Lupe was alone, cold and hurting all over. She groaned and pulled herself onto her feet, leaning heavily on the table she had been next to, her clothes in tatters, barely hanging onto her small shoulders. She could feel blood oozing from some cuts on her back, arms and legs. Even a few on her face, one above her eye making it hard to see.
"Remus!" She choked out and something moaned from the next room. Lupe hobbled over, moving from one piece of battered furniture to the next.
"Remus!" Lupe choked again and another moan came from behind the large ornate bed in the next room. Lupe staggered over and found her brother, lying in a tattered heap.
"It's over." She whispered, rolling him over.
"Five more minutes." He whispered back and they both cracked painful smiles.
"We can sleep in the hospital wing. We have to get back. Your friends might come looking for you if you're gone too long." She pulled weakly on his arm and Remus sat up.
"You're right. Madam Pomfry won't come any further than the tunnel." He mumbled and the two leaned on each other, helping the other down the stairs and out to the tunnel.
Making it to the Whomping Willow, Lupe and Remus found Madam Pomfrey waiting there, haven frozen the tree when she saw them coming.
"Come on you two. You know the drill Remus, everything's up in the hospital wing." Madam Pomfrey said and helped them out of the tunnel and away from the tree as the branches started swinging again. She handed them each a blanket off the cots in the hospital wing and helped them wrap them around themselves. The trio trekked up the six flights of stairs to the hospital wing, Madam Pomfrey letting them lean on her as they went, taking the long way to avoid other students.
"Take those cots there. I'll be back in a second with the ointment." Madam Pomfrey pointed to the two cots nearest her office with the top blanket missing off each. Remus helped Lupe onto one and sat down on the other, leaning against the wall and closing his eyes, looking more tired and weak than she had seen him in a long time.
Madam Pomfrey came back out of her office, a large bag in one hand and her wand in the other.
"Alright, Lupe I'll do you first so your brother can rest." She said and opened the bag, taking out a small rag and a bottle of a thick green liquid. She opened the bottle and Lupe wrinkled her nose at the smell, and regretted it as everything started hurting again. Madam Pomfrey dampened the rag with the green goop and started smearing it over her cuts, numbing the pain and making Lupe wish for a hot shower.
"There you are!" James, Sirius and Peter came into the Hospital wing and hurried over to them as Madam Pomfrey started putting bandages over the now slime covered cuts.
"Dude, what happened to you two? You look like you fought the Whomping Willow!" Sirius said and Lupe and Remus shared a knowing look.
"Yes. We fought the Whomping Willow all night." Lupe said, trying to sound convincing.
"No, we only fought the tree till midnight, then we ran through the forest trying to find the tribe of acromantulas Hagrid mentioned." Remus added.
"So you two go fight a magic tree and a tribe of giant spiders every month?" Peter clarified.
"Yup. That's where we go every month. Got to fight a few man eating spiders and a blood thirsty tree every now and a gain if you want to feel alive!" Lupe said trying to sound convincing when all her body wanted to do was sleep now that Madam Pomfrey had moved on to Remus.
"Dude, so not cool." James said taking a seat next to Remus and Sirius and Peter plopped down beside Lupe.
"Yeah, you could have at least told us you two were going to do something stupid and dangerous." Sirius said.
"Well," Remus took over for Lupe and she laid her head on Sirius's shoulder, trying desperately not to fall asleep, "Now you know. " Remus said sheepishly and Madam Pomfrey put the bottle of green slime back into her bag with the roll of bandages and the rag.
"Will you three help them back to the common room? I'm not sure they'll make it up the stairs." She said and James and Sirius nodded.
"Alright, get on, just don't get any of that smelly green stuff on my robes." Sirius said and knelt down with his back to Lupe. She Wrapped her small battered arms around his neck and picked her up, carrying her piggy back while James and Peter stood on either side of Remus with their arms clasped behind him and his arms draped over their shoulders. The five of them left the hospital wing and Lupe must have fallen asleep because she didn't remember even reaching the flight of stairs to the seventh floor, much less changing into her pajamas and getting into her bed.
