nodded and silently looked at me. "Now the reason I brought you here is to bring back our Luna and my mate. We know her position. So let's go there now" I said sternly and started running in the direction of the town that I knew she was in.
Standing on the top of the hill so close to my mate was nerve wrecking. I knew that I wouldn't just be able to run in there and take her in my arms and shower her with my love. No that train left the day I had to hunt down the hybrid and her parents. The day that my men helped murder her parents. I know that I'll never be able to apologize enough for it. I know that I might never get to be with my mate the way that Caleb can be with my sister. The way my dad could with my mom.
I handed Caleb the binoculars. "She's in there. I know she is" I said sternly. "Salem. What do you intend to do? You know she hates us all. How can you be sure that she won't just kill all of us and then disappear?" Caleb asked, worry lacing every word. "She won't. Mind link the elites and tell them to stay behind me. She'll recognize me. She'll know me and she'll know what I am to her and she won't fire" I said confidently but in the back of my mind I was doubting my own words. I had after all been the one to order her parents death.
I saw all of my elites pull back to the tree line. I wasn't sure if they were hidden but I decided that I wouldn't let them walk behind me unless I was 100% sure that she wasn't going to shoot me. I had no idea what kind of weapons she had in there but I had a feeling that no matter what it was gonna be bad news if she decided that she didn't want me. I knew that the only chance I had at getting to her was to go in unarmed even if it meant giving her every opportunity to kill me. I just had to hope that she wasn't going to shoot me.
"I'm going out there and I need you all to stay here. Once I'm sure it's safe, I want all of you to crouch down as far as you can and walk on a single line behind me. If she shoots me then I want half of you to run around the house and try and get inside the house that way. And remember what I said. If she gets hurt, then the ones responsible won't live to see tomorrow" I said sternly and ended it by growling threatening at everyone.
I turned around and took a deep breath before going towards the house and even though she hadn't taken the shot yet, I knew that she could kill me at any given time. And honestly I wouldn't blame her for it. I, along with the other rulers, ordered the murder of her parents and her but she got away. I would only think of it as being right if she was the one to do it. She is the only one that has the right to avenge them and I wouldn't even fight her if she decided to do it. She's my mate and I would never do anything that could possibly hurt her. But even that I had already failed at. I had already failed her. I had hurt and hunted her without knowing that she was my mate. I had been trying to kill her ever since she was born. And I knew that right now she had me in her sights and I might be breathing my last breath at this very moment. I mentally prepared myself for the possibility of dying and decide to say a quick goodbye to the only two people, other than my mate, that meant anything to me. 'Caleb, I want you to take good care of my sister if anything happens to me. Promise me. And I have put it in my will that you and Ashley will take over if I die. So promise me that you'll take good care of our race. And lastly, don't forget to be there for your pups. They are going to need you and Ashley more than anything' I mind linked him calmly. For a couple of minutes there was nothing but silence. 'Don't talk like that Salem. You are going to be fine. She's your mate. She wouldn't kill you. But yes, I promise' He finally responded. 'Thank you' was my simple response before I cut the connection between him and I. I then open the connection that I was most worried about. 'Ashley?' I mind linked her in hopes that she would respond. 'Salem? What's going on? Where are you? Where is Caleb? What's going on?' She asked, worry lacing every word. 'Caleb, 23 of our elites and I have gone to try and bring back the... my mate. But that's not important right now. I need you to know that I love you more than anything. You have always been there for me when I needed it and especially after... mom and dad died. I have never actually thanked you for it but I doubt that I would have gotten this far without you' I mind linked even as I could feel my eyes begin to fill with tears. I had promise her that I would protect her after our parents were murdered and now I was maybe about to break that promise. 'Salem don't you dare talk to me like that. Don't you dare get yourself hurt. I need you. You promised me that you would always be here and that you would always protect me. Goddammit Salem, my pups need their uncle. So don't you dare die. You hear me? Don't you fucking dare die or I will personally march straight up to heaven and rip you back down here. I don't care if I'll have to kill all the gods and goddesses but you can't leave. I need you, Caleb needs you even though he might not want to admit it, my pups need you and our people need you. You can't die Salem. No don't you fucking do it' She mind linked and I could hear the worry, sadness and anger in her voice. 'I'm so sorry Ashley' was all I said before I cut the connection.
I knew she would take it badly but she had Caleb and her pups. She didn't need me, not anymore. And with that I kept walking closer to the house until everything suddenly went black.
