16. Chapter 15ish- Footsteps
Footsteps ring out across cobblestones. A voice rebukes them.
“Quiet! You want us to get found out?”
“No, sorry sir.”
Silence for a little longer. Then a boy’s voice.
“Don’t thank us yet, boy. We’re not out of the woods.”
The rumble of an opening gate. A soft gasp of relief.
Then one word that brings everything crashing down. “Now.”
There is a sudden blow, and a gasp from one of the members of the party. Then the sound of a body crashing to the ground. The man speaks again.
“You think you know everything there is to know about betrayal, boy? You’ve only just scratched the surface.” An order, directed to others. “Bind him.”
Small sounds. Then another order. “Put him in the cart.”
Another thud. And then, the sound of horse hooves. Soon, the sound of cart wheels joins it, carrying off into the night.
And in the midst of it, soft sobs that no one will hear. The sobs of a boy, imprisoned and trapped, never free, and the sobs of a girl who has lost everything she has ever loved, and cannot go back or forwards.
